overall we had a great experience with private day tours.
PEOPLE - guanluca (the owner) was very responsive when we were trying to coordinate the tour over email. i appreciated this because it was a last minute booking. guanluca (the driver) was awesome. he was on time, he was accommodating, he was knowledgeable, and he was fun to talk to during our ride. we would highly recommend him!
TOUR - from positano, we booked a private day tour with a stop at pompeii and then a winery at the base of mount vesuvius. we enjoyed pompeii because it was really interesting but it got very hot and crowded. we recommend going early! we didn't book a tour guide through the ruins of pompeii but if this is something you're interested in, we recommend hiring a guide. if you don't have one, you will miss a lot of the significant things. we just followed some groups and got a good idea of the what things were. :) the winery was nice. but if you're used to educational winery tours, make sure you specify this and let private day tours know. i assumed it would be like some of my napa or tuscany wine tours, and the experience we had was much more simple. we arrived at the winery, they gave us a 5 min tour of the vineyard, we sat down to eat and they poured us tastings of their wines that paired with the food. i guess i was just expecting them to talk more about the characteristics of the wine, how they produce it, how to taste it, etc. but this was not the tour companies fault. i shouldn't have assumed that this was going to be the same kind of tour. the wine and food were good overall. at the end of the day, guanluca took us to get lemon ice from this guy near a lookout where we overlooked sorrento. it was beautiful. had a great day and i definitely think it's worth doing a guided tour of the amalfi coast.
