“Cracking hotel 20 mins walk from Sorrento”
Reviewed 15 July 2013

We stayed in the Caravel for two weeks in June/July 2013.

The hotel is based in a residential suburb of Sorrento, approx 20 mins walk away from the town centre. The local seafront is 5 mins walk away, with a good selection of bars and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

All the staff at the Caravel, are really friendly and welcoming - without exception, a friendly hotel. Check in was swift and efficient, and we had assistance with our bags to the room.

Everywhere at the Caravel is spotlessly clean, from the pool to the reception, from the restaurant to the bedroom, the staff there clearly take pride in the cleanliness of the hotel.

The bedroom itself is small-ish, but still plenty of room for a couple. The bed is comfy, and plenty of storage space in drawers/wardrobes etc. bedding was changed regularly throughout our stay. There is a patio door out to a small balcony, which had two chairs to soak up the rays! The room was air conditioned, which was quiet and efficient.

The bathroom was a good size, complete with shower over the bath. Towels changed whenever required (they do the leave the towels on the floor thing if you want them changed).

The pool is a good size, and we never had problems getting sun loungers.

The bar is good (with great staff!) and wasn't much more expensive than town. The food at the Caravel was just ok (we were on a half board rate), with the breakfast being more than ample, but the evening meals were not quite as good. Will post a separate review for the restaurant shortly. I do recommend the Moonlight pizzeria which is about a five min walk away from the hotel.

So in summary, a great hotel, with great staff.......hopefully we'll be back!

Room Tip: Request a high room so you get a view!

Revisiting the hotel caravel after 2 years, I was slightly concerned that it wouldn't be as great as the 1st time! I should not have worried! The staffs attention to detail is 2nd to none! I had requested a sea view and a sea view but could not remember the room number of our 1st stay. They had retrieved this info and put us in the same room with a lovely basket of fruit as a welcome back! We arrived mid morn and were given welcome drinks while we waited for the room to be ready. The staff are friendly, helpful and always courteous. The location is perfect for exploring Sorrento but avoiding the road noise and busyness of the main resort. If you want to go to Sorrento I cannot recommend the Caravel enough!

Room Tip: ask for a sea view, you'll be looking out over the bay and Vesuvius, well worth paying a little...

Stayed here June 2013. Good convenient location with added convenience of a courtesy bus into Sorrento town centre. Good food and service. Lovely to have a pool after a hot day seeing the sights. Reception staff were exceptionally helpful and polite. The area is quiet compared to other parts of Sorrento.

We stayed at this hotel with Newmarket holidays of Great Britain, our rooms were pleasant with good views of the surrounding mountains. The food was good but the range was not great. Breakfast was excellent with a good range of cooked and continential items, the salads at dinner were not very fresh and the tomatoes and lettuce semed to have been "hanging around a while". Dinner in the evenings was variable, the meat could be tough and a tomato and cheese dish which was served up on one evening was impossible to chew, whilst on other occasions, dinner was not too bad, and the sea bass was lovely. It is worth remembering that the eggs at breakfast are raw and an egg boiler is provided, don't do as a friend did and mistake a raw egg for a hard-boiled one yuk!
The gardens and pool area were very well maintained and the location, although a little outside of Sorrento was not too far away, the complimentary bus into Sorrento helped.
It would be an idea to book the free bus a day in advance for busy times as it does get full in the evenings. Although this does not mean you will get on, on one occasion we booked a return from Sorrento to the hotel but the bus was full so we had to walk back.
The beds were changed regularly and the room was kept clean but the beds were a little hard and uncomfortable.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be quiet but some have better views than others

The good points are - the hotel is in a very quiet area, it's very clean and the staff are very attentive and polite. Slightly on the minus side - the food is a little bland and some strange concoctions (lunches/bar snacks not good) but have found this in Italian hotels before - I think they try to cater for all tastes which is difficult, also the general age of the guests is on the plus side! Also the mini bus to Sorrento is not what it seems - it's shared with another hotel and not that regular so you need to book early. Got a taxi back from Sorrento - very expensive for the distance at 20 euros. Happy we went half board though as didn't look like there where any decent restaurants in the local area, just pizzerias. Swimming pool is good but again oversubscribed at busy times with limited sunbeds. Not good - towels in rooms like big tea towels, also water not hot enough.

Room Tip: The sea is a short walk away, you access the sunbathing/swimming platforms via a lift, swimming off...

If you want to wake up in silence under singing of birds, to you is exact in this hotel. Remarkable and attentive personnel. Excellent, comfortable numbers. Excellent breakfast. Green territory. Shatl bas which will take to Sorrento and back in hotel. Stop of public transport not far. I love this hotel and I will surely return to it.

This hotel has a wonderful staff who are extremely helpful. It is in a great location to go to Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Capri and more. I originally booked for three days and ended up staying 6 because I could go everywhere I wanted and stay in one place. Only downside the internet did not work well in rooms I had to use lobby. Very nice pool and shuttle into Sorrento. The tours pick you up at the hotel or nearby and the hotel can book them all for you. Great places to eat nearby .
