“Million dollar view for peanuts!!!”
Reviewed 17 September 2009

The view from the sea facing rooms with the balconys are amazing. The terraces are large and spacious and the rooms are clean and humble. I would rather stay in a more basic hotel with that view than a more plush hotel without the view anyday. The hotel is basic and clean and the host Carlos is a darling. My boyfriend and I thought he was very lovely and speaks lots of different languages which is impressive.
I think this hotel is a real gem, Positano is so expensive so the cheap rates in this place were very welcomed. This hotel could be turned into an amazing boutique hotel and charge the earth for that view- a project I would like to embark on myself.
But for the money this hotel over exceeds your expectations.
Just make sure you book a room with a view (room 4 is the best)!
Enjoy!

We stayed at Pensione Maria Lusia for one night in a 3 week trip in Italy. When we got off the bus, we must have walked for at least 15min with luggage to get to this place. It was quite a hike. However when we got there, and were shown our room, we were blown away from our first views of the water and the beautiful town of Positano. The room was clean but basic, and the general areas smelt a little like cats (there were a few of them around the hotel). This hotel, is a bit far from the main beach, but it is closer to the smaller less crowed beach. Carlo (the owner) was very hospitable, and treated us kindly. They have a computer that guests can use to look at photos, unfortunately the internet was not working on the computer at the time we were there. But there is an internet cafe that isn't too expensive near the main beach. Overall our stay here was nice, and it was a wonderful welcome to the amazing town of Positano.

Ok...so for a budget traveller like myself this place was absolutely beautiful, great value for money and the staff were fantastic. We feel like we really lucked out with this place!

This little family fun hotel is the best value place to stay in positano. And for a 10 Euro extra you can get a room with a private terrace, and it is worth it.

The rooms are basic but very clean, and freshly made up every day. Carlo, the owner, is very nice and if you don't mind cats, they will pay a visit to your terrace every day.

There is a fridge in the common area and every room has their own shelf, which was good for keeping the wine cold for afternoon drinks!

Walking around positano is great, and from Pensione Maria, is it a short walk down the stairs to the beach. And about a 10 - 15 minute walk down into the town center. But you would want to take your time becuse it is a very beautiful walk. But if your not up for the walk the Positano internal bus will take you back up the top of the hill.

When I go back to Positano I wil be staying here hands down. It is so cheap for a place with magnificant views. Enjoy!!!

We had a very small room at the bottom of the stairs and we got a great rate. The place has definitely seen more lively days. The very pleasant owner shared with me that he used to host guests, back in the day, for months at a time, and that he used to enjoy making dinner for the whole place on a nightly basis.

There is nothing wrong with Maria Luisa at all, but I would not call it charming or exceptional. You should feel very comfortable booking a stay here.

We stayed at Maria Luisa for 8 nights during the first leg of our monthlong Italian honeymoon and we really loved it! I was a bit worried that we might find the rooms a bit rundown after reading reviews here, but our room was in great condition and really well furnished with lots of room for clothes and other things and nice green tiles all over the bath area. It was a large room, with a large double bed (which was a bit hard and tough on your back though) and another smaller bed squeezed in, but we folded away the legs of the smaller bed and put it up against the wall and so got much more space. Though this is a place where I think there is big differences between the rooms though little difference in price and I can really recommend our room (room 3) which I also think had the best and largest and most secluded balcony of them all. The view is really amazing and even pictures here on tripadvisor don't do it justice. There was a lot of complaining by other reviewers about cats, but there was only one cat that came visiting whenever you ate something on the balcony but she was quite unobtrusive. Obviously, if you feed the cat she will become more of a nuisance.

Everyone has been writing about how friendly the host Carlos is, and he is really helpful though we got off to a bad start when we arrived in early evening and he didn't have the room we had booked but informed us that we would sleep in one of the rooms in the basement with no balcony the first night and would then move to our room 3. I wasn't very happy since it was the first night of our honeymoon and I didn't really belive this was just a "mistake", but he immediately offered us a discount and we got it down even further so we felt a bit compensated at leas (and that room also had a nice view over the city (room 14) and the communal terrace is a lovely place for breakfast so this thing didn't colour our stay really). But there is a bit of an unpleasant smell in the basement and the rooms are miles apart from the four rooms with the sea-facing balconies (rooms 3, 4, 5 and 6).

We tried several restaurants in the Fornillo area but our absolute favourite was Saraceno d*Oro, where the "Fantasia" pizza with a touch of mozzarellla, parma ham, ruccula and shaved parmesan is a real mindblower, as is the tiramisu which was amazing.

The Fornillo area is much less touristy then the main part of Positano. You actually see lots of real local families moving about, there is a nice grocery store run by an old man and his wife where you can buy your breakfast to eat on the balcony and hardly any touristy souvenir shops. Everything is much cheaper, especially on Fornillo beach, which is just as nice and less crowded than the main beach. An example: to hire 2 beach lounges for a day with an umbrella on main beach is an exorbitant 25 Euro, the same on Fornillo beach is 14 Euro. The bars and restaurants along the main beech are real tourist traps with hiked prices for poor quality, while the little beach cafe at Fornillo beach is much nices and serves surprisingly good food for a beach place.

About the beaches, they are comprised of round rocks which can be uncofortable to lie on if you have only a towel (hence the popularity of beach longers). If you bring a beach mattress you will add a lot to your comfort level.

Lastly, breakfast in Italy is usually a small, sugary affair which is frustrating if you are used to a good breakfast like we are in scandinavia. The good thing about Maria Luisa was that they provided fridge space so you could have your own breakfast. This suited us very. We brought some picnic cutlery and crockery which was good since their stuff was very basic. They have a coffee machine that gives you espresso for 1 Euro, and this was probably the best coffee by a machine we have ever had. If you want a little more water in your espresso, choose the "Cafe Lugo"alternative.

Have a nice stay!!

On a six week trip, we were looking for affordable yet comfortable accomodation. This ticked all the boxes.

Although this hotel is situated above the smaller beach at Fornillo, we found the area to be perfect, less crowded and the restaurants nearby have much more character than the jam packed eateries at the main beach. It's a nice walk down to the main beach and town of Positano, and if you can't be bothered walking back up the windy road to the hotel you can catch the internal bus for 1.10 Euro each. Easy.

The room is spacious and clean we had our own private balcony with a million dollar view. There is also a communal fridge where you can store nibbles and drinks which is very handy as it was so hot! There is also a supermarket down the hill about five minutes away.

Out of the six weeks, this was our favourite destination and the hotel contributed to this. For the price per night you can't complain at all, we found it to be perfect and will fondly remember this place.

Price paid per night: 65 euros (cash)
Would I stay again for the price? Yes
Would I recommend it for the price? Yes
The good:
- views, whether from your room or the shared terrace or the eating area
- carlo is a superb host, very helpful and friendly at all times
- location, not too far from anything in town (you have to walk steps regardless)
- 1 fridge per 3 rooms for guests to use as well as crockery and cutlery in the communal dining room
- Lilu (sp?) the cat!
The bad:
- no air con in the rooms, although admittedly we didnt need it in a back room

Positano is an amazing little town built into a cliff and staying at Pensione Maria Luisa with its views just added to the thrill of being there. We were very comfortable in our room and although we didnt have a room with a view, our room was cooler for being out the sun and we just used the shared terrace for dinner and relaxing to play cards.

Carlo recommended his sister's restaurant (Saraceno D'oro) for dinner and it did not disappoint. We got take out and ate on the terrace with a bottle of wine on our first night and enjoyed it so much we repeated the play on our 2nd night.

If you are into adventure/exercise try the Sentiero Degli Dei hike up the mountain...takes a good 4-5 hours but it's so worth it. Ask at the tourist office for a map.
