“Deluxe Suite Sea View - enough said”
Reviewed 15 August 2012

I stayed at both the Caruso and Palazzo Sasso. Both are amazing (see my review of Caruso), but there were two particularly special things about Palazzo Sasso.

First, if you are willing to splurge on the Deluxe Suite Sea View, do it. I'm not sure if there are multiple rooms of this class, but we had the room on the top floor, with a giant balcony having what is probably the most beautiful view I've ever seen in my life. It's so high up that you feel like you're floating in the clouds over the mountains with the sea below, and the best part is, you get to experience this view by yourself (or with a loved one, as I did!) There are no other terraces on the floor so you have 100% privacy. It is about what I imagine heaven to be like. The room itself was nice enough, but the terrace was really what is special about this suite (and what you're paying for).

Second, Sasso by the Sea is awesome. It's a beautiful multi-level club, but the best place in my opinion are the beds at the lower level, right on the water.... my husband literally jumped right from his sun bed into the ocean. Sasso was also the only beach club we visited in our trip that was free... a nice change from places in Capri (though I highly recommend da Luigi if you're looking for a club in Capri). The food is also amazing, and the staff are incredibly nice and attentive.

There were other nice things about Sasso (the live music at cocktail hour at night, the two Michellin star restaurant, the great staff and concierge), but our room and the beach club were definitely the highlights.

We have been 10 times to this wonderful hotel and it never disappoints.
The outdoor spaces are idyllic, both at the main hotel and sasso by the sea, the rooms at the front are delightful with great bathrooms and wonderful views and the staff are the warmest and kindest you will find anywhere... while still being fantastically professional. Breakfast on the terrace looking at layers of hills and mountains and down to the sea while eating lovely food is a real highlight
It's in a great location and is truly one of those special places

We stayed in Palazzo Sasso for 3 nights. The pricing was pretty egregious but given july/aug height of the season this was to be expected. We have stayed in some very nice hotels globally – especially in asia and know you get less for your money in high season in Europe but given testimonials from friends who’d stayed there we thought it was probably worth it.

The room itself was a bit depressing – it had a “lateral sea view”, which in fairness was pretty decent- you couldn’t see the view from the room itself but out on the (miniscule) balcony – the view down the coast was amazing – however the room itself was quite dark and very small. It had white tiles on the floor and traditional Italian décor which actually seemed dated and a bit tired (not at all like the very chic communal areas elsewhere in the hotel). There was no storage, there was a luggage rack for one suitcase but we had to clear the desk for the 2nd suitcase which was unsatisfactory. Same goes for the bathroom – we ended up having to keep all our toiletries on the floor or in the bidet (gross) which was clearly not ideal. There was only a shower which I guess was to be expected, given the overall size of the room but disappointing none the less. It was also 2 twin beds pushed together with a blatant divide between the 2 which in a five star hotel doesn’t seem especially appropriate or deluxe. Positives were the Bulgari bath products and the frette bed linen and towels which added nice touches of luxury – they also left chocolates when they turned down the room at night.

Indeed overall levels of service were charming and really good – at the pool, the restaurant for breakfast, and especially the reception and beach club. On subject of which this was perhaps the only other niggle, they have a shuttle to service the beach club which leaves hourly and you need to book onto – if you don’t book in time the only way of getting there is getting a taxi which is EUR 35 each way – ie EUR 70 to use their wonderful sea side resource. The drive takes about 10 mins and is at the bottom of the hill so considering the brevity of the journey the insanely expensive taxi adds insult to injury and just leaves a bad taste, given the beach club was invariably very quiet they just aren’t making use of this amazing place, which given the position of ravello itself miles above the sea is a real selling point.

So… I think you have to conclude that you’re not paying for an amazing room but for a location and a hotel which is great in terms of service and quality overall. Ravello itself was magical and I can’t imagine a nicer place to spend a few days on the amalfi coast which has a magical quality about it…and is just so much more refined than amalfi and positano. I don’t know whether I would necessarily stay at this hotel again, I would likely try one of the other places out of curiosity and hopefully get a better quality of room itself for the money. Perhaps given Europe in high summer however this just isn’t possible!

It's just heaven. Nearly everything about Ravello is heaven, and Palazzo Sasso -- and most especially the Orizzonte "Suite" (really not a suite, but the most beautiful very large bedroom on the planet) makes heaven even more beautiful.

The hotel concierge arranged everything for us: flowers and champagne in the room (not complimentary, but nicely done), boats trips and guides and restaurant reservations and drivers on those terrifying mountain roads. No matter how many times we called for a bucket of ice (and yes, we did learn how to ask for it in Italian, just to be polite), they brought it with great good-nature. The pool staff felt like family. The seaside satellite was a delightful little adventure. The breakfasts (for us, enjoyed "en camera") were feasts.

Get up in the morning and open your floor-to-ceiling French doors to the sunshine, breezes, and chirping birds of the Amalfi Coast. You really will not want to come home.

Room Tip: Room 102 -- the "Orizzonte," is gorgeous. The balcony is a little smaller than some, but...

This is, by far, THE best hotel we have ever stayed in. We first visited as part of our honeymoon in 2002, again in 2008 and again this year. What makes this place so good is the absolutely outstanding customer service, from wonderful staff (many who have been there several years), helped by fantastic food and beautiful surroundings. It isn't cheap. To celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary this year we chose to spend 3 nights here rather than 2 weeks in Greece. It is that good. I, very much, hope we can visit again.

The eponymous restaurant "Rossellini's" is reminiscent of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini's romantic liaison here. High above the Bay of Salerno, the Med can be viewed from the rooms, patios, pool, spa, gardens, lobby, and restaurants. The service is better than the top Roman hotels. A private beach club is a welcome feature. Expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for corner rooms which are large and sunny.

Just stayed at Palazzo Sasso to attend a wedding in Ravello. Our room was very nice. Loved the outside bar - had drinks there while the sun went down. The staff was lovely and accomodating - not that we asked for much. We booked through Virtuoso but it being high season there was no upgrade available - which we found to be true in every hotel we stayed in during this time throughout the Amalfi coast. Breakfast is on the terrace overlooking the water - views and food were wonderful. Ravello is such a special place - be prepared to walk up and down wherever you go - flat shoes are the best! Highly recommend Palazzo Sasso.
