“A warm welcome awaits you”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying at the Grand Hotel Besson between 5th-12th January, we had such a fabulous experience we are hoping to return for the same week next year work commitments permitting.

Rooms

Firsty if you have never stayed in a ski resort before there are a couple of things you should know that is applicable to all ski hotels wherever you go - the rooms are generally quite small and they are very warm.

We stayed in room 105 and although it was compact there was enough room to do everything we needed sleep, shower, relax, store all of our gear and get ready. You don't generally spend a great deal of time in your room so I don't know why you would want anymore room. We had two radiators - one in the bedroom and another tall towel rail style in the bathroom. These are essential for drying off your ski gear at the end of the day and if you find the room to hot then simply turn them down or off. The bedroom area is all cosy wood panelling and the bathroom tiled floor to ceiling. Everything is spotlessly clean. There is also a free safety deposit box in the room however I must say we regularly accidentally left things such as ipods, phones and tablets laying around and didn't experience a problem. Although we didn't have an individual balcony we did have full length patio door which opened out on to a roof top where you could step out and enjoy the stunning mountain views.

Staff

The thing that really makes this hotel so special is the staff, they are utterly professional and efficient......nothing is to much trouble and they appear to genuinely want you to enjoy their hospitality and are happy to serve you - something that is certainly lacking in many other hotels around the world.

As two weeks have passed I can't recall everyones names however in particular the restaurant manager Pasquale needs a mention, he was first class and his attention to detail was very much appreciated especially on the evening that our friends who were staying at another hotel joined us for dinner. We were all made to feel very special. Next for a special mention has to be Tina (her full name is something far more Italian) was our main waitress, she was a joy to see at any time of day or night, she is very enthusiastic and always happy. There were two other male waiters, service from them was equally excellent.. The reception staff and housekeeeping were all also friendly, helpful and smiling. We never had the pleasure of meeting the chef's and kitchen staff however I will move on to the excellent food they produced next.

Food

Our package included breakfast and evening meal, we did plan to only eat in the hotel a few nights so we could go out and try some of the local restaurants however the food was of such an excellent standard we never felt the need to go anywhere else.

Breakfast is a buffet of juices, fresh and tinned fruits, yogurts, cereals, cakes, hot fresh pastries including croissants, pain au chocolat, pain au raisin, fresh bread rolls, cheeses, meats, hot bacon, scrambled and boiled eggs, muchrooms, tomatoes and toast. The staff serve tea and the most delicious coffee (including decaffinated) to the table.

Dinner is an authentic Italian experience with different options and freshly made breads served every evening.

It begins with a full basket of bread followed by buffet of salad including delicious hot and cold starters. The menu consists of a choice of four starters usually a soup and three pasta dishes and a choice of four main courses usually including a fish dish, two meat options and a vegetarian option. Dessert (if you have any room left) is again buffet style with classic homemade Italian desserts and fresh fruits.

Wine is very reasonably priced and of an excellent standard.

Bar

The bar area consits of a big comfortable lounge area with a real log fire and a number of big cosy leather Chesterfield style sofas complete with gorgeous cushions and blankets. The bar is serviced by the ever cheerful Joshua, what an absolute character - he is always interested in your day and is like a big friendly uncle. The bar is competively priced for a hotel bar and the hospitality and conveinence is worth that little bit extra.

Shuttle bus

Tonto the driver has the bus ready and running from about 830am in the morning, it's only about a ten minute round trip to the lift and back so you're never waiting for long. After a full day on the slopes we would be met at Sportina by Tonto, he literally drops you at the door of the boot room which is situated underneath the hotel. There is a large radiator next to the boot rack so make sure you put your boots as close as possible and also try to remember to shut the door after you to keep the warm in as this will help everyone's boots dry out.

Spa

The fact that the Spa was included in our package was the icing on the cake, after a full day on the slopes it was absolute luxury to be able to walk through the underground tunnel from the hotel through to the Spa. Our first day was the 12th night which is the last day of the Italian Christmas celebrations which meant the Spa was busy however even when full to capacity there was plenty of room to relax and unwind. The rest of the week was very quiet and the majority of the time we had our chosen areas to ourselves. A special thank you to the lovely Chiara who will ensure you know where everything is and how to use everything. Also thanks to Fatma and Mehdi.

All in all we had an excellent time at the Grand Hotel Besson and we will certainly be back again. Keep up the good work!!

We was there in december. The hotel with the most ameneties in the area but with some disadvantages:
1. Very small rooms. I have never seen smaller ones in ski hotels. Then you open the door to the toilet you can't open the door of the wardrobe.
2. Strange heating system. Works like it wants.
3. Unreal amount of sault in the food, drinks in the restaraunt may come in time, may after the third ask.
4. No heating equipment in the room for ski boots.
5. SPA is very old and the way to spa from the hotel is by the cold corridor. Everything in spa is old, partly broken. SPA is available for everybody, not only for hotel guests. As a result - no places in the swimming pool and sauna. Pool with salted water often closed for private massage.
6. Hotel bar - like in 80's.
7. Everithing in the hotel looks like very old.
8. No blankets, just covers.

General feeling - not bed but highly overpriced.

And few words about resort. All montains in sauze d'oulx very inconvinient. A lot of climbing up between parking, rent and lift, often 200-300 meters.

Room Tip: choose another hotel

we have just got back from a week at this lovely hotel. It must rank on my all time list of friendliest happiest hotels I have ever stayed. arriving late we were offered a hot meal
after the kitchen had supposedly closed. the bar man signor josue is the best barman I have ever
had the pleasure to have serve me , with a twinkle in his eye , a delightful dry sense of humour and a love of the hotel gossip, both guests and fellow staff, always tipping his nose confidentially with his finger. the waiting staff outstandingly attentive. the food very good. the chambermaids very good - clean pillow cases every morning !! really its a wonderful friendly place which reflects very well on the ownership and management. the walk to the lifts is not so good, but the bus is very frequent and driver very helpful (he spent 1 hour trying to help me put snowchains on and digging me out of the snow !)

I was here with Bianca's ski club group in March 2013. This hotel was a very short walk to town which gave us the advantage of quiet sleep. My shared lower floor room was quite tight with almost no storage. The only effective way to cool the very hot room was to keep the terrace door open - but so little time was spent in the room so it was manageable. The lobby was very comfortable with large leather sofas - it was also the only place you could get an internet connection which went in and out. Meals were adequate with the pasta courses being the best, also very delicious breads. It seems in the mountains that fish is not where the kitchen shines. What sets this place apart is the extremely friendly and helpful staff - they made you feel like family. The spa with various pools and steam areas was excellent - only wish operational hours for it were more conducive to evening and apres ski use. Pay a little extra for a larger uper floor room. From here it was a short walk to the transportation hub where we caught a bus to Oulx and from there you couod connect to trains. We took a day trip to Turin from here which was very manageable and a nice diversion.

Room Tip: The first floor rooms were very small and hot - request an upper floor larger room and tip to get it...

The spa of this hotel was excellent! They were very welcoming and everything was cosy. It was really an ideal place for relaxing after quite some skiing. We had massages and face treatments which were all done by two of the nicest people of the hotel. If you want to unstress and sit back five minutes in a longchair, there's the possibility to drink a 'tisane' or even a good glass of prosecco. You can jump in the hot tub, traditionally located outside next to the snow. There are two pools, one salted where you can hear lusic under water and the central pool with waterjets. And if it's not enough, you have a nice hot sauna and steaming eucalyptus hammam to try out. Since we were there to relax we didn't enjoy the fitness room, but it seemed well-equipped for a good work-out.
See you next year!

We had read that many hotels in Sauze d'Oulx were affected by noise from revellers in the town centre. The Grand Hotel Besson was pleasntly quiet apart from one nighht when a crowd from a Birmingham companhy arrived. The hotel immediately cracked down on them and order was restored. Despite being on the fringes of the town it was still easy to walk to restaurants in the town for dinner. We had one dinner inthe hotel and found it very expensive. If you're planning to ski in Sauze - stay here.
A tip for skiers - don't attempt to ski over the top and all the way down to Sestriere. You end up in the back streets with a long, long walk. Ski halfway down and catch the bubble car from the halfway station which links with other lifts in Sestriere.

We came across this hotel online & decided to head straight there. We discovered that the room rate was 3x times the price so we went back outside to our car, booked online, went for lunch & came back to the hotel for our cheaper rate, much to the staffs amusement! Rooms were fine, small but typical ski resort. Breakfast was good, lots to choose from, Spa was fabulous, finish skiin a little earlier & you've the place to yourself! Staff very friendly too.
