“Kind of great”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Assuming you know what to expect I think this is a pretty great vacation hotel -- lovely room, good beach, great food. Excellently run and managed. The only warning is that the hotel is modern and some people clearly expected a more rustic/palatial experience. Punta Ala is a purpose built vacation community. Understand that and you will find Gallia Palace a really well run, traditional family focused hotel with charming staff and years of experience in making guests comfortable.
I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Very old hotel! The rooms are shabby and old fashioned!
The beach is very far from hotel. Every time you need to wait for shuttle bus that takes you to the beach.
The food is a la buffet on the beach. Too expensive :50 euro per adult. Drinks are not included. Beach is crowded with people!
I would never recommend to come here again!

Dear Guest,
Thanks for your time and your review.
We do not know which room you had but you should know that every years we renew some room and every times in a different style. That gives the possibilities to each guest to choose a modern or classic style according with his/her own feeling. We are sorry if you probably had still a not renew one.
If you get a path, the beach is 500m from the hotel that means 5 min walk that most of the time is considered a pleasure walk, but with the shuttle bus is still 5 min because the way is longer.
If you come in half board basis, the food at the beach is € 30 pp . If you are not, you can choose between full lunch with grill at € 50, or Pagoda lunch without grill that cost € 30pp. or eat a single dishes at the lounge à la carté. It is well explained also at the entrance of the restaurant.
Drink of course has to be paid as almost in every hotel of our category. The beach were full because we were in high season and the hotel was full. I recommend you next time if you can/want, to come in low season (May-September) where you have less people.
Best regards.

This is a superb hotel.

The location is just lovely. The service was universally friendly and efficient. The food was of the highest order.

We had just spent three full days in Rome. The drive will take at least two and a half hours on a clear run. Longer if there is traffic as we found out to our cost returning to Rome, just narrowly catching our flight. Pisa is the best option!

Having stayed in the Waldorf, where the rooms were luxurious, but the extras were at times unpleasantly expensive, I was looking forward to the Gallia, for which we had paid more per night.

Do not be put off by the building itself. Although a Relais member, the hotel building will not win any architectural awards . The decor is slightly dated.....especially the rugs ...my wife's view. This is the only very slight negative you say about every aspect of the hotel.

We had the basic room , which was perfectly pleasant and very well appointed. You can pay extra to stay at the front of the hotel.

All the staff, without exception, were friendly, welcoming and enthusiastic in their willingness to help. They were mostly multi-lingual ; how many of us can joke in two or three languages?

The gardens were manicured perfectly, providing a sense of calm. It is set in a lovely location surrounded by Tuscan hills . ( You can cycle in the forests. Bikes are available). The pool is just lovely. The gardens were a perfect backdrop for breakfast and evening meals.

Families of all generations come here year after year. Friends bring their friends, which is a huge compliment to the hotel, which itself is run by a family. The third generation are now in charge. The father and the son are ever present to check all is in order and to chat with the guests.

The private beach , reached by a short walk or a trolley bus , is an integral part of the hotel. You are allocated your own umbrella for your stay plus a changing cabin. We were right at the front. It would not have mattered if we were at the rear, two rows back as there was ample space . The view of Elba , with it mountains , was gorgeous and provided another wonderful backdrop for a relaxing day on the beach,

There are free paddle boats to explore the bay.

There is a hotel restaurant on the beach, serving wonderful pizzas. The drinks were reasonable , the coffees being cheaper than coffee chains in the UK. We ate a number of times in this restaurant and just along the bay. The sunsets are lovely as you would expect.

You can choose to go half-board or full board on a day-by-day basis. The evening meal is €50, which is superb value for a four course meal of the highest quality with wonderful service.

I was sad to leave ; monies permitting, we will definitely return. It is definitely a place to bring family and friends.

Room Tip: I was happy with our room. It is not the suite-like room of the Waldorf. You can pay extra for an up...

We stayed in that hotel for a week with our two children. This is a very nice hotel in a fantastic location. The plus are clearly the beach and the swimming pool. The beach is extremely nice with beautiful pine trees and a very nice restaurant in some kind of a hut (the beach area is protected and it seems difficult/impossible to put uggly buildings on this sea shore). The rooms are nice and the main restaurant is quite nice too. The clientele is a bit old fashioned which is kind of nice. Some people dress really well for dinner and there is a great piano player for after dinner drinks. Overall a good experience. It is clearly not perfect but I would not mind going back.

My family have just come back from our third visit to this wonderful hotel, and I expect there shall be a lot more. The fact that it is noted as a Relais & Chateaux hotel justifies a visit enough; and even though other reviewers may state that it is not a 'normal' R&C hotel, this is by no means a negative point - one can argue this point, given that it is somewhat different to other R&C hotels; it is slightly larger, for example. However, the hotel itself is so full of 'pros' that even if there was any 'con' (for there are none I can think of - and believe me, I've tried to think of one) it would be so far outweighed.

The luscious greenery and treeways shelter the hotel in its midst; the lobby is extremely welcoming, the pool is accommodatingly large, the grounds are extensive, the view is fantastic from every balcony; the location is ideal - reachable Tuscan cities and sites like Pisa and Lucca a drive away, 5 minutes from Punta Ala's commercial centre, and 5 minutes from its own private beach, La Pagoda. Here guests can enjoy their own deck-chairs and sun-beds, personal cabinas, free-of-charge pedalos or rowboats, and the only (if I'm not mistaken) buffet-style lunch on the entire resort beachfront in its uniquely designed roundhouse pagoda. The food is, of course, exceptional. This is Italy after all. A new addition to 2012 was the availability of pizzas, which one can even have on the beach in their deckchair! These are delicious and the range of desserts never fail to impress.

Back at the hotel, dinners are just as good, with a cosy atmosphere created in the hotel's extensive terrace restaurant, where one can watch the elegant Tuscan sunset. The rooms feature a tiled floor and balcony, with a large bathroom and a king-size bed, and offer views of either the Tuscan hills or the town in the valley with the beach just in sight to the right.

But for me, the factor that makes the Gallia Palace what it is is the people. A family-run hotel, the staff are among some of the friendliest, funniest and efficient I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and they all really make an effort to make the hotel feel like home. The owning family themselves are constantly out and about, always happy and incredibly hospitable and caring.

All in all, my three stays at the Gallia Palace (2011, 2012, 2013) have definitely confirmed to me that there is no better place in the Mediterranean for the perfect beach holiday. Tuscany can not be experienced anywhere greater and I look forward to coming again to what almost now feels like a summer home.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the town valley (as I said) offer a much more preferable and aesthetically-pleasing vie...
