easily the best hotel in sauze.
the hotel is cheaper, but really is underselling itself.
the staff are very friendly and accommodating.
we went over new years 2013/2014 and had an amazing time.
the bar itself is the best in town, plays good music and serves lovely (free) nibbles.
noise wasnt an issue, very peaceful, and nice comfortable rooms.
would like to offer a big thankyou to all at the derby - you definitely made my ski holiday one to remember.

Room Tip: all are lovely

My partner and I and a small group stayed here for New Yr! Hotel Derby is in a fantastic spot with free shuttle buses right outside taking you to the chair lifts, you can take a 5 min walk if you'd rather but the streets a little steep carrying all your gear! We ended up renting a locker at the bottom of the chair lift it was approx 25€ for the week but well worth it!
Our rooms at the Derby were cleaned regularly, plenty of space 4 storage, other reviews I've read really do seem to be nit picking. Breakfast was more than enough 2 help us along our way on the slopes, cheese, ham, fresh bread rolls, juice, yogurts, toast& cereal all replenished through out the morning! Staff were happy4 us to take a ham roll away with us4 lunch if we wanted!
The bar was a lovely and cosy, with a lovely fire & corners2 snuggle up in after a tough day skiing. Drinks were discounted as we were staying there & nibbles of cheese, olives& chorizo were usually available on the bar & often brought over2 our table as an added bonus! With regards 2 noise, we expected it 2 be a little loud as we were in the middle of town& a really convenient location but it really wasn't that bad& we slept fine!& after a day on the slopes your exhausted anyway so getting to sleep didn't take long. On arrival to the Derby we were welcomed with sparkling wine& yummy cake& nibbles another added bonus!
Staff were extremely friendly& couldn't do enough2 help u throughout your stay! With their years of local knowledge they pretty much knew everything u needed2 know about the slopes, buses& the best restaurants! The Neilson rep, Ben was often around the hotel popping in on us in the evenings& at breakie!
while we were in Sauze my partner& I got engaged! The staff& reps recommended & booked a restaurant where my other half asked me, they were genuinely pleased& congraulated us, the next evening we came home to a bottle of champagne to congratulate us which was a lovely touch! We honestly had such a great time and the hard working staff@ the derby made it even more special! Thank you Derby staff we had a fantastic holiday!!! :-) Marie& Mark the soon to be Kehoes x

Stayed at the Hotel Derby over Christmas 2013. On arrival we were greeted by one the new owners Amanda. A very warm welcome after a few hours travelling was well needed, and provided in abundance.

Hotel bar downstairs was a great hub for locals and apres-skiers alike. All the staff at the hotel, from Frankie and Amanda, to Corinn and Nick who provide bar and breakfast shifts were absolutely amazing and very knowledgable of the local area and ski conditions.

Free busses to the ski lifts stop almost directly outside the hotel, with a short bus ride to the 2 main ski lifts.

If you are on a bit of a budget, I could not recommend a better place to stay. Added to that the effort that everyone goes to to make your stay comfortable you could not do better in my opinion. Sauze d'oulx and the Derby Hotel will definitely be my yearly Christmas bolt-hole on a regular basis, and I am also planning another trip there before the end of this season.

A big well done to all the guys there and see you soon.

Steve Britnell.

Rustic style room and very basic facilities. Shower eventually gets hot after running for 3-4 minutes. Noise travels very easily inside hotel with it having no carpets. Local night clubs make a lot of noise that lasts until the early hours resulting in disturbed sleep. Nice basic breakfast provided.

Stayed in room15 for 1 week at the end of February 2013. In was a little surprised by how basic it was on first impression. We were at the top of the hotel, so the noise from the bar you could hear but was not a problem for us as after a day of skiing we usually came back tired. No TV or bath, but a nice break feast in the morning, juice, tea, coffee, toast, cereal etc and served by a very cheerful lady.

Hotel is opposite the bus stop, either the blue or green line will take you to both the lifts which you could walk but not with your gear.

Altogether A good base at a low cost, the resort is good and has some great runs with an excellent ski school

We stayed in this hotel February 2013 for a ski holiday with Nielsen and had rooms 14 and 15.

Room 15 was fine, it was spacious, twin beds fairly comfortable, had a nice hot shower but a bit scruffy round the edges as you would expect from a budget hotel. Our friends had Room 14 which was completely different!! 14 was ALOT smaller/cramped and the beds were uncomfortable (they described it as a park bench). So a bit of of a lottery for what room you get!
There was also housekeeping each day which was a bonus.

If you are a light sleeper, don't stay here! The hotel is extremely noisy throughout the night due to its central location. it didn't bother me personally, but others in the group found it hard to sleep. Its perfect for a group that will be enjoying the nightlife.

Breakfast was good for a budget hotel, we got there first thing most mornings and there was plenty of cereal, yoghurts, fruit, ham, cheese and toast with butter/jam.

There is a ski store, but not locked so if you have your own skis and want to make sure they are safe we needed to carry them up three flights of stairs to our rooms which was a bit of a pain.

The ski bus stop is right outside. In contrary to the last review we didn't have to wait long at all at the first lifts, but again we got up there early (9.30am approx.)

Overall, the hotel is what you expect - you get what you pay for. I didn't think this hotel was any different to other basic ski accommodation - if this is what you are used too and don't mind noise I would recommend it.

My wife and I booked a New Year Ski holiday with Neilsen. Hotel Derby is in one of the two big squares in the centre of Sauze and is above two busy bars and very near to several others. The hotel itself and the rooms fitted the description we had read - basic, clean and comfortable; the shower was bit temperamental but it usually provided enough hot water for a decent wash down. For several days breakfast seemed pretty good until the rolls and the muesli ran out - in effect breakfast was on a first come, first served basis and we were dissapointed that we could not get a cup of real coffee (it is Italy after all!) from the breakfast bar. We were advised that we could get a cup of tea on our final morning before we set of home but this turned out not to be possible. The main difficulty with the hotel was the constant and incessant noise outside. We could not claim to be in the 18-30 category and we can cope with a couple of very late boozy nights, but over the New Year Week the din outside the hotel was extremely loud and persistent, pretty much every night. The windows are not double glazed so the shrieking, chanting and singing along with the constant thud of fireworks and drums being played came almost undiluted into our room. If you are out every night until 4am in the morning this of course would not bother you.....on several nights we had to go to bed at 8pm knowing we would be woken at about midnight and then lie awake until 4am when we could go back to sleep (and get ready to rush for breakfast!) It became like torture and we realised we had made a big mistake booking the hotel as it was so central and also porous to noise. Maybe its only a big issue for some of the rooms in the Hotel; maybe its only an issue at New Year.

In respect of the skiing, Sauze d 'Oulx is not ideal for beginners looking to progress without the help of paid instruction. There is only a small number of easily accessible blue slopes, and these are very narrow (in contrast to the resorts in Andorra or the States). The other big issue with Sauze is that one of the main access points to the high mountains - and therefore other areas of the Milky Way - are only accessible though the Sportinia chairlift; the queues here usually required a 15- 20 mins wait - a really significant bottleneck that could take a couple of hours out of a days skiing on that mountain.
.

Room Tip: Get one away from the front of the hotel if you are a light sleeper
