“Best place to stay on the Amalfi Coast”
Reviewed 25 July 2012

Casa Privata is the best villa to stay at on the Amalfi Coast. From my perspective, it has three things going for it. While there are many beautiful villas in the area, this villa has three differentiating features that make it unique. First, and most important, is its access to the ocean. I was surprised at the condition of most beaches on the Amalfi Coast-rocky and very crowded. You need to pay 10 euro for a chair/umbrella and will be sitting next to many other people. The beaches are overcrowded and the swimming area rocky and very limited. At Casa Privata, the slope of the property down to the water is gradual. While there are many stairs to get to the water, the cliffs by the water flatten out. The villa did a masterful job of creating a beautiful sunbathing area where there are platforms that allow for many chairs and umbrellas. There is a also a ladder into the water and your own private lagoon. The result is a spectacular setting for swimming in the crystal clear, warm water of the area. The second unique feature of the villa is the town it is located in-Praiano. Unlike Positano and Amalfi, it is not touristy at all and not that crowded. There are several great restaurants in the town and you can take a water taxi to many of them. By staying in Praiano, you can avoid the crowds, yet be very close to many surrounding areas to visit. Finally, the villa has amazing gardens and is well conceived architecturally. The owners speak fluent English and are very helpful in making arrangements for you. The breakfast every morning is excellent.

We were two families (10 people in total) and the six bedrooms easily accommodated us.

My husband and I stayed here in September 2011 for the first few days of our honeymoon, to say the least we were bitterly disappointed, and unfortunately we were not the only ones. When we arrived we were indeed greated by a couple of workers to carry our bags down the steep steps to the villa, however after that it was all downhill.
The room, was just as the pictures showed, however the smell of drains in a bathroom with no ventilation was a let down. The grounds were untidy and overgrown, the pool was dirty and had leaves floating in it. I appreciate that there had been a storm just prior to our arrival, but no attempts were made to clean up during our stay. One of the reasons we chose Ca Pa was for the access to the sea, however during the storm, the ladder was damaged. Despite clear weather and calm seas, the ladder was only mended just as we were leaving, thus we were unable to jump into the sea, which we were so looking forward to.
The staff were not helpful and to the point of rudeness. The females were seen sitting down all day and letting their workers do all the work, despite there being plenty to do. Ca Pa is beautiful, but for the prices they are charging, it still requires a lot more work and better staff.

If you are seeking for serenity, fabulous sea view, and intimate hideaway with direct sea access in a cosy little town of the Amalfi coast, this is the place to be.

What used to be an old fisherman’s ruin has been beautifully restored into an artfully decorated private hideaway of 6 rooms and the lush, abundant garden literally fills all your senses. Down in the cliffs you will find a private sundeck area where you can jump into the clear blue sea if you don’t find the waters during Easter (April) too cold for your liking.

Everything simply speaks of understated elegance, from the bedroom’s decoration to the terrace that has sweeping view of the sea to the breakfast in the garden. We had a lovely 3-course dinner made and served by Rosa who also runs the place and a superwoman for that matter. She helps you carry the luggage, makes wonderful café latte, assists in booking tours (she booked our wine tour at Mastroberardino) and cooks with fresh, locally grown ingredients.

Most of all, trust - which is seemingly more and more wanting in this age of global mass tourism – is clearly there in the hotel. There are no hidden expenses, the “honesty bar” concept is admirable, and we were even advised to pay via bank transfer (after returning home from our holiday) instead of paying by credit card due to the substantial surcharge.

We can’t wait for our next stay in Ca’ P’a!

P.S. This review is long overdue since we stayed here during the Easter holiday in 2011. We owe it to ourselves and the trip advisor readers to share this story since our stay here was really unforgettable. We keep thinking of and are longing to return to the place.

One of the most beautiful places we've ever been. Perfect location, wonderful house, amazing garden. The staff, absolutly lovely. It´s like living in your own "casa privata". It is worth the price, dont hesitate.

Fantastic private location, great building with great interior design. Well landscaped garden. The pool area is incredible. Bathing off the private cliffs is something special.
Great breakfast and food service at the Casa, also very nice restaurants in the small village.
Lovely!

In case you are looking for a nice and fancy all-in 5-star hotel at the amalfi coast, please stay away from the casa privata. if you like to stay with friends in fantastic house where nothing seems to be new and everything like it always has been and should have been, where architecture and interior offers you endless harmonic views with always new nice details to discover, where you have a breathtaking view on the sea and the amalfi coast from a wonderful garden in park dimensions where conscious design meets the wild nature - then you must stay in casa privata. and if you are lucky the ladies of the house will cook you a wonderful italian dinner. have hardly ever seen such a wonderful and peaceful place. a small warning at the end: if taking the stairs to the 2nd floor of your house is a challenge, better stay home ;-)

We just returned for a week on the Amalfi Coast, half of which was spent at Casa Privata. I would recommend Casa Privata to anyone looking for a romantic or relaxing hotel away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was one of the most romantic hotels I have ever stayed in, and was really more like having a villa to yourself for a week. The owners were on call to help with anything you may need. Best points were view from the room over the sea, great collection of wines, large honour bar with variety of spirits, dvd collection, secluded location, breakfast at any time of the day! The villa is located down steep steps, but I think this adds to its feeling of privacy and luxury. We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: The dinner cooked up by the hosts was awesome!
