“Great value and a”
Reviewed 4 March 2013

Four of us stayed at the Hotel Edelweiss at the end of February 2013. Bruno, the owner, Luca, his bar manager and the rest of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble. The hotel is either a 20 minute walk up the hill to the town of Sauze D'Oulx or a shorter 10 minute walk up a steeper hill, but Bruno was always on hand to take us up in the evenings for no charge.

We ate out a couple of times as a treat (including a birthday), but other than that, the food was fine. Soups or pasta for starters, usually a meat and veg/potato main and fruit/ice cream/profiterols for pudding.

The bar and seating area was lovely. Always a roaring log fire and guests were respectful that each party got a turn on the sofas each night, with the others mixing if they wished at the tables. Bar snacks - crisps and mini pizza bites on hand from Apres Ski until dinner.

Rooms were fine, nothing extravagant but do ask for a double room or balcony if you wish, as these are limited. The shower was lovely and hot! We stayed above the bar but were never affected by any noise. Apparently it can be noisy if you are on the floor next to the bar, or downstairs on the way to the boot room.

The ski in and ski out is more than ideal. The slope is about 20 meters from the hotel for ski in, and to ski out, you ski down the hill about 100 metres to the Jovenceaux lift - which you can take down in the evenings if you are too tired to ski down from the mountain!

A superb little hotel and a great location - so not be put off that it is not in the town of Sauze - this is far nicer, unless you want to ne out on the town every night. We are hoping to return for Xmas this year, we were so impressed.

Room Tip: Second or third floor - ask for a balcony or double if you want, but these are extra.

We booked Edelweiss as a low cost half board option and apart from the room, which was small but with a great view and balcony, everything was excellent and much better than can reasonably be expected for the price. All the good points mentioned by other reviewers are spot on, it is an easy ski out, slightly awkward ski in or a 3-5 minute walk to the lift taking you to the centre of the Sportina area so a great place to stay for active skiers. The bar and restaurant area is very welcoming with a roaring fire and comfortable settees. It was very easy to meet and socialise with the other guests. It is a family run hotel and everybody went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable. The food was typical Italian mountain food, a lot of ham, cheese and pasta with some good meat dishes on some nights. Bruno's wife runs the kitchen and they have taken on board the request for more fruit and vegetables but not quite in the way we expect with mountainous fruit and salad bowls appearing for one night each.
The room had all the essentials and never ran out of hot water, though we had the lower grade room it was more than adequate .
Sauze is walkable especially back down the hill but Bruno will take you into town from 5.30pm. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to all but the most dedicated party goers or gastronomes, for an excellent value stay.

Room Tip: A balcony gives excellent views and there are different classes of room

We have just arrived home from the Hotel Edelweiss and we had a fantastic stay there. We were in a family group of 20 and it was perfect for all our needs. Plenty of seating areas to relax in the evenings. The staff were very helpful and Bruno regularly gave us all a lift in to Sauze on an evening. The Hotel was warm and inviting. The bar area was warm with a real fire burning each day. It was spotlessly clean and we found the food to be plentiful. The ski lift is at the end of the garden although it is a steep climb down for non skiiers each day. There was a lovely veranda to sit outside each day and the weather was perfect. I would certainly consider returning next year and recommending to family and friends.

Room Tip: Try to choose a room at the front of the hotel as the views ae magnificent.

We were lucky, the snow was great and it was simple to ski down to the lift which never had a queue. The hotel was spotlessly clean, warm verging on hot with lashings of hot water. All the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. A good walk up hill into town but usually someone will give you a lift.
Now onto the food, it could be so much better. Breakfast was not too bad but some fresh bread please not rock hard rolls from the freezer. Dinner- starters, especially the soup, was nice, shame about the rolls again. Main course a big let down, hardly a portion and usually from the freezer with mixed temperatures on the same plate. Vegetarians prepare yourselves for pea or courgette omelette or tomato slices and cheese. Sometimes you get a vegetable with your meal but no always. Take some extra euro with you for a decent meal or three out in town.

Room Tip: 3 adults in a room is more than friendly

I stayed at this hotel years ago, Bruno owned it back then and Luca worked the bar, sounds like nothing much has changed. I found it a lovely clean hotel with very friendly and helpful staff which is lovely, would love to revisit sometime .. and the couple of times we stayed you could ski down to the chair lift as we had fresh falls of snow each time, on occassions we did cheat and ski into Sauze itself, had a few beers and then got a taxi back to save our legs from the trek from the lift to the hotel on the way home ...

Room Tip: balcony a necessity.

First of all I have to say, from my experience, I do not understand some of the negative comments in some of the earlier reviews for this hotel. My Family group, 6 couples, found it to be one of our best skiing hotel stays ever, and we’ve stayed in quite a few. Yes the bedrooms aren’t the biggest, but we had a large comfortable bed, enough storage for our clothes and cases, and a lovely size bathroom, what more do you need? The rooms were kept clean and the ‘maid’ even folded and tidied up some of our things. Breakfast was continental as you would expect in a European hotel. There was always plenty of Ham, Cheese, Eggs, Croissants, Bread, Cakes, drinks and preserves available. There was a choice of Evening meal, made the night before to prevent wastage – good idea. The food was simple and tasty and there was plenty of it. We never came out of the dining room feeling we needed something more, totally the opposite and we could not manage desert every night. The hotel was nice and quiet so you do get a good nights sleep, …..well at least until about 7:30am when the local dogs decide it’s waking up time.
The staff were excellent, there was always someone in the reception area willing to help in any way they could.
The hotel is a short distance away from the centre of Sauze, but it was a steep climb and not something that was welcome after a hard day skiing. The owner, Bruno, would offer to take you in his car up to the town. All part of the service. One evening 6 of us were queuing at the ski bus stop to go up to the town and Bruno spotted us as he was driving in the opposite direction. He stopped, did a U turned and gave us a lift up to town, it was obviously out of his way, but he was happy to do that and would not accept any payment. Brilliant!. Another night there were many people wanting to go up to town so he just drove back and forth until all of us were transported up to town.
On New Years eve we went up to the town after dinner in order to celebrate the New Year but we found that the bars weren’t as lively as when we had been a few years previously. Outside, the locals set off big fire works in the street so it can be a little bit dangerous (Not sure what our H&S Exec would make of this) so we decided to go back to the hotel. Apart from us and the hotel staff, the hotel was empty. They had invited some of their friends around to celebrate the New Year, so we felt we may have been gate crashing their party, but they made us feel very welcome and we all joined in with the celebrations and a god time was had by all.
Overall, we though that the hotel was ideal, it claims to be ski-in ski-out and it certainly was for us, but I can imagine it would be one of the first to loose that facility as the snow line recedes.
