“2ND Time Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2013

I have just recently returned from a trip to Reggio Emilia area of Italy. I stayed in the Mercure Astoria and was originally booked to stay for 3 nights... we ended up coming back to stay an extra night because we enjoyed the hotel so much. The staff were really friendly and efficient from the very start. Our check in was smooth and quick. We were told about all the facilities and offered free wi-fi codes. the room itself was perfect, I had contacted the hotel a week before I arrived and asked for a room overlooking the park. They answered me the same day and said they would do all they could, I got the exact room i had asked for on arrival. The room is spacious, spotless and well appointed. I really have to highlight the team that are working there the reception staff were all lovely and extremely pleasant always saying hello and goodbye as we were entering or leaving the hotel. I must give a special mention to the lady working in restaurant for breakfast she was so attentive making sure we had everything we wanted and telling us about the various coffees. The hotel is a great location within Reggio we drove to it with no bother from Bologna airport and availed of the free car parking provided in front of the hotel. It is 5 minutes walking distance to the main squares and shopping areas of Reggio. If you are staying in the Reggio Emilia do not go past the Mercure Astoria for a place to stay. Definate 5 out of 5 from me ....... will be back

Room Tip: Floor 1 if you are travelling with a family as the balconies are bigger.Other than that a room overl...

I spent just one night in the hotel and I did not use any additional service.
Anyway, my experience was good: quick check-in and check-out, quiet room, comfortable bed.
The hotel is not far from the city center, can easily be reached by car and is adjacent to a nice park (perfect for an avening or morning walk...)

Hotel is located in a very good location on walking distance to basically everything in central Reggio Emilia. The hotel itself is becoming a bit tired and I do believe it requires renovation works. My room was spotless and we had wifi for free. Breakfast was good. The rate was not expensive, around 70 EU per night and this hotel has got parking which is definitely a plus if you are staying during the week. I do recommend this hotel if you are coming to Reggio by car and you want a central location. This is a modern 1980 style building... so... if you are looking for charm or a romantic hotel this is not the hotel for you! I would say this hotel would suit best business travellers.

I stayed here for a Reggio early years study week. I traveled alone & the hotel was perfect for my needs. Good wi-fi, clean room & fairly decent breakfast.
I had a room looking over the park which was lovely. I had a few niggles during my week with the electronic card system but overall the hotel was good value & quaily. Service from all staff was very good.

Tip: the coffee from the machine is pretty naff but if you ask for one they bring fresh delisious coffee.

Second stay at this hotel, location is great, within a few minutes walk of the centre of town. Room is ok, although shower is tiny. Breakfast only average. Staff all very professional and helpful. Stay here if you want to be very handy to the town.

I have stayed here four times visiting relatives in Reggio Emilia and have had variable experiences. I stay there only when other options are not available, but the price is reasonable, the rooms are clean and the location is an easy walk to the center of town, so it can be an acceptable choice (with the major exception of the smoke issue below, which is why I'm giving it a poor rating).

The real problem with this hotel is the smell of cigarette smoke and their inability to guarantee smoke-free rooms to guests who require it. The vast majority of the rooms are smoking rooms (it’s surprising to find a modern hotel chain with this policy, isn’t it?) and even those on the nominally “non smoking” floors can reek of smoke as well.

However, what really makes me fume is that you won’t see it coming and may not be able to do anything about it when you arrive. As of today, absolutely nothing in the Mercure.com online booking process or the hotel confirm prepares you for the fact that you may be condemned to a smoking room on a smoking floor. These days this just isn’t an issue, so it’s a bit of a rude shock here.

On my most recent visit two weeks ago, when traveling with an asthmatic relative who really could not tolerate the smoke for health reasons, we were informed by front desk staff that we had to accept the smoking room, the hotel was fully booked and there was no way to be accommodated otherwise. It is not acceptable to impose this on guests in 2013. Until they change their approach (which I am taking up with them separately) I will not stay there again, but my advice is to contact the hotel separately from the online process and get a promise of a smoke-free room if that is important to you.

As for the rooms, I have stayed in two very different types of rooms: (1) “superior” rooms, which were updated and designed in a modern, clean style and had a small balcony over the park, and (2) standard rooms which are un-renovated and in a dated style and looked out the back of the hotel. The two types feel like completely different hotels. If in doubt, ask to see the other type. Only the 2nd and 4th floors are non-smoking.

Room Tip: I think it is worth going for the renovated "superior" rooms. They are much nicer and more...
