“Great views - Worth the walk!”

Owner description: The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

“Great views - Worth the walk!”

Fantastic views of the lake, it's not an easy walk especially in hot temperatures. My advice would be to go early in morning when it's cooler & quieter. The Bastion itself is perfect for photo opportunities and if your feeling fit you can continue climbing to Santa Barbara Church - I didn't but my husband did and the photos looked amazing.

“I Can See for Miles nd Miles and Miles.....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2013

Some say it's 20 minutes....it's about 30 - 40 but worth the hike. The views are spectacular and there is a nice cafe to while away the time while having a nice cooling drink. There is a second stage up to the Santa Barbara church, which is higher up the mountain and looks steep.... there I've given it away, yes I stopped at the Bastion with a nice cold Paulaner Beer... maybe next year

“Fantastic Views”

A long walk up a steep path, but well worth the views. There's a café at the top so you always have a refreshing Hugo Spritz after your exertions!!

“WORTH THE HIKE!”

It was hard work getting there in the heat but wow! The views are amazing. The cafe is very good and I loved sitting on the terrace feeling like I was in the sky as I looked down!

“Amazing Views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2013

Il Bastione is a good 30 mintue shady walk at a leisurely pace. It is steep but the path is wide, easy to follow and there are benches along the way if you need a rest.
We had a drink at the little cafe at the top but it shuts at 2.30pm so don't arrive too late!
The views from the top are simply stunning and are well worth the walk up (and down!).
