Nyala Suite Hotel San Remo
Ranked #33 of 43 Hotels in Sanremo
Reviewed 29 July 2014

The signs pointing to the Nyala all say that it is a 4 star hotel. This may have been the case when it was the built in the 60s, but no more. The hotel is very hard to find, and when we tried to phone to get instructions we got an Italian-only speaker who hung up on us. We eventually found it, and were told by a horribly disinterested member of staff when breakfast was and where it was, as they showed us to our "junior suite". After being bemused by the creaky lift where none of the lights worked, and the hideous 60s carpet, we found the "junior suite" consisted of a tiny room holding a divan and a cupboard (containing a miniscule fridge), a bathroom and a bedroom with a flat screen TV where none of the channels worked, and the saving grace - a HUGE terrace with a magnificent view of the Mediterranean and San Remo (but furnished with only tired plastic patio furniture).
We were also not told:
- there is a Friday night buffet, but we were not told you have to book, so we weren't allowed in for that , we went into town instead
- we asked that night if we could use the advertised casino shuttle, but it wasn't available
- we weren't told about the private beach, or when the shuttle was available
- we had to ask Miss Disinterested where the pool was, she begrudgingly took us down two lifts then informed us it closed at 6pm anyway (pathetic)
- the hotel guide only tells you about everything you shouldn't do, and what you'll get fined for

The buffet breakfast while extensive is awful, the coffee is undrinkable, the scrambled eggs (which should only be eggs, salt and pepper) are very strange tasting, and they constantly were running out of plates and juice.

We really felt like we arrived, were given a key, and farewelled 2 days later. Service non-existent, the accommodation is tired, it is a fair way out of town, go somewhere else

Room Tip: Get a room with a view, it may help you to ignore how rubbish the room is

This summer we booked one night in this hotel to break up our drive to Spain. As we arrived we had to hurry as the restaurant was closing already. My husband quickly got our suitcases up to the room and as the airco didn't work had to change rooms straight away. So finally we were looking forward to a nice meal. We didn't wanted to get the buffet as we weren't that hungry and it was quite pricy. The waiters were not happy about that at all, not to say extremely grumpy and we had to wait about 20 minutes until finally we could convince them to get just one course. Our food (delicious crab pasta) was just taken off the buffet. So why the fuss? The kids ordered homemade chicken nuggets what took another 30 minutes. Needless to say we were chocked when we saw the first ones they put in their mouth were raw! The waiters did not know what to do with it and didn't see the problem. It was so frustrating. Eventually they ate the few ones that were good and we took the rest of the plate to the reception desk. We tried to talk to the chef first but as we weren't allowed we had no other choice. Luckily there was one senior person who realized the severity of the situation. We didn't have to pay the meal but paid for all the rest. We tried to make the best of the rest of the evening in this very old fashioned hotel but even now, 6 months later I feel upset about how bad this evening was.

Location is a bit out of the way, but the hotel taxi / shuttle service downtown or to the beach is very handy and we used it every day. Breakfast was good, but if you didn't get there early choice was more limited. The rooms were very clean throughout the stay, and the hotel pool was well maintained and a good size. Overall rating and price point are about right. Parking is a bit of an adventure !

Like in the title, this venue remembers the last century very well; in a sense it's very sovietic, with strange corridors and decoration. The room we had was recently redecorated but the shower was v small ans its door was not closing. Strangely enough the pool closes at 18h30, which in summer is rather irritating if you arrive around 18h00. And the hotel is quite far from the city centre, which itself is not worth seeing unfortunately too. So my tip would rather be a hotel in a nearby Bordighera, where we went for dinner; rather than San Remo.

stayed here for 3 nights of a group tour. Rooms were large, with a separate sitting room. Our room had a nice balcony with a view of water but lower floors dont. Breakfast was good with many options. Front desk staff was very eager to help while the waiters were a little less professional. hotel is in a relatively remote location up the hill. downtown is walkable and most of it is along a very pretty waterfront promenade that frequently hosts craft markets.

I booked this hotel directly some months ago for a stay in August 2012. Firstly when booking I requested a parking space, this was important to me. The night before we were due to arrive a receive an email saying they could not guarantee this. We arrived at 11am and were told the room would not be ready until 2pm, Fair enough. So we then decided to walk to the town to have lunch. The hotel is at least 1.5 miles from the centre or any decent restuarants, so a taxi is neccessary, €10 each way. We arrived back at 2pm to be told now its 3pm. Eventually we get our room, a "Superior Junior Suite". This is a joke, two pokey little annex rooms with old, dirty decor. From the balcony we could see the awning below which was covied in rubbish & cigarette ends. We then decided to lay by the pool and have a drink. Could get any loungers by the pool, nowhere near enough, but did find a couple away from the pool. The whole area was dirty & covered in cigarette ends. I ordered a bottle of water at the bar and tried to take it to our loungers. "No Sir you cannot take drinks with you, you have to have them at the bar area only". When I complained to the manageress I was told to leave the hotel. Unfortunately I could find no room elsewhere so we had to stay for 2 nights.
I have never ever been to a place like this. A very unpleasant experience & one to be avoided. I am now taking my complaint to the owners.

Room Tip: Book into another hotel
