“Amazing Cooking Class”
Reviewed 28 June 2013

My family and I attended a cooking class with Chef Vincenzo Amatruda during our trip to the Amalfi Coast in the beginning of June. I have to say it was a highlight of our trip! Vincenzo was so personable and the environment so inviting we all felt right at home. There were 11 of us in the party and Vincenzo made sure we were all able to participate in the cooking experience. After learning how to create an incredible meal, we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor with a fantastic selection of wine. Vincenzo went out of his way to make sure everyone was having a wonderful time. At the end of the afternoon the owner of the hotel stopped in to make sure we enjoyed our experience. I highly recommend this cooking class!! Thanks Vincenzo for an unforgettable afternoon!

We didn't stay at the hotel, but we attended a cooking class there. It was wonderful! We had the whole family (all four kids), but our instructor, Vincenzo, encouraged everyone to get involved. He made the experience very enjoyable and had everyone laughing and feeling at home. Even the eleven year old boy loved it! The food was fantastic, as well. We would highly recommend this to anyone, from experienced chefs to absolute beginners.

We Stayed in Villa Maria for 5 nights. The room although small was clean and nicely decorated. The view from terrace was great. The bathroom was really small (to be honest It's a bit silly to put a bided when there is no space for proper shower)The fridge in the room did not work (it had exactly the room temperature inside). We were told that is was ok and it's suppose to be like that. The walls are really thin.We could hear every word behind the wall. However the real issue was the food. The breakfast was really boring. When you come for 5 nights you expect some variety. But no,every day the same. And very poor selection plus coffee which tasted like coffee cereal. After two days we were sick of it.Dinner was even more disappointing.Very dull and no flavour. We would recommend this place for one night stay only. And find another place to eat.

We spend two nights in this beautiful hotel, away from the center of Ravello, overlooking the ocean. We had a lovely room with a fairly large terrace.
Breakfast was not served until 8 am, and some items such as omelettes were not available right away, which was a little inconvenient for us, as we were hiking and wanted to get an early start. We had dinner on the terrace on the second night. The view over the coast was breathtaking and the meal was excellent.

We stayed at the Villa Maria for a week in May 2013, the weather was not the best but the view from our room in the annexe in the garden was superb, right down to the sea at Amalfi. The staff were friendly although we did encounter a problem when we asked for breakfast at 7.00am as we were leaving early to go out on a trip, at first we were told we could only have a cup of coffee at that time but then reluctantly that OK perhaps we could have a bowl of cereal as well. When we arrived at 7.00am for our breakfast we waited more than ten minutes for the coffee and no sign of the cereal! Luckily by almost 7.30 they were setting up the breakfast buffet so we were able to quickly eat something before rushing out to get our waiting taxi. Not what we would expect from a 4 star hotel. The restaurant had nice food and good service on the nights we used it but because it was too cold to sit outside it sometimes lacked a little atmosphere. Would we stay there again? Maybe, the room was nice, the setting unbeatable and had we been able to eat out on the terrace without freezing to death we would have enjoyed it more.

Room Tip: If you can go for one of the superior rooms with a sea view.

Having booked the Giordano the sister hotel for 3 nights we arrived to be shown basic rooms the first not even a proper shower. We refused to stay and were offered rooms at the Villa Maria. These too were poor and overlooked. We settled on one for the night. The best room they said. Poor with a shower that worked badly. Woke up in the morning and though it was still night only to discover it was small holes in the curtain. I cannot believe the other reviews. I travel a lot all over the world and this is not a hotel but poor bed and breakfast. How on earth it holds 4 stars????? We checked out next morning
I do have to add that the staff were all friendly and helpfull but defending something that is so far past it's sell by date it is a joke
Even the restaurant that does do cooking classes. Was only average in taste and 2 of the side dishes served were cold...we should have sent backbut by this time we really had enough and decided to check out. The views were good at the restaurant and enjoyable but do not go for food and definitely not stay. There are plent of other good hotels in this town
David Rocco who put this in his book and TV program needs to come back and review it now

villamariaravello, Proprietario at Villa Maria Hotel, responded to this review, 21 July 2013
I am the owner of the Hotels Giordano & Villa Maria, both badly reviewed by the kind guest.
Herewith, I would like to give some explanations since, in my opinion, my hotels have been unfairly sentenced.
In the original clients’ booking request, the clients said they were David Rocco’s friends, who personally recommended our hotels.
I phoned D. Rocco and he said he never met these clients before, also because, if it had happened, D. would’ve directly phoned me to make the reservation, but it never happened!
Needless to say that all clients are, regardless of whether we have friends in common, very important to us and we would take care of them all in the same way!

When the clients made the reservation request, they were offered the options for my two hotels and they chose the Htl Giordano, since it is cheaper than the other.

Being the hotel from a historic building, it consists of rooms and bathrooms of different sizes and the peculiarities of the hotel is in the originality of ceramic tiles, all different in shapes and colors, and the “strength” of the hotel is the nice swimming pool and proximity to the square.
The hotel was completely renovated a few years ago and all clients make their congratulations for the warm hospitality and the beauty of the places.
Since the hotel has no sea view, it has lower prices than villa maria and the client we are talking about, in addition, had also an agreement to have a lower price than our official prices.
The first room we offered him was a superior room (larger than the Standard), and the bathroom had the option of jacuzzi+ shower. Since he did not like it, we changed to another Superior room, larger than the previous one with a terrace. He did not like it either!
We still offered them a further option at the Villa Maria, a Superior room without any extra charge although it is larger than the Standard category, with hydro massage shower.
He liked it, he spent there one night but he decided to leave the day after!
As this was not enough, he has also badly reviewed the restaurant. I personally talked to our maitre and he firmly told me that the client had never complained about anything. If he did, the maitre would have doubtless found a solution!
It is defamatory to mention the restaurant that way.
We have always received positive reviews about our cuisine, which is why it was awarded by the Gambero Rosso and BBC filmed our chefs at work!
After everything, the customer then stayed in a 5 star luxury hotel, whose price varies from 800 € to 3000 €.
He could not claim an imperial suite from a 4 star hotel and at such low cost.
If he clearly highlighted his needs from the beginning, we could have offered our junior suite, which is very spacious, with a large terrace, sea views and hydro massage bath.
The only truth found, was a little hole in the curtain – which we got it mended and the only reason that drove the client to write that bad review was maybe the fact that he had to move from an hotel to the other, the tiredness of the journey and the heat.
We would’ve really appreciated (instead) if the client noticed our great effort into satisfying all his requests – We have been only rewarded by him as “a joke” – that’s the real shame!
In summery, there are so many people who do not say that are David Rocco’s common friends that ask to meet me, after having watched me onto D. ROCCO’s TV Shows….
I am still wondering why a supposed friend of david rocco (that is my close friend) came into my hotels and did not even asked to meet me… Try to draw the conclusions!

Wow...we loved this hotel. The staff are very friendly and the owner is a font of knowledge and can not do enough for you.
It is a good idea to call the hotel once you arrive in the town square, that way you are met by someone who will happily guide you to the car park (free at its sister hotel, Giordano, the pool is also here) and arrange for your luggage to be transported via electric buggy to the hotel, you will have to walk the 5/10 minutes up the hill as they scoot past you though.
The Hotel is full of lovely artworks and the seating areas in and outside are relaxing and enjoyable any time of the day. Have a look in the photo albums and you’re sure to be Ooohing and Ahhhing at the various weddings and celeb guests they have had.
We were fortunate enough to tag along to an impromptu tour of Gore Vidal’s villa that the Villa Marias owner had purchased; as we peered at the spectacular views he told us tales of Jackie Onassis' Stay and Gore being the local translator much to the BBC's surprise. The owner was also happy for my husband and I to have the key to the stunning Villa Eva, a venue he has for events and weddings, just breathtaking.
The food in the restaurant is very nice, if a little salty for my taste, but it’s of a high standard. It was one of our pricier meals but worth it. The night time views from the terrace are just lovely. At breakfast you are met by a huge table full of choice but do try the omelettes, delicious.
We can highly recommend the cooking course, Vincenzo our teacher and chef was fantastic, enthusiastic and engaging. I'm left with great memories and yummy recipes, shame I can’t go to my organic garden for the ingredients as was done at Villa Maria.
We stayed at the Villa Maria for 5 nights towards the end of our honeymoon and we wished we had stayed longer. Ravello is a good central point for visiting other places; we travelled up to Sorrento for our final 3 nights in Italy when we could have easily stayed here.
There are regular buses to Amalfi but it is also an enjoyable walk down stone steps and takes about half an hour, from there you can get boat and bus tours all around the Amalfi coast.
We will hopefully revisit Villa Maria in years to come as it was certainly one of my favourites.
