We have just returned from a very enjoyable week at Hotel Alpha. We would probably rate this as a 3 - 4 star hotel but with 5 star staff! This is what really makes this hotel. We were received a warm welcome at reception when we arrived and were always greeted with smiles at the bar or in the restaurant. The reception staff were always happy to provide travel advice and no query was too much trouble to answer.

The hotel was very clean and our panoramic room was comfortable with lovely views of the bay and the spectacular sunsets. On the downside however, the room, although well equipped was in need of a smarten-up. This was especially the case in the bathroom where we had a whirlpool bath which we did not use other than for showers as the condition of the tiling made it look somewhat less than appealing. The green bathroom ceiling created a very strange light in there too. It appeared that a number of rooms on the other side of the hotel had been redecorated with a gentler colour scheme and the floors re-tiled so perhaps this is an ongoing process. The air conditioning did struggle a bit and got rather noisy at about 5am.

The pool area and garden was pleasant but some of the furniture could do with replacing. We did not have any trouble getting somewhere to sit and if required, it was nice to get shade from the fruit trees which surround the pool. The pool bar certainly came in handy for drinks or ice creams.

We were staying on a bed and breakfast basis but ate in the hotel twice. The food was very good and beautifully presented and of course the service was excellent. Lots of choice at breakfast and lovely to sit and eat it on the terrace.

We liked the location and found using public transport even easier than anticipated. it is just a short walk to the station and a bus runs from outside the hotel to the centre of Sorrento but check the timetable first as it is a bit infrequent. We had no worries about using the trains late in the evening as there are so many people doing the same. The last train from Sorrento to Sant' Agnello leaves at 11.26 pm so we spent several evenings in Sorrento having dinner and enjoying the buzz. Staying in Sorrento itself would probably have been too noisy for us and it was good to return to the relative peace of the hotel.

We had a lovely holiday, were stunned by the beauty of the region and thank all at Hotel Alpha for a very pleasant stay.

We chose this hotel because of the excellent reviews and although a little disappointed, still very much enjoyed the facilities. Our room was 321 which was the only room on the third floor, so we had great privacy in our room and also on the lengthy balcony. Opposite our room was the Solarium which was basically a rooftop sun terrace. We occasionally sunbathed from here or just enjoyed the views. We rarely saw other people using this area which could be further developed. There were only 2 sunchairs plus 4 dead plants! The downside of our exclusive room was that there was a constant loud noise coming from machinery on the roof top which I think was linked to the air conditioning. The a.c. was very effective and came on when the electric blinds were closed. The furniture on the balcony was white plastic which was horribly stained. We asked for and received covers which was an improvement. The room itself was clean and comfortable with plenty of storage space. There was an effective hairdryer, safe and mini fridge. At peak times we found that the water supply did not cope with demand and indeed on a couple of occasions we had NO water for a brief period. On mentioning this to staff, we were advised to shower earlier or later!
The pool was cleaned every day and was excellent for swimming in, although non-swimmers would be restricted to the step area as the pool gets deep rather quickly. There is a section off the main pool for children. The pool is surrounded by orange, lemon and other trees which provided an attractive backdrop. We had no problems getting sunloungers, regardless of the time if day. It was also handy being able to access the pool area via the lift, which meant there was no need to walk through the reception area wrapped in towels!
We were half board. There was a huge choice of excellent food for breakfast: fruit juice, cereals, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, cheeses, cold meat, yoghurt, pastries, fruit, rolls, bread, toast, tea, coffee etc. Breakfast was self service and we mostly ate at a table outside which was lovely, apart from when we were chased by a persistent wasp! Tea/coffee was served by the immaculately dressed waiters.
Dinner was from 7.00pm and there was a good choice of food each evening. The head waiter, Salvatore, went out of his way to provide alternative food if required. The other waiters/waitresses were very friendly and efficient. There is no need to carry money in and around the hotel as staff prefer people to sign for drinks bills etc. and pay everything just before leaving. Best to keep a note of how much you are spending as drinks are quite expensive.
One evening there was entertainment during and after the evening meal which came in the form of 2 singers/guitar players which was pleasant. On another evening there was entertainment in the gardens with a brilliant female singer and an equally brilliant keyboard player. We really enjoyed this evening and took part in a fun dancing game.
We tended to go out after our evening meal and went into Sant'Agnello which just took 5/10 minutes to walk. We discovered 'Tony's Bar' which we returned to several times. Tony spoke very good english and went out of his way to welcome everyone who used his bar facilities. He played a great variety of music and even played tracks by Bocelli when we mentioned that we liked his music.
There is a very useful supermarket just along the road from the hotel.
We were amazed at the number of people who drive around on scooters. Indeed many young people seem to make this their evening entertainment, meeting up in the square, then storming off en masse on their scooters, only to return 5 minutes later. After a break they repeated this exercise. It was also rather alarmiing to see the number of cars with dents and scratches along them. Walking back to the hotel one day we passed 15 out of 16 cars which were dented/scratched. You need to keep your wits about you when crossing roads as not all traffic stops at crossings. On one occasion a car stopped for us and we started to cross, only to see a scooter shoot past the stationary car! We also witnessed one bump during our short stay.
We decided to walk the coastal route from Sant'Agnello to Sorrento on our first day. It was pleasant enough while there were pavements, but was dangerous when the pavements disappeared due to the erratic driving which was commonplace! We were also disppointed that we did not have views of the sea on the way. We preferred to travel by train. The Circumvesuviana takes only 2 minutes to take you into Sorrento and costs less than 2 euros for a return journey. It is better to get your tickets from the Circumvesuviana station which is only 5 minutes from the hotel. Newsagents will charge you more than double for a 'tourist' ticket which our Thomson rep. was encouraging! The station ticket office is not open all the time so plan ahead and remember to validate your ticket in the orange box machine before getting on the train.
Sorrento is an excellent base for going on trips. We travelled to Capri, Rome, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius, which I will review separately. We only stayed for 1 week which is not long enough to explore all that is on offer.
All in all we had a great holiday and the temperatures were in the 30s every day!

Room Tip: If you enjoy privacy and don't mind background noise, ask for room 321.

We stayed here during the last week of August & travelled with Citalia.
Firstly, the helpful & pleasant staff, along with the very good food, are the best features of this hotel & in our opinion the only features that can be described as any where near 4 star.
In all honesty this hotel should only be graded as a 3 star & if you believe any other then you have never stayed in a true 4 star!

We refused our first room, number 106, the shower had a lot of mould & rusty broken fittings & tiles & was in desperate needs of an upgrade. A shower gel dispenser on the wall in the bathroom is more Travelodge than 4 star, no toiletries were provided. The small balcony overlooked a noisy dusty road.

As we arrived late at night & the hotel was full we had to wait to be offered another room until the following morning. This was handled extremely well by our Citalia rep & the hotel manager. The room we moved to, number 202, on the second floor had a lovely balcony with a beautiful panoramic sea view & the bathroom was much improved although the mould issue still needs to be addressed in here too.

The pool area is not a relaxing place due to the constant traffic noise & the fact that you struggle to actually lie in the sun due to the positioning of the fruit trees as they cause so much shadow. The trees attract many insects & mosquitoes, we’ve never been bitten so much on any other holiday. The pool area needs a thorough deep clean, the outside shower area is disgusting with green algae & slime around the bottom. There are loose tiles that need replacing.

I expected there to be a few children but we encountered many & some of them were not well behaved & their parents didn’t seem to care about controlling them. I understand from talking to other guests that complaints had been made to the hotel about the noisy screaming children & their inflatable’s filling what is not a large pool in the first place. This hotel really should be adult only.

The Amalfi coast is a beautiful part of Italy & the public transport means it is all easily accessible. Some buses need to be picked up in Sorrento so from this hotel a train journey or a long walk is necessary first. We booked a full day Blue Cruise through the hotel & feel it was good value at 41euro per person. We caught the boat in Sorrento after being picked up at the hotel & sailed around the coastline, calling at Capri to swim, Positano & Amalfi. A drop off back at the hotel ended a hassle free enjoyable day.

We would love to return to the Amalfi Coast but unless this hotel addresses the issues mentioned, we won’t be staying here.

We loved the relaxed atmosphere and were very impressed with the friendly helpful staff at this Hotel. Our family room was ideal for 2 adults and 2 children (aged 8 and 10) had a balcony (I think all rooms do) and efficient air conditioning which was appreciated at the time of year we went. The room was decorated to a high standard as was the rest of the hotel.
The food was excelent and the staff went out of their way to ensure that our children, William and Megan, always had something they liked. We were particulary impressed with Salvatore the Maitre d and Luigi the Head Barman. Both are highly skilled professionals who were also very frendly and welcoming.
Evening entertainment was a big hit with everyone. But was discreet enough to not overwhelm.
The hotel is ideally placed to catch the train to Pompeii/Herculaneum/Vesuvius or into central Sorrento with the station a 5 minute walk away and tickets can be purchased from reception.
The beach is also a 5 minute walk away. But the hotel pool which is set in a lovely garden tempts you to stay put! We will definately come back.

Stayed with friends at the Hotel Alpha. On the whole I agree with the positive reviews of previous travellers.

The service is very good and in my expereince all the staff are very helpful, professional and kind. The food is pretty good and on most nights there was something for everyone to eat (although there were a couple of hiccups, these did not spoil our view of the food and resturant).

There is no doubt that it is in an urban setting and that the roads do get busy. The panoramic view rooms do give a view of the sea in the distance and of Vesuvius but they are also facing the roads. The 'small' road was still busy during the week and services such as street cleaning and rubbish collection do seem to happen in the early hours of the morning, and the scooter whines were ever present. However if you are aware of the fact that it is in an urban setting on booking then its something to come to terms with. The hotel tries to offset the busy environment with lovely if bijou grounds and the whole hotel appeared to be kept very clean. The public areas were nice.

The positive about the situation of the hotel is its proximity to the train station. Train travel is cheap ( its possible to buy train and bus tickets from the hotel as well as Tabbachi shops and at the station (not at weekends it seems). It is easy and cheap to make your own way to Pompei, Herculanium and Vesuvius. Entry to the archeological sights is also relatively cheap. Word of warning. To see everything at the two main archeological sights and travel on ones own recognicence it is likely to take all day and early starts are probably recommended. We also travelled to Ischia. Its possible to make ones own way there and its cheaper than the arranged tours, however be very confident that you catch the right bus as we followed the Rough Guide and ended up travelling the wrong way round the island from our intended destination. Although local people tried to be helpful do not expect people to speak English to the same degree as the 'mainland' Fab views but squashed in a public bus not knowing where you are going or where to get off dulls the experience !

The staff at the hotel were particularly good with children (Salvetore was a definate favourite with our youngest person on the holiday) and everyone I spoke to in the hotel appeared very satisfied with their hotel experience.

The only negative comments I have about the accommodation is that the bathroom (specifically the bath) in our room did need replacing and updating and I commented as such on the hotel survey. Also the air con is a bit noisy. It was very hot and the air con did not work as well as perhaps one would expect but it turned out to be adequate. The only other aspect that I would comment on is that the pool closes at 19.00 which is dissapointing when returning after a long day out. I suspect the aim is to ensure guests are ready to have their meal within the allotted time however an extra 30 or 45 minutes would make a difference. (Mozzies are a problem and I came away with masses of bites but it is to do with the area not the hotel.)

Nowhere is perfect and there are small things the hotel could do to up their game but having said that the Hotel Alpha does pretty well and for a good standard of service, food and cleanliness with access to a reasonable pool I would recommend the hotel particularly as a base to see all the local sights.

Room Tip: All the rooms I saw seemed to be of a similar standard. The garden rooms seem less noisy but only a...

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a week in August - it is a short journey from Sorrento itself and as a result is far less busy.

Staff are great - reception team answered all our queries without fail and were attentive at all times. They spoke Italian, English and I heard some German too - really polite and pleasant people. Bar/waiting staff all attentive and polite, please learn to say buon giorno/ciao etc etc. to be polite back to them!!!

We removed the drinks from the fridge in the room and topped it up with cheaper supplies from the supermarket. This was never an issue.

Room was light, airy and had a great view of pool.

The one drawback would be the road noise...that carries on all day. I would admit that you do 'zone out' to it very quickly, so you do not realise there is traffic there at all.

Food is good - we ate there for 1 night only as we preferred to try alternative places. I would suggest that others do the same as you are missing out on some good meals.

Cleaning staff great - polite and keen to please.

All in all - a great choice. I cannot imagine staying in central Sorrento which is way too busy, when you can stay here and lounge at the pool some days. The local train - Circumvesuviana - is less than 10 minutes slow walk away and trains run regularly until about 11.30 at night. We relied upon this service and not once did it let us down.

This was our first holiday in a very long time, and we really wanted to relax. These days, really good service is thin on the ground, and the average traveller doesn't know what to expect. The service at the Alpha is excellent. The staff at the Alpha have the 'personal touch'. Each guest is made to feel special in some small way - and it all comes across as very genuine. The atmosphere at the Alpha is relaxed, calm, peaceful. There's a warmth to the place that can be missing in a lot of modern hotels. We woke up each morning feeling refreshed and happy and we really appreciated it, so thanks to the Alpha team.

We enjoyed a very comfortable panoramic room on the second floor, with balcony overlooking the pool. We had a tub and shower in our bathroom, fresh towels every day and fresh bedlinen every other day. Other features included a hairdryer, a safe, a fridge and a television. Our room didn't have wifi or ipod dock or anything like that, but none of this is necessary when you're in such a beautiful sunny place. We especially enjoyed the pool itself and had no trouble finding a sunbed at any time of day. Breakfast is delicious, great pastries, great coffee. The hotel also provides the option of lunch and evening meal, which we tried a few times, and were very happy with. There are literally hundreds of restaurants in the area, so variety in eating out is no problem. I'd reccommend taking the bus to Marina Grande and trying the seafood places. Also, there's a sweet little place a short walk from the hotel just down by the water's edge that has a stunning view although the food is nowhere near as good as the Alpha's. We were in the habit of getting up early, swimming all day in the sea and just doing something romantic in the evenings, but the hotel did offer some fun cheesy entertainment for those wanting to stay up a bit later. The bar also stayed open until midnight, but we were never disturbed by any noise. The bar itself is excellent and the cocktails are classic and delicious. All extras are charged to your room and you pay at the end, so there's no need to carry a purse around, but keep an eye on your tab.

Here are a few random tips ftw.........
Italian people are charming, highly social and charismatic. It's polite to make the effort to speak a few words in Italian, even if it's just a simple 'Ciao' - it doesn't matter if you get mixed up - everyone at the hotel is so gracious.

The Alpha is one train stop outside of Sorrento, 30mins walk, but it's not too much fun to hike it in the heat. Don't take taxis as they are overpriced, public transport is easy to use with a bit of effort, but one of the coolest things to do is hire a little scooter, on Capri for example it's about 30 euro for two hours and you need a license and credit card for deposit. It's worth it to fit as much sightseeing as possible into your day trip.

Make sure you bring mosquito repellent - the Alpha has quite extensive gardens and almost everyone is wandering around with little red marks on their ankles.

The Alpha doesn't provide an airport shuttle of its own. If you're travelling to Naples airport and you have time on your last day, it's nice to take the ferry to Naples instead of the bus or car. It's only 11 euros and from the port it's a short 3 euro bus trip straight on to the airport. We stopped for pizza in Naples and it made for such a nicer day that sitting on a bus in the heat.

Well, I've written loads, so I obviously loved my holiday. Thanks again Alpha :)
