Alpha Hotel
Ranked #6 of 20 Hotels in Sant'Agnello
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 July 2012

Well, what can you say, it was our third trip to the Alpha hotel in three years, we are becoming addicted, and who would not: the quality is outstanding and remains so as we witnessed on every visit. Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff (both at reception and in the restaurant/bar) like we were family. The room, as allways, well appointed and very clean. The food, well incredible, special thanks to chef. The staff (all of them) extremely polite, friendly and excellent at their job. Very well kept pool, ideal to take a lazy day with poolbar. Even if you do not like "animation" you will get cought by the singing along and dancing they organise twice a week. You just can't help yourself...and thursday nights they have a gala dinner...
As for the location and things to do, we refer to what other guests have already written and add just a couple of things. There is a bus that stops in front of the hotel and takes you to Sorrento (city and harbour) that runs "irregurarly" but certainly at 9:36 A.M., the C-line to Marina Piccola. It is usually there when the boat arrives on the way back from Capri. Easy !
We had a great time renting a Capri boat (right behind the bus/boat ticket office in Capri harbour) and had a hell of a time. No licence or experiance is required.
Conclusion: Sant'Agnello is a good location to stay, more quied than Sorrento and very well positioned to take excursions. Off course, if you pick Sant'Agnello, there is only one place to stay: the Alpha, a nice family run hotel, not only to take the family but they treat you like family. Mostly frequented by nice British people and the odd Belgian couple.
See enclosed a picture of two of the magnificent staff, Salvatore and Rocco with us.
Just one downside to the place: you will defenitely gain weight

From the minute we walked into reception and experienced the quickest checking in procedure imagineable we knew we were onto something a bit special. Our suspicions were confirmed when we entered our room, large, airy ,clean, spotless bathroom and a balcony overlooking fruit trees that was bigger than some rooms we have stayed in.
The Alpha plays to its strengths, and they are the staff and the pride they take in providing first class service, always with a smile and often with a laugh and a joke. Without exception we found them to be wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and at the end of our stay I felt the need to thank as many of them personally as I could for making our stay so memorable.
As we had noted from reviews we had read before we went the food at the Alpha is something that has to be tasted to be believed , and never has a truer word has been written.
The breakfasts had everything anyone could ever wish for to chose from, fruit, cereals, eggs, bacon , a selection of cheeses and cold meats and pastries and cakes that were delicious.
A routine we quickly fell into was the reading of the menu for dinner that was put up every morning, we were not alone in this and I am sure everyone who read it was left as full of antcipation as were we.
These meals were consistently the best food we have ever had anywhere ! The variety, the freshness, the authentic Italian feel and the flexibilty to swap thing around if we wished made each one a delight.
All this would not have been possible were it not for Salvatore and his team, they were superb each playing their part in the experience. We quickly saw why Salvatore is something of a legend in his own lifetime, but he was first to admit that he is far from a one man show and his passion was mirrored in all the staff.
The location of the hotel is perfect for all ages. We chose to daily walk the 30 minutes into Sorrento ( in a vain attempt to walk some calories off ) but with the train station just up the road and several bus stops nearby everyone has a choice.
I could go on further but I will end here by saying that I defy anyone who stays at the Alplha to find any faults with either the hotel, its staff or its facilities and if someone does they deseve to stay at home next summer.

We spent two weeks staying at the Alpha and I have to say it was excellent. The staff really go out of their way to please and the food was excellent. I would return to this hotel in the future. I was on package so not sure about value if booking direct with hotel

What a fantastic holiday at the Hotel Alpha. It was clear from the outset that the staff would go out of their way to ensure that we enjoyed our holiday. Like every well run business, the management create the correct atmosphere, and it is obvious that their high standards are duplicated by the staff. Salvatore was at the centre of all that happened in the hotel and seemed to be there everyday, most of the day. On speaking to him on many occasions, he is clearly a very passionate man and it is his sincere wish that each guest experiences a wide variety of Italian cuisine and culture. Food was excellent with plenty of variation. Cakes to die for !! We stayed two weeks and the menu was never repeated.

If you are looking for a hotel with plenty of night life, and lots of entertainment going on within close proximity, then hotel Alpha is not for you. We appreciated the quieter vicinity and with the railway station nearby we could get to the centre of Sorrento in 2 minutes. Or alternatively have a leisurely walk in 25 minutes, if not too hot (coast road preferable). Trains were fairly frequent and you could buy your tickets at the hotel for 2 euro 45. However, if you venture into Sorrento for an evenings entertainment, the trains and buses stop around 9.30pm, so you would have to walk or take a fairly expensive taxi ride back to the hotel.

With the train station being so near, it was ideal for taking trips to the 'must see sites' of Pompeii and Herculaneum. A trip on the train to Pompeii took half an hour and cost just over 2euros one way, entrance fee 11euro and 5 euro for a hand held audio guide. A fantastic days entertainment walking and living 2000 years of history. A good tip would be to go prepared with plenty of water and something to eat as you are sure to spend most of the day there.

Herculaneum is about an hours trip and is the same price as the Pompeii trip. We obtained a train timetable from the tourist information office in Sorrento and it is well worth bearing in mind that there are some fast trains available which can knock 20 mins of your journey.

We also went on a trip along the Amalfi Coast. We purchased a day travel ticket at the hotel for just over 7 euros. This included the train to Sorrento and a bus trip along the length of the Almalfi drive. We managed a visit to the wonderful town of Positano, and then went on to Amalfi. We wanted to go on to Ravello but ran out of time.

The island of Capri is also a 'must see' which again was well worth the trip and experience. Return boat fare was 35 euro, and island trip 20 euro. Boats around the island cost around 14 euro.

I think you would have your work cut out to find a better four star hotel than Hotel Alpha.

What a lovely hotel. The room, bathroom and balcony were all spacious, and well appointed, and the pool was bliss. The staff we're friendly and extremely helpful. The breakfast was also very good, with a huuuuge range of yummy fresh goodies. The location was very good, close to the train station, and then 5 mins via train to sorrento. I have read on previous reports that the hotel was quite noisey, due to the nearby busy road, however our room was overlooking the pool, and was really quiet (we slept with the windows open for the cooler nights).

The only downside was that while the room we were in had been recently renovated, and included a wonderful spa- the spa leaked whenever we used it, or had a shower. We reported it to the staff, who said they would look into it, but we didn't hear any more about it. This didn't deter us from using it, but meant that the bathroom was flooded for most of our stay, which after 5 days was a bit of a nuisance.

Would definitely stay here again, and recommend to others.

Room Tip: Perhaps ask for a room overlooking the pool for a quieter stay.

We stayed in Sant Agnello 6 years ago and decided to return and found this hotel via Trip Advisor. We booked the hotel via Thomas Cook who gave a 25% reduction as we booked 7 nights - this was definitely cheaper than going direct to the hotel on the dates we wanted.

Positives
Good sized room and bathroom.
Our room had a lovely balcony overlooking the pool.
The electric shutters were excellent and kep the room cool during day and quiet at night.
Good location for buses and trains (we arrived and left on the Curreri bus from Napoli airport)
Salvatore has a real charm and warmth. Waiting staff very good generally.
You can ask for mini bar to be cleared and use it yourself for beer/water/wine for 3 euro/day

Negatives
The hotel is on quite a busy junction, so the pool area is a bit noisy at times.
We were on bed and breakfast and ate in the hotel once and from a food point of view, I would say that the breakfasts although plentiful needed some variety. The fruit salad was tinner, fresh would have been lovely. Maybe a range of individual yoghurts. It was the usual fare in Italy. Again, our dinner was OK - the main could have been a bit hotter and I know we would have struggles to eat there every night. But that is just us, I can see many people were happy to eat breakfast and dinner every day there.
