Review of The Bastion

Owner description: The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

“Great visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

The Bastion overlooks Riva. It's a bit of a climb but not too difficult unless you are unfit. Worth asking for directions because the path up to it isn't entirely obvious. The little café is pleasant and offers fantastic views.

“Nice easy walk”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2013

You get to the Bastion up a twisty well maintained path. You could probably do it in flip flops or sandals but I would recommend trainers at least. I did it in walking boots but I was going on up to Santa Barbara. The Bastion itself is just a ruined building but the views are worth the walk. It would be nice to have an information board to tell you a bit about the building as I've no idea what it was used for! There is a cafe here but can't comment on that as I didn't use it.

“The view is everything”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2013

Zig - zig paved path takes about 20 - 25 mins to reach the Bastione. Restaurant at fortress serves cold drinks and ice lollies but little else. Not much to the fort but the views over the lake and the main square in Riva are just amazing. Take a camera and binoculars and get a different perspective on the top of the lake.

“Worth the climb”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2013

The path to the Bastion is steep but not as hard as it appears from ground level. The views from the top over the harbour and town are great and the café a welcome opportunity to relax. The building itself is interesting..a pity there's no explanation/information boards

“A small castle - good views over Riva”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

Walked up here early one morning on the way to Santa Barbara. Not much at the castle when you get here. The walk up is in the trees so not great views but nice views of lake and town once you are there.
