“Clean, friendly hotel with fantastic food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2013

Hotel Papa is an extremely clean and cared for hotel. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The hotel is located across from the bus station to Bergamo and is near pizzerias, shops, and the major sites of San Pellegrino. The restaurant is excellent--make sure you eat multiple meals there. The proprietor is especially welcoming and willing to please.

Rooms vary in size, and a few have very small showers. All are clean, well kept and have very good WiFi. The owners Giorgio and his wife are very helpful and Giorgio speaks very good english. My verizon cell service is iffy, but yrmv. The restaurant and bar are are simple and very well done, food is very good. If you want a homespun vibe for your hotel...this is it.

Room Tip: Be specific with the owners about what you really need, i.e. two beds, single traveler, etc.

Rooms have little charm, but friendly family staff make up the difference. Super cheap (45 euros) and decent internet. A short walk from the heart of San Pellegrino. 7/10

The Papa hotel cost us 60 Euros for a double room. It was value for money and the manager/owner was a fantastic help. In a region where English is not commonly spoken, this guy was an enormous help with directions as well as just being a genuinely nice guy. San Pellegrino (famous for its water in UK Italian restaurants) was a lovely place with a free flowing river as its centrepiece. For us, we came out of Bergamo airport at night and took nearly 2 hrs to find San Pellegrino so better done in daytime. Going cross country to Lovere on Lake Iseo was a terrific experience and some scenery which is breathtaking.

I stayed here with a friend for a few days cycling / training. The staff were very friendly and helpful. A number spoke reasonable English and made us feel very at home. We were offered the use of an empty shop next door to assemble and store our bikes. The rooms are very basic but also clean and perfectly comfortable. We thought that the resturant was well really very good - authentic Italian cooking. Also a great choice of good wine. The hotel has a small friendly bar that is frequented by locals.
The town of San Pelligrino has a few nice shops, bars and resturants.
There are a number of dedicated paved cycle paths that follow an old railway line up the river. Well worth exploring. We found a brochure about the routes in reception.
We also did a big (160km) ride up a narrow gorge to 1250m, down to Lake Como (250m) and then back over Passo San Marco (1995m). Spectacular scenery. The hotel manager offered us a printed route but we would recommend that you also buy a map from the kiosk opposite the hotel. Beware of heavy traffic on the roads around Lake Como. 3250m of climbing in total. Dinner never tasted so good.

  • Liked — Good value, clean, good resturant
  • Disliked — Fairly basic rooms

We arrived at Hotel Papa at 23:30 on the Fri night. We were very hungry, but as it was so late we asked when we were checking in if there was anywhere open to get food. The owner didn't speak a word of English, so she phoned her husband who did speak English. He told us to go up the road to a pizzaria, but when we got there it was shut, then the chef ran out and asked if we were from the Hotel Papa and told us to come in, he opened up the restaurant and made us a meal........what service!!!! And as for the food, it was delicious! So as far as first impressions go, we were delighted with our choice of hotel. Ask about the restaurant on the other side of the river.....I recommend it.

The hotel room was basic, but clean and had everything we needed.....the shower is very powerful, excellent after a days skiing.

The location of the hotel is perfect for skiing and it was on the road up to the resort we had chosen, plus the town is lovely, plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance, and the hotel is on the side of a river which is nice too.

The hotel restaurant is lovely too, breakfast is simple but plentiful. The evening meals are all home cooked and very very tasty (reasonable prices too)

All in all, it is a wonderful little hotel in a lovely little spa town, although the spa is only open from May till September, but it definately sounds like it is worth a visit.

  • Liked — Friendlyness of the staff and the location
  • Disliked — Nothing to dislike at all
