Due to work i find myself quite often in Sanremo, and like to relax when possible and this is the perfect hotel to do so.

Boasting 16000mq area with tennis courts, football pitches and even somewhere to roller skate (all hidden away) this hotel has a beautiful salt water pool over looking the sea (or a little beach on the front) along with a truly lovely relaxing basement spa.

The building is very well looked after and very clean, the staff are very helpful, nice and provide very good service without being intrusive.

The Room
We upgraded our room to a sea view on the third floor, it was very spacious and airy, large double doors opened onto a balcony which looked over the pool and out to sea. The bathroom was very clean and fresh offering a bathtub with overhead shower as for the bed, typically in this part of the world it was 2 double beds pushed together (this is always irritating) but the mattresses they have on these beds are fantastic (i suffer from sciatica so the bed is very important) We both had a perfect nights sleep followed with room service breakfast which was delicious.

The Restaurant
We reserved a table on the terrace which was beautiful location and classically laid out, the waiting staff were dressed exceptionally smart with bow ties and cumber bands and It was very easy to get there attention and they were very polite and spoke good English.
The food was very very good and so it should be for the prices they charge, I asked to have a wine recommended for me to go with my meal and the waiter fetched the sommelier who read me like a book and it was perfect.

The Spa
The spa is a very calming place (as it should be) in the basement, here it has massage and therapy rooms and access to there relaxation area which has a large custom built bubble pool, large steam room and sauner, it also has a shower room with different styles of heads (such as waterfall and rain). The spa pool needs to have a few tiles replaced and there are water stains on the walls (some simple fixes are necessary) but all in all it was very relaxing which did the job.

Overall
I see from other reviews that some of the rooms are not up to the standard of a 5 * hotel, In my experience and what i saw of this hotel it does deserve the 5 * for both looks, staff and food i was never made to feel unwelcome (even though i arrived very scruffy) and they were nothing but helpful and nice, it is a little pricey but worth it, i am a fussy person and the only thing i picked up on here was a couple of things in the spa. It is a very old hotel (a classic style) so i wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for somewhere modern.
We will be staying at this hotel again

Room Tip: Sea view rooms, you do get a bit of daytime noise from the road but they have very good double glazing so you cant hear it with the windows closed

This hotel was a 5 stars (Italian 5 stars) back in sixties and seventies for sure but no longer in 2014. It really needs a huge makeover. A lot of rooms have been refurbished (Penthouses 5th floor for the most part) but we were on the 4th floor and unfortunately ours wasn't.
That being said, we still had a great time at this hotel and room and bathroom even "old" where very cleaned and had the charms of the past and a beautiful view of the sea. It's a quiet place, you can expect to sleep tight (Bed needs to be changed, mattress is no good). Housekeeping, concierges and valets all very nice and helpful people. Decor feels ancient but was quite moving to have your breakfast served in stylish "argenterie" :-)
Internet connexion is free but poor reception. We loved the guy who performed songs at the piano in the evening. The hotel is in the center of everything, you can walk to many restaurants and casino. It does not have a private beach, will give you a voucher to access one with transats. We decided to hang out at the pool and have lunch as well since the view is so beautiful. Pool is old and a bit dangerous for kids (not because it's old) because it has rocks all around by design.
While we might have felt we were in "Grand Hotel Budapest", we had a very pleasant stay in this hotel and we would comeback for sure, refurbished or not.

Room Tip: Get a room in the 5th floor they all have been renovated. If not get at least a sea view, it's stunning!

Terrible experience. Hotel service and most of the people were with an arrogant atitude.
To print out my traveling ticket for my flight i had to wait a lot of time, they didn't help me as they should have to they just sent me in a room where internet wasn't working correctly. Hotel it self was very old and not renovated for example, TV didn't work, their own beach place wasn't open. There were only private beaches and most of them weren't even cleaned up.... we found a lot of rubbish there. There are many things i would like to notice to others but this was really a nightmare for me and my friends during our trip and i wish to nobody to feel the same as we did...even for internet we had to pay a lot which is unacceptable for us. After all this Hotel has a nice view but it's the only good thing they have.

San Remo is quiet in May, but beautiful weather, great service in a top hotel made this break unforgettable! Especially enjoyed the gym and spa. Staff were friendly, nice atmosphere in the bar area. A lovely, old fashioned, yet up-market establishment. Definitely one for a long weekend escape!

Room Tip: A sea view with balcony is a must!

Old Grande Dame in San Remo, one hour drive from NCE International Airport.
Very warm welcome from Antonella at the reception desk. Decoration in the room is old but well maintained and matching with the hotel style. The pool is heated with sea water, and the pool's restaurant offer a smaller menu but with fresh grilled sea bass... You feel like you are in the old days with modern amenities and service. The only bad point is Wifi... no network at the pool ,and you constantly need to reenter the long password. Will definitely go back before the end of summer.
