Owner description: The Bastione, a tower of grey stone, located at the foot of Mount Rocchetta, is one the symbols of Riva del Garda, overlooking the city and Lake Garda. It was built in the early XVI century, just after the end of Venetian domination over Riva. It was destroyed in 1703 by the French troops under leadership of general Vendôme, who mined the main body thus rendering it unusable. It’s a few minutes walk from the port of Riva, along a road that winds through the black pinewood of the lower Rocchetta. The path then rises further to the chapel of St. Barbara on the mountainside (610m) and the Rocchetta itself (1520m). The Bastione has recently been restored. Visitors may see the imposing external bodywork and what is left of the inside from a winding staircase. The locations enjoys an excellent view.

We walked up to the Bastione during our stay in Riva. While it was very hot and quite a steep trek, we felt it was worth it when we reached the top and were treated to beautiful panoramic views of Riva. There is a coffee shop at the Bastione for well-earned refreshments!

Took longer than told to walk there (about 45 minutes) and when we got there the cafe was closed on that day

It is a long, hard, very steep road up to the Bastion, but lovely to sit and have a drink and snack overlooking the resort

Great place to go to look out over Riva, with only a small bit of effort. There are beautiful views from the bastion and great history surround the building. One can just imagine being attacked from the lake while inside the bastion during the past. Go see it on you way to Santa Barbara church!!

If the walk up to the church is too much for you then this is an acceptable compromise. It's nice to come up and chill here as the views are just as lovely from the bastian as they are from the church. The canonball markings are visible on the stone walls of the bastian too!
