I would certainly recommend having a look at this. The blue light reflected onto the water within the cave is amazing. However, the 1 hour wait whilst our boat captain jostled with the other boats was not great. There was no queuing system and it was all a bit haphazard. If you have the time it is a good morning or afternoon out, but be warned about the queues. We went by boat. The alternative is to take a bus or cab inland and queue on the stairs.

We stopped here on our day long car tour of Amalfi Coast. We didn't have to pay admission fee and the car service (Sorrento Silver Star Tours - which I highly recommend) arranged for us to have a boat to ourselves, there were only 3 of us. I thought the cave was beautiful, it was hard to get a good picture w our camera. Our boatman kept repeating lookie, lookie lookie .. it's a miracle, which we all found very funny. It has got to be boring steering a boat in a small cave all day, so I think whatever he has to do to make it through the day is fine with me. He NEVER said to remember the captain and we tipped him. I agree its a bit of a tourist trap, but we're tourists and I'm glad I saw it. The elevator ride down through the rocks was pretty cool too. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see this, but if you have time on your agenda, take it for what it is ... a beautiful natural sight and just enjoy.

Don't bother with this. It took time away from our visit to Capri and the Amalfi coast. The boatman was aggravating in repeatedly telling us to remember the captain. This was a lame excursion. Just continue on with touring the Amalfi coast.

We went on a moterboat from Lido Capo di Conga. Inside the cave we were sailed around in boats. The boatsman asked not to forget him, meaning he would like tips. As he rowed us around in the large cave, he kept yelling 'Lucky Luke It's amiracle'.
You must come here when the sun is high to get the nice blue underwater light.
It is one of several caves worldwide, that is flooded with a brilliant blue or emerald light. The quality and nature of the color in each cave is determined by the unique lighting conditions in that particular cave. The grotto, which is located at the Amalfi Coast, is partly filled with sea water. The surface area of the water measures roughly 45 x 32 metres, with a cavern roof about 24 metres above water level. Formation of cave was caused by bradyseism - tectonic upheaval of cliffs, where cliffs fractured and cave was formed along the fissures. Now the cave has descended and sea water had entered it, partly flooding the stalagmites in it.[1]

Unlike the Blue Grotto located a few kilometres to the west on Capri, the Grotta dello Smeraldo has no natural outlet above the waterline. The only opening to the outside world is just below the water level. Refracted sunlight entering the cavern through the opening gives the water its characteristic emerald glow during daylight hours.

Dont forget the boatman ,the title here relates to anyone who was on the silly little boat for the 10 minute routine . The boatman is the only thing that makes this stop worthwhile , funnier than sin , the ride itself well .... Your there smile and enjoy the comedy show it doesnt last long .
