Graal Hotel Ravello
Ranked #16 of 21 Hotels in Ravello
Reviewed 18 October 2011

We stayed in the Hotel Graal for 2 nights and wish we could have stayed forever. The room we were in (554) was simply furnished but spacious and had the most spectacular views I've ever seen. The hotel was incredibly easy to find (you see it right when you enter Ravello on your left), and the hotel pool was exquisite (if a bit chilly!). When you're in Ravello, I'd definitely recommend walking down to Minori for a day - the hotel provides information on the walks (a bit strenuous, especially coming back up), but you really get a chance to see lots of beautiful and quaint places on the hillside.
The hotel provided everything we needed for the perfect stay. We didn't eat dinner there, but the breakfast was great, and overall we could not find fault with Hotel Graal.

Room Tip: Room 554 was fabulous. Definitely request a room with a sea view!

We had 3 nights at this hotel and it was a wonderful relaxing time. The hotel is in Ravello which is on the top of the cliff looking down over the water. We had flown in to Naples from Venice and drove here with a rental car, definitely not for the faint of heart as the road in is harrowing (yet thrilling). From the hotel it's a 2 minute walk into the town which is a great place to visit with 2 major villas and an historic church, you must thoroughly see all. The bus stop is very close which will take you to any of the nearby towns including Amalfi. There are some great hiking paths down through small villages to the sea side. When we arrived we went to the pool terrace which looks out over the water with an amazing view. The breakfast room is large and airy with great veiws. The food is good with a wide variety of fresh pastries, fruits, home made jams etc. We had dinner at the hotel one night and it was very good. The hotel is very clean but dated. Our room was a deluxe room with sea view and balcony. We found the room small by comparison to others we had on the trip and the decor was a bit tired, however it was very nice. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. It's a great place to stay to explore the area.

We only stayed 1 night and wished we could have stayed for 1 more!

Pros:
- Amazing views;
- Clean and comfortable rooms with a verandah and more amazing views
- Clean and modern bathroom with a powerful shower;
- Friendly staff;
- Roof top pool was clean and refreshing (though it could do with some resurfacing)
- Great breakfast
- Located very close to everything we needed (including the bus stop that connects to Amalfi)

Cons:
- Couldn't get free Wifi to work on my phone (but I was able to use the free computer in the lobby without issue so it was no big deal in the end)
- Off smell in the corridor leading to our room

Other:
- We caught the bus from Amalfi. It's cheap and stops right near the hotel though but be warned that it can be challenging to secure a seat and get your luggage on.

We have stayed at the Graal many times and felt this year sadly we didn't receive value for money. Plus sides were Reception staff, Cleaning Staff and Waiters during the Evening Meal. Poor breakfast experience which is very sad. A clean hotel in a super position but having looked around better value can easily be found. Breakfast very poor and repetitive compared to previously. If an omelette or similar ordered an extra charge of 4 euros + charged. The worst crime was watered down fruit juice - horrible - something you would expect in a Travelodge ! You would not starve but you certainly wouldn't be impressed by the rather dull cake, bread, ham & cheese served with a few cereals and homemade jams. A little fresh fruit was left (including a lemon and bruised apples one day - bizarre). For cereals tinned apricots, peaches & prunes "yuk". Staff not terribly friendly in the morning and though a 10am deadline, sulky faces if people arrived after 9am with menus hidden so no extra demands were made, very sad. Dinner staff were much more cheerful and pleasant and dinner most nights was adequate but not amazing, fairly small portions and poor desserts much better at the Restaurant Vittoria and the Hotel Amore served much better food and one felt it wasn't a chore. A good lunch at Hotel Rufolo too though expensive for the quantity and again surly waiters. People will not revisit Ravello if the people and value continue to fall which would be very sad. Even a charge of 10 euros a night was made to park the car which came as rather a surprise.

Room Tip: A sea view if you are prepared to pay for it !

We stayed here for a week in a room on the 3rd floor which was desperately in need of a refresh. Cracked tiles, blackened parts of the shower unit (no bath) and dilapidated paint made me feel a little cheated for 170 euros a night (plus 11 euros per day parking).

However, the shower was nice and the room was comfortable enough despite the awful pillows. The hotel staff were generally friendly if maybe a bit stand-offish at times. There was an episode where we appeared to cause offence to them by asking to book a table for a party at another restaurant. This was merely due to somebody else's request but it was taken as a slight against them and we were pretty much lambasted although they did book it for us. This made us avoid the restaurant as they didn't deserve any more money than they were getting for the over priced room.

The pool area is nice, as long as you can get in early enough to get a bed with a view of the coast.

We had a group of friends who had managed to get in to apartments at Da Salvatore and we were quite jealous as they had the same view as us, decent facilities (just no Sky TV is the only difference I think) but for a lot less money. Plus you could get fabulous pizza delivered to your room from their restaurant (for about 7/8 euros a go).

Overall, a decent hotel but very overpriced unless we just had a poor man's room.

Room Tip: 4th floor looked a lot nicer.

Amazing view! Courteous staff, nice location (close to bus stop, a couple blocks from city center). They have a pool overlooking the cliffs- beautiful! (It could stand to be repainted, but hey, great view.)

We had a fabulous week at the family run Hotel Graal. It was comfortable and friendly,more art deco style than italian villa, it had the all important swimming pool, the food was really excellent and the views of the amalfi coast from the rooms, restaurant, bar and pool were fantastic! The hotel staff were at all times friendly, helpful and efficient. The interconnecting rooms worked really well with the children. I am a coeliac and they had a gluten free menu for my use, and made me special desserts!
Ravello was stunning with the village centre an easy walk and the centre square with its big church, cafes and little shops. Two wonderful villas with gardens to explore and a music festival in the July when we were there.
We had elected not to drive ourselves having noted some comments on the coast road. With the bus service running from Ravello down to Amalfi every half hour and the fabulous family run Ravellotaxi firm we were very happy with the decision we made and had a very relaxing enjoyable holiday.
Pompeii was incredibly hot and busy, Herculaneum was smaller, quieter and to our mind more interesting with the most amazing bath house mosiacs!
