“A Mixed Bag”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2013

We have just returned from a 4 night stay. Whilst the hotel enjoys a central location the down side is that is very noisey (both day and night) people, dogs, deliveries, music, church bells (on the hour). This makes it difficult to get a good nights rest which was disappointing for me. The design is quirky and the room was very clean. With the exception of Nico (who was most helpful) I found staff were neither welcoming or forthcoming with basic information such as times for breakfast etc. It would perhaps be a good idea to list basic information like this within the bedrooms so guests are better informed.
Elaine, Glasgow, Scotland

Room Tip: All rooms face the street so unfortunately a quieter room is not an option

We stayed at Villa Madau for 4 nights at the end of April. The weather was poor, so the roof terrace was closed, but they let us access it and it must be great on warmer evenings. The breakfast was a surprise, as in Italy it tends to be quite basic (continental: cereals, croissants and jam, tea or coffee), but Villa Madau had tasty ham, boiled eggs and cheese as well, and chocolate covered cake. The staff was extremely helpful, turning up the heating only in the rooms were it was required (we had 4 rooms, some people felt warm, other wanted a higher temperature: eventually everyone was satisfied), giving advice and information, and being friendly and professional at all time. The place was very clean and well kept, and there was a lift, which helped with the luggage. Also, the bar seating area outside is very pleasant, facing the small square. No problem with noise from the outside, but that is probably because it was low season, I am sure earplugs would be a good idea in summer!

Villa Madau is located in the village of Pula, about half an hour’s drive up the coast from Cagliari. The TomTom thought the hotel was blocks away from where it actually was, leading to an hour of circling one-way streets to find it so it’s best to print a map. Street parking along the river, a block away from the hotel, was the best free alternative. The hotel lies along a square across from a church – the bells ring throughout the day but are quiet all night. A take-out restaurant next door leads to some street noise; it’s best to ask for a quiet room away from the road if possible. Check-in was friendly and helpful the main floor has an indoor-outdoor restaurant of good quality, a small bar, and a public computer – there is free wifi available in the public areas.

The overall décor is eclectic and comfortable: tiles and fabrics, nooks to read and colorful courtyards. It’s filled with plants and is warm and welcoming. Rooms are similarly unique – a jumble of styles with furniture, pictures, and fabrics that blend into a comfortable whole. The room had a couch/bed, a main bed, a table and chairs, a desk, and more scattered along the length of a tiled room. The bathroom is large and clean, with a stall shower; temperature and pressure are adequate. The bed is comfortable (but a double made from two singles) and there is a small refrigerator and local cable television.

Breakfast includes pastries and fruit, cereal and breads, juices, cheese and meats as a small buffet. In good weather, the outdoor seating area is delightful, with lots of everyday activity in the square. Pula is filled with small shops and grocers and is comfortably small and walkable. There are many good restaurants within easy walking distance, and the beach is about ten minute’s drive away. This is a delightful hotel with authentic regional flavor and setting, convenient to Cagliari but with much more of a country feel.

Room Tip: Away from the street noise

This was a pleasent stay, however not worth the 150 euros we paid. Pitched as a design hotel we were looking for something special to end our Sardinian holiday. The decor needs some TLC but the resturant is very good. Dont stay if you are looking for a quiet nights sleep as it is bang in the middle of the square but for us it worked out well as there was a dance festival on, so we could watch from the comfort of our balconey! Fantastic shower but double was 2 single matresses pushed together. Pleasent staff - Pula is a touristy area we had come from the luxery of the real countryside at Arbus - the beaches werent up to much, the sea is dirty (Chia) and the others are only accessable if you are in a overcrowded resort. Overall I think if I wanted to be with other English people I would go again!

Stayed at Villa Madau over a summer weekend. Location is right at the center of Pula and that can be a mixed bag. Pula is a rare example of a real small town in a Sardinian beach destination, so you will get restaurants, bars, shopping and a place to stroll as you would expect from Continental Italy, but with with the typical gorgeous beaches and crystal clear waters of Sardinia.

On the minus side parking is difficult and far away and music from the street and from the roof terrace will stop you from sleeping till 1 am, when noise stops. If that suits you Villa Madau is a very nice choice, so it was for us.

Rooms are pleasant, clean and individually designed, nice breakfast is al fresco in the courtyard.

The hotel Villa Madau is located of the main square in Pula. The hotel staff is extremely helpful and the rooms are nicely decorated.
Due to its central location it can be noisy at times, but nothing you wouldn't expect from the city center of an Italian village ;-)

This hotel is a triumph of style over substance. The location is good - in the town centre with a fabulous outdoor pizza restaurant through an archway opposite. The rooms probably looked trendy 10 years ago but now look dated. Staff on reception were unhelpful. Plain glass windows in the bathroom overlooking the public corridor!!! Noisy neighbours practicising their drumming. 40% of lights not working in the bedroom which indicates in my view a less than careful attitude on the part of the proprieters.
