“The four stars of this hotel are for: Location, location, location....and location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2012

A good hotel with the perfect location right on the lake and in the middle of the town with all bars and restaurants very close by.

The hotel boasts an ice cre bar and restaurant open to the public and seems to do well with them. The food for hotel guests is just about acceptable but can be a bit bland and overcooked. The choices can be limited with veal, pork and fish on every night...the veggie choice can be simply a cricket ball sized piece of mozzarella and sliced tomatoes!

The gala dinner was a let-down with no choice at all and pretty slow service. The staff are pleasant and keen to help. Reception staff are good too, but dont ask about s room upgrade as they just can't contemplate that at all....

Rooms are ok (just) not over sized but clean and comfortable. No balconies as standard or a lake view. Worst of all is the lack of a garden area to sit. There is a sun terrace (with no shade at all) the size of a quarter tennis court, and that's it!

The WIFI is pants. Don't even bother with an iPad or iPhone. When you've tried to connect for the 20th time use the low cost public wifi on Luna3. A one off cost of 1€ is well worth it.

Overall, a good place to stay. Try and get an upgraded room with a balcony so you've got somewhere to sit, and don't expect too much from the 4 star restaurant

We have recently returned from a holiday at the Hotel Sole which we found to be perfect in every way. The hotel was wonderful, in a magnificent location to suit all ages with superb views and a wonderful atmosphere both during the day and on an evening. The hotel was very clean and tidy, the rooms were cleaned every day and the towels changed daily.
The Staff we found to be very helpful and on the whole very friendly, both in the restaurant and also the bars at the front and on reception. The staff in the restaurant being particularly helpful, offering alternative food when some courses did not suit.We found the food quality and selection to be excellent and what you would expect from an Italian hotel.
This is a Hotel and an area we would definitely visit again.

Have been going here for years on and off, not visited for a good few years and dissappointed with our visit August 2012. We visited twice throughount our stay just to see if it was an off day, it wasn't. Menu showed various fantastic ice cream dishes ranging from 4.5 to 8.5 euro, problem was they didn't resemble the pictures and had numerous ingredients missing from them, tasty but not what you ordered. Service was poor especially from the gent making the deserts, he even gave our two childrens seats to someone else whilst our boys went to the toilets. When we pointed out we needed the chairs he just asked us to wait and minute and then ignored us. When our children returned and he saw them he didn't apologise he just carried on and we had to move tables. Dont get me wrong they are good ice cream dishes but they aren't cheap and the service was bad, ages waiting to be served and fed. Pull your socks up Hotel Sole you used to be so much better !!

Hotel Sole is right on the lake front and also on the towns main square. You could not get a more central location. We stayed on a half board basis and the food was good and plentiful. Service varied depending on the waiter. Our room was in the annex and the room itself was very good. Cleanliness of the room was exceptioanally good.(Thank you Veronika) Air conditioning was good and is needed in italy in high Summer. The annex is reached by travelling down a passage at the rear of the kitchens and this is smelly and not in keeping with the high standard of the rest of the hotel. Get a room in the main building if possible. Excluding this the hoter facilities are very good and I will return.

We have just arrived back from a trip to beautiful Lake Garda, a lovely holiday spoilt only by the terrible food, and very poor service in this hotel. We were expecting lovely Italian food, but we were bitterly disappointed when we saw that our daily choices consisted of fish, pork or veal! Who eats tuna with roast potatoes and brussel sprouts?Shrimp pasta was exactly as described, two shrimp on a plate of pasta, actually one of our table neighbors actually counted three on his plate. The pork was so tough I couldn't cut it , never mind chew it, terrible food. The service was so slow keeping us waiting for literally hours in a hot stuffy dining room.Smiles were very few, more often non existent, with the exception of one young waiter. Obviously there is trouble in the kitchen, and it was made know to us by the surly service. The elevator is EXTREMELY slow and very small, making the steep climb up the stairs a much quicker way to the upstairs. Our room was nice, a balcony room overlooking the lake, if we didn't have that to look forward to our stay at the Sole would have been a disaster, especially at meal times.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for the balcony over looking the lake, it makes the holiday, the view is beautiful...

First things first. Riva and Lake Garda in general are very beautiful. We had some reservations regarding a “lakeside” holiday. However Lake Garda did not disappoint. Riva itself is a lovely Italian town with something for everyone. Lots of lively cafes, shops and restaurants in in a locality whose old town is mainly pedestrianized. It’s certainly a resort that appeals to all age groups including the older folks who can stroll around in a safe and “family” environment and to the younger generation who are clearly attracted by the windsurfing and huge number of other aquatic activities. Lake Garda itself is the star attraction. Lots of ferry boats will take you to all the lovely towns and villages that surround this huge lake. Our favourites were Limone and Malcesine. Get to Limone early before the “crowds” arrive. It’s basically a very pretty village with about three tiny streets and lots of shops selling all variety of products featuring lemons. Well worth the visit though. The ferries are rather on the expensive side but what’s the point of going to Lake Garda and not having a sail? So, I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Riva Del Garda as a holiday/vacation location. There are many other beautiful towns on the lake that are worth exploring. We took a couple of trips to Verona and Venice – yes, they were both long journeys for a relatively short time spent in these two fantastic cities. However, the bus journeys were interesting in themselves and were quite relaxing and, of course, it whetted the appetite for a future, longer visit. However, you might just want to give the Riva town Museum a miss. I encountered there probably the rudest individual (the Concierge?) I have ever met in a life-time of travel. Now folks to the main event. The Hotel Sole. Well, given some of the observations/comments here on Trip Advisor we had some concerns – especially regarding the food. All in all our ten day experience was very enjoyable. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the lake – this was truly the “icing on the cake”. The room certainly looked somewhat tired, the furniture quite old-fashioned and the bed and pillows rather hard (not the first time we have experienced this in Italy!). However, the room was comfortable enough. Alas, the bathroom had one of those awful “telephone” style showers in the bathtub that “Continentals” seem to love. How older people are expected to wash/shower using one of these is a complete mystery to me. A simple walk-in shower would be so much more sensible. Now to the food. First of all I can’t praise the Maître d’ enough. He was a very friendly and charming man who greeted us every morning and evening with a smile; a real professional of the old-school. I can’t truly say that all of his staff in the restaurant were as courteous. I recall one waitress actually arguing with a British customer as to the suitability of the food. Rather odd. The food itself was reasonably good if not a little predictable after ten days. A heavy reliance on veal and pork (to appeal to the large German clientele I presume?) seemed to be in order. Starters and desserts were excellent. We chose to sit out on the terrace overlooking Lake Garda which was absolutely lovely. Most of the “bus party” crowd including many Brits chose to sit inside. As has been mentioned in other reviews of Hotel Sole non-resident customers seemed to have a much greater choice of food from a menu not available to residents. We found this rather annoying. Also, dinner for residents finished at 8.30pm whereas non-residents could dine until the early hours. I suspect the management wanted to make “our” tables pay by opening up the resident’s tables to the public by “getting rid” of the residents early. So, defo not “Cordon Bleu” but not nearly as bad as has been painted by some here on Trip Advisor. In the end the sheer monotony of the daily “set menu” wore us down after a week or so and we dined out on a couple of occasions. I would thoroughly recommend the curiously named “Ristorante Al Vaticano” which is a short walk from the Hotel Sole. Great food and a great atmosphere served up by the very friendly Fava Bassetti family. Try it! Many posters here have referred to the “very friendly staff” at the Hotel Sole. Well, I’m sad to say they must have – with the exception of the Maître d’ – all been on holiday somewhere else in Italy. The girls behind the desk were pleasant enough as were our very helpful chambermaids. However, the management seemed to regard their guests as an annoying intrusion to the important task of sitting at Reception attending to their important “paper-work” while staring expressionless into computer screens. I recall one very amusing occasion when the “Director” and the Head Chef had the kind of stand-up row in the lobby that would not go amiss in a 1950’s Sophia Loren film. A smile or two would not go amiss. Please note that if you want to use the “Whirlpool”/Jacuzzi at Hotel Sole this might be something of a problem. Despite being featured on much of hotel literature at every opportunity it seems “unavailable” during the summer. We did get the key for the “Spa” from the front desk. We did attempt to discover how to turn the cold water hot. We did phone the desk and was informed by the girl that a “man would be sent up”. After waiting for nearly an hour we gave up. When we handed the key back at Reception we attempted to find out from the girl why no “man” had turned up. The rather sheepish looking girl was quickly interrupted by the “Director” and mumbled something curtly in Italian. What was said I can only guess? To end on a positive note the Hotel Sole has a perfect location in a very beautiful town and is only spoiled by some eccentricities and failure to attend to detail. I had lost an item - I suspect in my hotel room – and emailed the hotel last week to see if they could have a look for the lost item in my room. I’m still waiting for a reply. PS The cat was cool.

Room Tip: Splash out a make sure you have a room with a balcony overlooking Lake Garda. Chilling out on the ba...

My sister recently got married in Malcesine on Lake Garda. As we had the whole afternoon to entertain ourselves before the reception that evening, we chose to have a boat trip to Riva and booked Hotel Sole to have some afternoon drinks and food. I have to say the hotel were wonderful on the day and throughout the booking process prior to the wedding as we had some changes. They were so accommodating and the food and drinks went down a treat. Nothing was a problem for them and they couldn't have been nicer to the bride and groom. This definitely helped make it a special day for all of us. I would recommend Hotel Sole for any function such as a wedding. Thanks!
