“A Little Jewel in the Old Town”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We have stayed in Hotel San Marco for a few days while on business in Prato in May 2014. The location of the hotel could not be better - 10 min to the train station and the old town starts right there at the hotel. We have experienced a basic room with a small funny bathroom and but were later relocated to a bigger room with a modern big bathroom. Both rooms were spotless. Yes, beds a bit hard, however they were made for us even after siesta. A lovely selection of freshly baked pastries, yoghurt, cereal, prsuto, cheese and fruit was on offer for breakfast. The best of all were staff - they were friendly and extremely helpful. They were welcoming and always had a kind word for you. They gave advice on trains, printed train timetables for us, we were also able to but a train ticket to Florence at the reception. We were able to leave our car right outside at the front door and they offered to move the car for us if necessary. At the departure we were given a small gift from the hotel. A very special place, indeed and I would warmly recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the third floor with a big bathroom and facing the courtyard (very quiet).

This hotel is located on the edge of the old city, and a ten minute walk from the main train station. It overlooks a main road junction, but noise was minimal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Facilities are basic, but did include free wi-fi. Breakfast was served in the basement - a good selection of fruit, meats, breads and drinks.

I stayed here for two nights and can not compliment the staff enough. They go out of their way to be pleasant and helpful even to the point of going out to buy a bus ticket for me. I would recommend it without hesitation. OK the beds are a bit on the hard side but the rooms are immaculate. The breakfast is also good with fresh fruit, eggs, meats and the usual pastries.
Also just near the hotel is a bus stop for a local bus which takes you to Florence airport in just 25 minutes at a cost of Euro 1.70. How convenient is that!

I have stayed here twice for business and deliberately sought it out for the second trip. It has the feel of a family run hotel and the staff are friendly and helpful. My luggage was lost on route from Paris and the staff were so helpful - they even asked a friend to open up his shop on a Sunday evening so that I had a shirt for a function! Rooms are simple, but clean and airy. Tile floors and well equipped bathroom. No corporate glitz, just honest traditional small hotel that ticks the boxes. Breakfast is continental buffet with a good range including fresh fruit, pastries, hams and cheese. There is a bit of noise at night, but that's true of all of Prato - it didn't bother me. Rates are excellent value. Prato itself is a charming little town off the tourist track. Good places to eat and drink, great for strolling and a few interesting sights. It feels much more like 'real' Tuscany than the bigger tourist towns.

Great location but noisy on the square until
Midnight. Hard beds average room but really spotless. Best if all were the staff they were really fantastic and couldn't do enough for you so all in all we had a great time. Do try all the little bars in the town they are sizing and just a really short walk from the San Marco hotel

Hotel San Marco is within an easy walk of the cathedral and surrounding areas, and is also close to the train station. The facilities and standard of the hotel are definitely up to the three-star rating, if not beyond. So the hotel is convenient if you're staying in Prato, and would probably also make a good base if you're exploring the area.

On arrival we were greeted by the friendly and very helpful front desk staff. We had a car, and were quickly offered a place right in front of the hotel (the hotel staff seem to park their cars there to "block" those spots, they move their car so you can park yours there). We were also given a parking voucher avoiding the need to pay for street parking.

The room was quite large, simply furnished, but with everything you'd need. The air conditioning was working well - something we appreciated as it was a very hot day. Sleep quality is fine. The bathroom, although perfectly fine, was a little old and probably in need of renovation soon. Everything was clean. Our room overlooked the Piazza San Marco with its Henry Moore sculpture (Large Square Form with Cut).

Breakfast is taken in the downstairs restaurant, and was a surprisingly complete buffet with a good selection of items available.

The helpful front desk staff gave us a a very good recommendation for dinner in the old town.

A good value hotel in you're in or near Prato.
