We found the Royal by chance 4 years ago, following a disappointing stay on the French Riviera; and thoroughly enjoyed our subsequent all too brief 4 nights within its' walls.
It was always our intention to return: and this we did in style, spending a week which encompassed our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Let me say straight away that if any reader doesn't enjoy dressing up to the nines, impeccable service, coupled with the utmost courtesy and deference, this Hotel will not appeal. It's Old Style Luxury....... thank goodness! Of course this comes at a hefty price: but in our opinion, it is worth it for those special occasions in life.
The bedrooms here come in all catagories, shapes, sizes and styles of decoration.
We splashed out upon a Deluxe Junior Suite on the Top Floor, which comes with a large Sea View Terrace: complete with Relaxer Chairs, Table and Sun Lounger. (Beautifully padded cushions are stored inside the wardrobe.) And there is an electrically powered Sun Canopy which comes down at the touch of a button; although it retracts when a strong wind is blowing. For us, the privacy was perfect. Our room had the original Pastel stripes and Floral decorations, which we prefer: but rooms are gradually being re-done in 21st Century style(Lots of white wood and shuttered wardrobe doors)
Two single beds are cleverly joined together to make a vast double; and the linen is changed every day. During the evening 'Turn Down Service' comes in, placing small white tea towels upon the mats on either side of the bed; and the second set of fresh
towels per day are hung in the bathroom. Most of the de Luxe Juniors have one large bathroom: complete with dual basins, loo, bidet, shower cubicle and bath: all lovely.
The odd few have two small bathrooms, on either side of the entrance vestibule.
The wardrobes are vast, the dressing table area has plenty of drawer space; but one criticism is that the mirror has no light above it: not ideal for a lady wanting to sit whilst applying her Make-Up. The Lounge area of the Suite is in front of the sliding glass doors to the Terrace: and has Sofa, Coffee Table and a Writing Desk and Chair.
Breakfast is taken in the Sala Aranci, or out on the Terrace if the weather permits.
There's the usual display of Cereals, Fresh Fruit, Meats and Cheese; and Hot Dishes of Scrambled Egg, Bacon and small Sausages. And tucked away in the corner, a bottle of
Sparkling Prosecco wine. The Italian guests are easy to spot amongst the Brits and Germans: because they dress up for breakfast, as well as Dinner. Room Service is available 24 hrs, with choices changing according to the time of day; but as one would expect with a Hotel of this Category, it is pricey.
Dinner in the vast Restaurant complete with Murano glass Chandeliers is an occasion in itself: with full Silver Service. The Maitre D, Scaretta, charmingly translates the Menu for guests: and we heard him speak no fewer than 4 languages. One enjoys two Starter Courses, (the Second is Pasta and Soup), Mains, and then the Dessert. These are laid out in a Buffet Display, and once your choice is made, the staff not only serve , but carry the Sweet back to your table. The Wine Waiter deserves special mention, too: sniffing the cork after he has drawn it from the chosen bottle, before he pours the sample.
I do agree with the point made by a previous reviewer, regarding likely difficulties for those with limited Mobility. There are many, many steps down through the lovely gardens to the Pool; and even more to the Promenade, and yet more to the Beach.
We watched one lady wheeling her husband's chair along the long driveway, most days.
Last year the Hotel opened a fabulous "Wellness Centre" in the basement, and it is a delight to indulge in. Beauty treatments were too expensive for our pockets, but guests have complimetary use of the Spa: and only a limited number are allowed in at any one time. There is a HydroMassage Pool; a Sauna; the most amazing Steam Room imaginable; Emotional Showers; and a relaxation area with Herbal Teas, Orange Juice, Fresh Fruit, and such comfortable Recliners that one could lie there for hours: cocooned in fluffy robes and towels, with soft music playing in the background.
For us, this was the ultimate relaxing break, so much so that our car only went out once in the evening, and one morning for a half day drive up the coast. There are plenty of places to explore, IF you can drag yourself away. The Concierge looks after Car Keys: Parking and then Fetching your vehicle, as and when. The Perfect Hotel doesn't exist: but this one gets pretty close. We're saving for the next Milestone: and our third visit.
