“What Makes a Good Holiday?”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

What makes a good holiday? If it is destination, clean hotel and good food – then all of these things can be found at the Savoy Hotel in Riva. It is so close to the Lake and all its activities. It is run by friendly efficient staff. The views from the bedrooms include the lake and the towering mountains. The food is so varied every day it is a delight to read the menu! The Old Town and ferry port is a short walk away and Torbole is a pleasant stroll in the opposite direction and there is always the option of using the local bus service. This is a hotel which receives many repeat bookings and is also used by Riviera Travel as a base for visiting Venice, Verona and the Dolomites.which was spectacular.

We stayed in the Savoy Palace for two weeks as a family of six (four teenagers). We had three rooms which were all immaculately clean. We did not have a lake view but enjoyed the view of the mountains. The room was comfortable but the en-suite's shower was not very strong in any of the three rooms. Also, as a personal preference, I would have preferred one double bed rather than two single beds joined together only by a sheet. They were not very comfortable. We had requested all three rooms to be on the same floor which was provided.

We were booked under half board and all meals were delicious. Also, if none of the menu options were to your taste the kitchen was happy to provide you with something else. The buffet breakfast was delicious as was the lunch by the pool. Afternoon tea was an added bonus with unlimited homemade cakes, tea and coffee.

The staff were superb, very welcoming and friendly, particularly the waiting staff. At dinner you are served by the same waiter each night which helps you get to know them during your stay. A special mention has to go to our waiter, Emiliano, who was very friendly and attentive to all our needs.

The pool and the area surrounding it were very nice with plenty of sun loungers. Our teenagers enjoyed playing with the table tennis and billiards tables. However, the indoor pool and fitness room were a little dated. The free bike hire was great as there are brilliant cycling paths to nearby towns.

The owner, Mr Tonelli, is always around and is very involved in the hands-on running of the hotel.

Overall, a very enjoyable stay with lots to do for families.

I won't go into all the details of beautiful place, location, views, food and accommodation as you won't be disappointed. The only downside with the above would be the food....what was served was lovely but it all lacked an Italian cultural taste fare. Entertainment very old type, (our group between 45 to older gent 52 & a month & day) and each night between eleven & half we were constantly asked to be quiet...nine happy people but in no way boisterous we felt hard done by. Even tried to find a lively spot on Main Street but atmosphere dead...we made our own fun but it was disappointing. We. Totally enjoyed the happy service at our table and in the bar from Beneto, and Okey Dokey, they were amazing and really helpful at all times. Done tours, went out on bikes, climbed mountains and really enjoyed it all . Some beautiful quaint towns seen on tours and think I would like to experience the south of lake Garda like Salo & Simonez.....will defo go back ASAP

Just returned from a week here, highly enjoyable, theres a slightly negative point but first ill talk bout the many positives, good location, 3 mins walk to the lake, 20 mins into Riva centre. we were a large party of 9, 3 children and 6 adults. we had a family room 2 adults 2 children due to this we had a beautiful room with a vernanda with a view to die for, the other members of my party however, only had balconys overlooking the car park, so we were really lucky, the others rooms were delux this meant basically a power shower and kettle which we didn't have, family rooms don't come with kettles, when I asked a tray was provided though. personally I much preferred the more modern décor of the family room. The staff were excellent throughout, good room cleaning with fresh towels when needed, the room was always spotless, reception staff really helpful and the waiters were exellent despite being constantly rushed off their feet. It was nice to see the owner at every meal greeting and chatting to people, his wife could have cracked a smile though, she was around a lot but I didn't once see her interact with anyone.
The food was beautiful I could not fault it. every meal beautifully presented , fresh food and quality at all times, an absolute credit, lots of choice. the pool areas were lovely and clean with quality sunbeds that had a shade on to block sun from your face, you are provided with a towel each for use by the pool too.
The only niggle I have Is this was sold to us as all inclusive however it wasn't, it was full board, children could have unlimited soft drinks with ever meal but families WITH CHILDREN get 1/2 a caraf a meal the rest of the drinks you pay for. ( not coffee or breakfast drinks these were included ) my parents who had no children in their room didn't get any drinks with meals, apart from breakfast, despite being sold as full board. This wasn't clear to us, and on occasion we were charged for the free 1/2 caraf we were entitled to, they took it straight off when told though. This was the ONLY negative I have however it certainly didn't spoil anything and I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
I cant wait to return to Italy.

Room Tip: pool/bar area view or family room view for amazing views of the mountains

We stayed in the Savoy Palace, Riva Del Garda and had an enjoyable week. The resort of Riva itself is fantastic and we had a great time exploring the lake on the public boat and visiting the nearby town of Verona. The hotel itself was in a good location, in short walking distance from the lake and about a 15min walk from the town of Riva. It boasts both an outdoor and indoor swimming pool. We had some thundery/rainy days during our stay so the indoor pool came in handy. The bed in our room was huge and very comfortable, we both slept really well in this hotel
I am a vegetarian and felt that dishes on offer in the restaurant were quite limited. Quite often there was no veggie option on the evening menu and so I had to keep asking what I could have and honestly found the options a little boring.. omelettes, salads etc. This was a little frustrating as we had booked half board. There was entertainment in the hotel every night and was more geared towards an older audience, consisting mainly of a piano player, sometimes with a karaoke screen. There was an area for dancing if you wished to get up. The owner of the hotel Mr. Tonelli was very visible at all times, he seemed to be there from 8am until past 11pm. He circulated at dinner time and ensured that everybody was happy. Bringing his Ferrari into the grounds for 'Ferrari night' when he lets guests sit in it was a nice touch :) Afternoon tea is available in the bar between 4-5pm where you can help yourself to cakes, coffee, tea, juice etc. Be prepared to put on some weight in this hotel! Overall the Savoy Palace is a well maintained, well run hotel in a good location. However due to the older clientele and the limited veggie options, I am not sure that we would return if visiting Riva again.

Room Tip: Good views from the rooms at the front of the hotel

We stayed here in May for a week. We went with Great Railway Journeys and hadn't appreciated that that meant 'special meals' for the week, as a group, rather than eating from the normal menu. The first night the food was very good but it rather went steadily downhill from there. In fact, on the Wednesday the 'Italian' choice of meal was lamb (which I don't eat) and the 'English' alternative was a pork chop! We decided that we hadn't travelled to Italy to eat a pork chop, so we went out. We spoke to others, not staying as part of a tour and they said the food was excellent; certainly the menu looked superb.

That was the only disappointment, however. The hotel itself is spacious and and sumptuous; the staff is welcoming, helpful and attentive and the rooms (we had a room overlooking the lake) were extremely large. I did have a small issue with the shower, as the screen provided was not adequate for the water pressure if the shower was turned on fully. It was fine if the shower was only used at half power.

I would stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others - just don't go as part of a tour if you like your food and want to experience traditional, Italian meals.

Everything about the hotel is fabulous, the rooms, the food, the swimming pool and especially the staff who are a credit to themselves and the hotel. I would highly recommend it to any age group, especially families, and it includes everything is in the hotel that you could possibly want or need. 5 stars all round and will definitely be back.
