“Absolutely brilliant we will be back!”
Reviewed 21 August 2011

My husband and I recently returned from a 10 night stay at the Alpha Hotel. We couldn't recomend this hotel enough! The room was lovely and we had a great balcony overlooking the pool. The staff are so friendly and helpful in particular Salvatore! The breakfast was lovely and the pool was really nice too.
The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the train station so it's really handy to get to Sorrento, which is just one stop on!
We can't wait to go back!

We stayed at the Alpha for one week on half-board basis with our 11 year old daughter. We have never written a review on TripAdvisor before, but the hotel asked us to do so, instructing us that it would be very helpful for them. We hope this is helpful to you.

Although marketed as a 4-star hotel, we'd struggle to give it 3-stars. The rooms are antiquated and dirty (dubious marks on the walls, curtains and bedlinen). The double bed is two single beds pushed together and the headboard is therefore not attached to the bed, making for uncomfortable nights. The bathroom was in need of a good scrub, although the towels were changed daily as requested.

The pool area again requires attention. The sunloungers and plastic garden furniture need a good jet wash. The pool is 1.5 to 3 meters deep and our daughter could not even standup in the shallow end. There is a smaller paddling pool, howevere this is not suitable for swimming. The pool area is overcrowded, and unless you "reserve your sunlounger with a towel" before 9am, you'll be sitting on a deck chair in the shade.

Breakfast is standard continental style, and although there is plenty of variety, it does not change throughout the week. Tea and coffee is poor and juices are like undiluted cordials. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the room. Dinner reminded us of the 80s, although generally well cooked. The head waiter made our daughter feel very special and said to her "you tell Salvatore if you don't like anything, and I will sort it". However, this was certainly not the case on more than one occasion. An example being when the set menu only offered a selection of swordfish and prawn in brandy sauce - we brought this matter to the head waiter's attention 10 hours prior to dinner, asking for a simple carbonara (which is offered on the lunch menu), even this simple request could not be fulfilled and was met with a rather surly response. On another occassion the only alternatives were mackerel-like fish or a plain omelette. Inspite of this, the waiters were friendly, courteous and efficient.

Overall, we expected a four-star service based on Tour Operater brochures, on-line reviews and the hotel's own marketing information. What we received was 3-star meals and 2-star accomodation. If you read the other 'poor' reviews like ours, you will find that they concur.

The service at the Alpha Hotel is first class.
The staff just can't do enough for you especially in the dining area.
Salvatorie, the dining room manager is amazing as is Luigie in the bar and all the waiters.
We were half board. Breakfast was first class and the evening meals were just amazing.
Our room was spotless and and very comfortable but no tea/coffee making facilities which was a pity.
I loved the pool area which was busy but very quiet with no loud music.
Sant'Agnello is a short walk away.
Sorrento is a good half hour walk away involving busy roads however you can catch a bus or train.
I would say this hotel is more suited to adults and is small and friendly.

Room Tip: room 109 has a huge balcony

We began our tour of Italy at this hotel and what a wonderful way to start it off. We travelled with 2 boys aged 10 and 8. The room we were given was basic but very clean, air conditioned, electric shutters for the balcony windows and the children had proper beds (no matress on the floor travelodge rubbish). The hotel itself is conveniently located with the Sorrento - Naples railway line a 5 minute walk away with easy access to Vesuvious, Pompei and Herculaneum et al.

The staff were incredibly friendly, all of the time, helpful, with plenty of local information and assistance in getting around using local transport and honest, I dropped some money on one of the poolside loungers and it was put aside for me to collect the next day!

Our youngest son has a dairy allergy and we asked where we could locally get him some soya milk for breakfast. We were told that this would not be necessary and someone was dispatched to collect some for him. Every breakfast he was presented with a pot of his milk without fail. This may not sound like a massive deal but for a family that travels a lot this is quite unusual, as everyday you normally have to repeat the same request to each different member of staff, that's if we're lucky enough to have some supplied in the first place. Not here though, they all knew of his requirements and made sure that he was happy. Salvatore, the head waiter, also made sure that the kitchen went the extra mile. Rather than let out son 'make do' with something suitable from the menu, he had his own dairy free cakes and biscuits made for him, so that he did not feel left out. Also all of his evening meals were either adapted for him, or more often than not, specially created for him, which made him feel very priviledged indeed!! I can honestly say that we have never had this amount of attention anywhere, either UK or abroad. So for anyone out there with special dietry requirements our experience was brilliant.

Anyway, long story short, lovely hotel, happy and friendly staff, great food, brilliant time had by all and would, without doubt stay there again.

This hotel and its staff exceeded our expectations and was the icing on the cake for a perfect holiday, our thanks and gratitude to salvatore who made sure we wanted for nothing his team is an absolute credit sara who always has a smile and nothing was ever a problem, the hotel even had a meal for us when we arrived close to 11 pm which was a first for us and helped to make us feel special from the start.
We stayed half board, what can i say about the food FANTASTIC, there was nothing we didnt like it was fantastic our compliments to the chef and his team.
Luigi was a star very friendly and gave outstanding service . The pool area was very well kept and there is never a shortage of sun loungers with a beautiful pool . Our room was very spacious and very clean with fantastic housekeeping service. Our room had a view of the mountains and we loved to sit on the balcony and take in the view.
It was very easy to get around with the train station 10 mins walk and the local bus outside or its a bout 25 min walk into sorrento.
We loved everything about this hotel and its staff, we cant wait to come back!!!!!

We were on Honeymoon. Lovely hotel, more for couples, quite quiet. We had a garden floor room. It was clean and airy. Breakfast was good with a lot of selection and Salvatore would insist on carrying your plate to your table for you. Ever so helpful and friendly staff. Bed was turned down every night. Fridge in room was handy. Didnt eat in restaurant only cos we wanted to go out everynight. Train station is around the corner, takes you straight to Sorrento where all the night life is. There were a few bars just round corner if you did not want to venture that far. Supermarket nearby also. We loved the location as not being in "the middle of it" makes you venture out and look around more, but it wasn't too far from anything. Like this hotel very much!

Room Tip: Ground floor garden room did have lots of ants on patio, might want 1st floor upwards

I guess I need to preface this by saying that I really wanted a nice view from the room and was willing to pay extra for it, but not the sort of extra that was required by staying right in Sorrento. The pictures on Hotel Alphas website seemed to promise this and there was a sea-view room option. There was an option on their website that offered a deluxe room with a balcony and either a pool view, sea-view, etc. room. I emailed in advance and asked for a sea-view room and was promised one.
Upon arriving there were no problems (although a note to anyone coming on the train: Get off at the Sant Agnello stop, the one before Sorrento. We didn't even think of it and then got an overpriced taxi), and we went to see our room....our room which did face the sea, but you would never know it because you say a road and then trees. The trees obscured the entire view. Obviously there is nothing they can do about that (they can't cut down the trees for me), but I felt very deceived by the pictures online and the promise of a sea-view!
Breakfast was standard for Europe...never expect an "American" breakfast here, so eggs very runny and "bacon" which is really fried ham, but there was a good selection and lots of seating inside and out.
Nice things included a medicore singer one night, by the pool, which we listened to from the balcony. She's not great, but its nice entertainment in the evening. The pool was excellent, but it closed very early at 7pm, which is usually just as you're coming back from the day out.
I noticed though that about 90% of the people at this hotel are from the UK and are really treating this as a sort of beach getaway, so they were perhaps sitting by the pool the whole day!
The hotel is close to the local train and it's just over 1 euro to get right to downtown Sorrento. It comes often and regularly. It's a 30-45 minute walk to get there, so not bad and it's in a very quite area with a grocery store a block away. That said, since what I had wanted was the view and I didn't get that, I would have then liked something closer to the city centre. A couple too many compromises.

I don't regret staying here at all and really this hotel deserves a 3-1/2 star rating, but that's not an option. Hopefully you have a better idea from this review of what you're getting and you can make your own decisions about what's important to you!
