Reviewed 28 October 2008

what a lovely hotel for a loving couple to stay. Old style but that doesnt mean old fashioned! Where to start; we were one day early, got an upgrade to the suite overlooking the amalfi coast, and joined in a fresh and tasty diner in the restaurant. Antonio was so helpfull as was his staff, but never overcrowding you.

Ravello being very romantic and stylish made us walk a lot over the cobble streets, but it was a joy to come back to parsifal and sit on the terras to overlook the ever changing views, freshen up and enjoy the evening meal, so well prepared. (Thanks for the birthday cake antonio...) Just a show of attention you dont get much anymore in the worlds hotels.

Things to see and do...Pompey was eyeopener, as was the villa Cimbrone..get a glas of wine and olives in the tea garden...

If you like cooking; Mama Agatha in Ravello (see other review) Great stay, we will certainly be back!

Ravello is a beautiful setting and such beauty on the Amalfi Coast does not come cheap, so the Parsifal scores points as an affordable hotel with a beautiful view in this picturesque town. The quality of the rooms is variable (new wing great, older main building much less so) but I gather this is reflected in the room rates. The terrace and gardens are beautiful with a spectacular view for a drink as the sun sets over the bay. The hotel is small and family-run, which makes it charming and makes up for the very average food. Foodies might be easily disappointed here, but it's more a case of expecting great food and getting reasonable food than a reason not to stay here. Note that there is no swimming pool.

Stayed for 5 nights in April 2008.

Holiday was easy to book, pleasant and relaxing. Emailed the hotel direct for reservation and booked Easyjet to Naples and a hire car on the internet. Unfortunately the Stirling/Euro exchange rate took a dive, so it ended up costing more that we planned - in hindsite we would have been better paying in advance.

We have stayed at many hotels around the world, but none where every single person was so helpful and friendly. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel special and important - it was almost like visiting family. Nothing was too much trouble and anything we wanted was immediately done.

The staff also made sure we were informed about events and attractions to visit and made personal recommendations based on what we liked doing.

The food on the first night was not to our liking, and because the hotel insist on half-board we spoke with manager Antonio about our concerns. He was genuinely upset that we were unhappy and all the stops were pulled out to make sure the food for the rest of the week was perfect.

When we were there half of the rooms were being refurbished and modernised. The room we were in had an unusual covered balcony/terrace and fantastic views over the coast. However, because it was in the next phase of planned refurbishments, the furniture and plumbing were 'quaint' though perfectly servicable. We were already expecting this from other reviews, so I could quite easily imagine stepping back in time when we went in the room.

On the negative side, the bed was extremely hard in our opinion and we slept on blankets. I have heard that this is quite common in Italian hotels. However, that aside, as soon as the refit is completed, because of its spectacular view and balcony, we are sure it will be one of the best places to stay in Ravello.

Ravello is also a great place to visit - once you have found it. We drove down the very twisty and turny hairpin bends from Naples - great fun, but not for the timid driver! The town is slightly touristy, but no where near as bad as the next town of Amalfi. Lots of walks and places to explore, but not many places to eat. The best one was the pizza restaurant just off the main square on the Via Del Rudolfo.

We based ourselves in Ravello, but visited Amafi and took a drive down the coast (worth doing), Capri (don't bother), Pompeii (go early - the coaches turn up early afternoon), Herculaneum (not as big as Pompeii, but more complete houses), Vesuvius (if it hasn't erupted again).

In April there were not that many people around, but I can imagine that it would be extremely busy in the summer, with lots of cars on the narrow roads. Apparently April and September/October are good months if you want reasonable weather and not too many tourists.

Would thoroughly recommend the Town and the Hotel Parsifal for a shorter out of high season holiday.

Judith & David

My husband and I have just returned from a week long stay at the Hotel Parsifal and already we feel homesick.

Never in our previous travels have we encountered such a fantatastic, homely hotel experience. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt more like we were visiting friends than holidaying alone.

The food alone is enough to earn this hotel the fantastic reputation it has deservedly achieved and in no way are words enough to describe the culinary delights served up by Antonio and his family.

The accomodation had aged charm and oozed character whilst also providing the spaciousness and comfort sought when away from home.

However, the icing on the cake was the enthusiatic and friendly approach from all who work at the Parsifal. All of the staff were eager to ensure we made the most of our time in Ravello and catered for our every need, whilst leaving us to our own devices when we desired.

Thanks to you all for making our holiday one of the best yet.

Where do I begin? The communication I had with Antonio long before I ever arrived at Hotel Parsifal was excellent. He always replied to my emails promptly. He then made sure our stay was the best hotel experience we have ever had when we did arrive. This family run jewel of a hotel is the only place I will ever stay on the whole of the Amalfi Coast. It came highly recommended from what used to be a total stranger and now a friend. I will always be grateful to her for it. Our room was so lovely and comfortable, the food was beyond excellent, but more than anything, we were treated like visiting family rather than simply hotel guests. Breakfast was always a nice selection sure to please any palate and dinner was so wonderful, there is really no need to look elsewhere for fine dining. Everything was fresh and fantastic, and I miss it every night when I sit down to dinner in Texas. Nothing compares. The service was the best I've had anywhere. As if that weren't enough, you have an amazing view of the coastline and the beautiful turquoise blue ocean, or the stars at night reflecting off of the water. It is a short walk into the square of Ravello where you will meet many friendly locals and enjoy a cappuccino or two, but then, the Hotel Parsifal also makes a great one that you must try. I cannot say one negative thing about Antonio, his lovely family, or the Hotel Parsifal. It has such an Italian old worldly and very charming feel on the outside (NOT a Holiday Inn!!) , and very charming, tastefully furnished, sparkling clean and inviting on the inside. Transportation in the local area is plentiful-a 24 hour bus ticket from the tobacco shop (2 or 3 euros) allows you to traverse the area down to Amalfi, and other nearby areas; and the ferry to Positano is a nice trip around the coast. That said, Positano and Amalfi were very heavy with tourists while Ravello is quiet and relaxing. You can have Positano at your fingertips for a day trip, and relax in the quiet evening in Ravello away from the tourist traps. I only hope that future tourists will respect these things about Ravello so it will never change. It was absolutely wonderful and Antonio and his hotel were the icing on the cake. I give the Hotel Parsifal five stars.

We have recently returned from a excellent weeks stay at the Parsifal for the week from June 9th.

The hotel location is wonderful, the standard of our rooms superb, catering of a very good quality and the view really stunning. However the most outstanding aspect was the attention to our needs provided by Antonio and his staff (family and friends). The Parsifal is a small hotel and we had hoped for a friendly, helpful attitude from the staff. We were more than satisfied. We were provided with all the information we could need, good advice, and lots of support, even if Italy’s football team needed it more than we did! Overall a more friendly atmosphere would be hard to find.

We're sure that we'll return and next time will know not to hire a car, as the advice given not to drive was 100% correct. The bus service locally is absolutely the best way of getting about, inexpensive, and much less taxing on the nerves than trying to drive. I believe that taxis can be arranged from Naples airport which would be even better.

It is really pleasing to be able to wholeheartedly recommended the hotel to others and we have already done so. This is a rarity for us as we visit many hotels each year on business and very few live up to expectations. Congratulations!

Tony Simpson

My wife and I just returned from a little over two weeks in Italy, the last 3 nights staying in Ravello at the Hotel Parsifal. We have NEVER had such a wonderful experience(and we travel a lot) anywhere. Tony and his family and staff are the absolute best : our room was terrific and the view incredible, the cloister and main building and common areas beautiful and beautifully kept up(a prize photo we will probably have blown up and framed is of the HP of green clover amidst the red begonias), and the restaurant food and service as good as we had anywhere in Italy. While we honestly loved every single thing about Italy, from Milan to Venice to Florence to Rome to Ravello, the Parsifal is the place that we must return to when we get back to Italy. Tony and his family and staff provided us a memory to last a lifetime!
