“Strange atmosphere”
Reviewed 20 November 2013 via mobile

I stayed in this hotel 2 nights and switched to another place. The hotel operators can be curt and unfriendly. One of the staff members was kind and helpful but is not a member of the family that runs it. Rooms are small, dark and IMO depressing. I needed a blanket one night and discovered the one in the closet had black mold stains on it. It is quite a trek down to the beach and lower Positano, so be aware of that when choosing a hotel there, location is important, especially when climbing back up after a day or night near the Sea. I echo other comments about lack of friendliness here by other guests and consider service and attitude of staff critical to my experience at a hotel. There are many fine choices in Positano so there are options.

While the location and views were nice the cost and poor service outweighed the view. During our stay several family members were ill and getting things like ice or hot water were virtually impossible. The rooms were dank with little ventilation and we were constantly quizzed by the staff on the location of the patio keys. The staff had a comment or a rule for everything which really made the experience feel like staying with very grouchy in-laws. Do a little research and find more accommodating accommodations or stay in Sorrento (the prices are better and it's within a short drive of Positano).

Yes, the view is good. But seriously, there are as good or better views to be had in a lot of places on the Mediterranean. The hotel is bad with entire decor straight out of 1970s: everything is old, creaky and occasionally smells of mold; pillows are old and thin; soundproofing is non-existent (could hear the next three room in each direction blowing their noses and coughing, or worse); towels resembled table cloths (they were basically thin cotton napkins); no toiletries were provided other than basic liquid soap. Breakfast was OK - nothing special. No parking and it took us an hour to find street parking (this isn't the hotel's fault, but just FYI). And all of this for $360 per night (we got quadruple room to share, which came with one large and two small beds). Glad we only spent one night.

Hotel Gabbiano is evenly poised halfway on the Positano hillside, so its a 10-15 minute walk down to the beach and the same to the top to catch buses to othe Amalfi towns (shorter if you take the steps). So not the best of locations, but not bad if you like walking and strolling through the town. Can be very hot to do in summer!

The views from the rooms are great, since its perched high up. The rooms have good-sized balconies overlooking the sea, which is great. The rooms are basic and adequate - the fridge didnt cool too well - no question of ice, which was a downside in the summer months.

The main downside was the service and staff. The breakfast was very basic and the same every day - some bread, sweet buns, yoghurt, sad selection of fruit, some ham... very uninspiring. The hotel refused to give you ice from their bar / kitchen even when we were willing to pay for it - and its quite a walk in the heat to the nearest shop where you can get some, so that was ridiculously petty of them. The hotel only served 2 types of sandwiches on their entire menu, so eating in is not an option.

On the plus side, the bus stop to take you to the beach is just outside the hotel, and cars can drive right up to the entrance. The hotel has an elevator. Its reasonable and a good option as a base in Positano if you dont want too much out of the hotel except a place to sleep/ enjoy the view. It is clean, comfortable, with all essentials in place.

I booked three nights for a visit to Positano, Italy mid August 2013. We were taking the SITA bus from Sorrento to Positano. I was aware that SITA had two bus stops in Positano - Chiesa Nuova and Sponda. I couldn't find these stops on any map to see which was nearest this hotel so I e-mailed the hotel for help. However, they didn't reply, was surprised before we got to the hotel but not at all surprised now. All they would have had to tell me was Chiesa Nuova was the stop to get off and either walk down the hill, passing the Royal Hotel, Villa Franca Hotel on my way or take the local bus service after purchasing tickets in the Tobacconists right beside the SITA bus stop.
When we arrived our room was not ready, no problem really there, we were quite happy to wait. After a little while, a staff member offered to show us an apartment which was ready that we could move into straight away. We went to see the apartment, they would give it for the same rate as our room. They pointed out the big freezer that was in the kitchen! However if we were to use the same kitchen, an additional charge would be applied. We declined the apartment and waited for our room to be ready. Staff member was not at all happy!!
When we got to our room, we were really happy with our decision. Room was spacious, good bathroom, clean, nice balcony with table and two chairs, and had a much better view of bay etc. Rooms are about the only good thing this hotel has going for it. No doubt, they reckoned if we had taken the apartment, letting the room would have much better chance. When I enquired about a safe, the hotel doesn't have safes in the rooms, but did offer to keep our passports at reception which we accepted. It was a bit awkward that whenever we left the hotel we had to bring jewellery, cards, cash, mobile phones etc. with us whereas if a safe was available we would happily have left items in the safe visiting the beach, on a trip we took to Amalfi etc.From what I can see, this hotel is just interested in what they can charge for basic accommodation without any services such as room safes, sun loungers and pools. Prices for this three star are comparable to what we paid for our four star hotel in Sorrento which had far superior services - sun loungers and pools with towels provided, good dining experiences, extremely friendly staff etc.
Breakfast has been mentioned in some of the reviews, I would rate it as quite poor. Even on our last morning when we arrived for breakfast at 8, fresh fruit consisted of 8 or 10 plums and a few pears. My experiences of continental breakfasts has been that there was an ample supply of nice fresh fruits. If you are not in the dining area early, cereals, yoghurts, fruit, bread etc. is only replenished as it runs out very reluctantly. For a hotel, coffee, warm milk and hot water for tea are served on a help yourself basis from flasks. No such thing as a nice pot of coffee and milk brought to your table.
This hotel offers wifi, but this is only available in the reception and dining area. These areas have air conditioning units installed but were never turned on while we were there so we didn't spend too much time there, this probably suited the hotel staff!!

Nice view is the only thing this hotel have to offer.
This is a family runned hotel, they where not nice at all, and a few members of the group actually got yelled at by one of the eployees, not a nice man.
They have full lockdown at nigth so you dont get out.
Barrely not allowed to talk at nigth time.

Breakfast = croissant/bread and coffee/juice.
