“5* luxury”
Reviewed 25 August 2008

We wanted to stay in San Remo so choose the Royal Hotel as it had a pool, gardens and was convient to the town. This is a very luxurious hotel as we usually stay in 4*. It had every thing. The pool area was lovely but strictly policed by pool attendants and you felt you were being watched! Unfortunately the dinners were very expensive so we ate out every night. The breakfast was amazing and was served outside or in. What a choice! Our only reservation was the price. This was 5* luxury for those who can afford it we tried it but would probably not spend this much again as there were other good hotels in San Remo but unfortunately none of the UK travel agents seem to promote them. It was lovely but at a price!! We hired a car and drove to some fantastic mountain villages. San Remo is a bustling town with good shops.

Having stayed at a number of 5 star hotels in Asia in previous years we were extremely disappointed about the standard of what was supposed to be a 5 star hotel. The hotel had been asked in advance to upgrade our room which we were prepared to pay extra for, however the dour concierge was unprepared to be helpful and told us that no seaview rooms were available as the hotel was fully booked. This was suprising as throughout our stay the hotel was practically empty.

Our room was fairly spacious but very dark and the decor dated. The bathroom was probably the best feature of the room and the much needed air conditioning was very old and noisy.

The first night we arrived was our anniversary so we decided to eat in the Giardina restaurant. The setting was lovely overlooking the sea however the service was over the top with waiters flapping around at every opportunity. The food was very mediocre and extremely expensive.
... we paid 170 euro for two courses and a bottle of wine.

The pool area was again very dated and in places the pool was in need of repair. The area overlooking the sea initially seemed an ideal place to lie however we soon realised why no one was there because a very busy road was just below and which had a constant flow of traffic throughout the day. The pool restaurant was again very over the top in terms of service and very expensive.

The bar area was very spacious but was empty most of the time and drinks were very expensive...15 euro for a gin and tonic. Every evening a singer and piano player were playing very old fashioned caberet style numbers which was quite irritating. This was a shame as sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the sea was one of the few enjoyable aspects of the hotel.

Fortunately we were able to find some good restaurants in the town which was a short walk although as some other travellers also commented the town itself was a bit shabby and down at heel. We had looked forward to coming to Italy very much however the experience of this hotel will make us think again about coming back for a very long time.

Family of 4 from Platt, Kent, England had a wonderful week in July/August 2008 in this luxury hotel. The hotel is tastefully decorated. Our children aged 8 & 5 years old, lived in the swimming pool. EVERY member of staff made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The seaview junior suite was comfortable for four of us. So it's expensive but it is Italy and that's what you pay for and worth it. The Smile Club is open from 7.30pm until 11.00 pm (not open during the day) but great to feed the children first then take them into the club whilst the adults can enjoy the superb cuisine/wine of the two restaurants. We booked through Citalia who specialise in Italian holidays whom we highly recommend.

We lived in hotel during 2 week and it was great! Everithing was perfect especially swiming pool. We coulden't fish up our children!
One thing what I recommend to management - diversify breakfast because in my opinion it was poor.
But staff was really kind, all our wishes were satisfied.

In a way it`s a bit of a travel in time - back 30 years when Grand Hotels were really grand ... . Now as other reviewers rightly mentioned tha place is dated at some ends (the outdoor pool is a classic 60 -ties movie set - you could picture Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly there .. - the parasols should be "Listed"...) but then again - it`s nice and it had and still has a nice laid back feeling...

We stayed at the top floor in one of their junior suites which was brilliant - full stop ! - huge terrace - huge bedroom - cool bathroom - fantastic bed - so this is 5 * by all means.. I had a look in on of their standard rooms on floor 2 and they do need some renovation but floor 4 was Ok as well... .

We did go to their restaurant one evening - food was good not superb - but here comes the other feature of this place - Staf and service are superb - they take pride in what they are doing - working in a "grand" Hotel - they do perform to that.. Not with a stiff eyebrow but aiming to be pleasant and helpfull .. with a "italian" smile as well...

Breakfast is a bliss - everything there - and what is`nt you just ask for (had loveley eggs benedict once...) - fresh OJ (which seems to be so rare nowadays..) - nothing could be too much trouble for them ... .

Concierge very helpfull - with a laugh ... - even though it was the Monaco weekend with lots of F1 "wanna be`s " around ....

Only downside i guess would be that San remo is - very dated .. - nothing else then just the Royal holding up the flag of former glory of the place - lots of Rif-Raf (but again maybe for the F1 ..) - but the city itself needs to get a facelift quick ...

So .. would we go again - most certainly if in the area - not for a week though but for a long weekend absolutly - Well done Royal !

Our four days at the Royal Hotel San Remo in September 2005 were amazing - - the perfect end to a perfect honeymoon! Friends had suggested we stop there and we were glad we did!

After exploring Paris, the South of France and Monaco we were thrilled to arrive in San Remo and relax! With most of our sightseeing out of the way we were able to enjoy the hotel property, which included a beautiful room and balcony as well as a fantastic pool and lounge area.

From our room we had the most magnificent view of the ocean. Most nights before dinner we’d sit outside on our balcony and have a glass of wine - - watching the wave crash in. The hotel was located up on a hill so the views from the balcony were beautiful.

We spent most of our time in San Remo lying by the pool at the hotel and exploring the beach, which was just across the road.

Service at the hotel was fantastic and the meals we had there were excellent. Our breakfast was included and we were able to enjoy this either inside or outside on the beautiful gardens.

On the weekend there were local markets within walking distance as well as other shops. The staff was very helpful in suggesting places for dinner and offering directions.

It was the most wonderful way to end our holiday!
