“Excellent Hotel - Perfect base for exploring the Sorrento area”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Our recent visit to Sorrento was greatly enhanced by our week long stay at the Hotel Alpha. Our room was very clean and comfortable, and the breakfasts and evening meals were of a good standard, plentiful, and varied. All of the staff went out of their way to be helpful and pleasant - the restaurant staff in particular deserve a special mention for the way they took care of us. The hotel has a very nice outside pool and bar surrounded by lemon and orange trees.
Situated in the suburb of St Agnello the hotel offers respite from the crowds and traffic of Sorrento city centre, whilst remaining within easy reach of all the tourist hot spots. Immediately outside of the hotel you can catch a bus to the old Sorrento town centre/market and to the harbour (10/15 mins) for ferries to the Islands of Capri, Ischia, or a cruise along the Amalfi coastline. Within ten minutes walk of the Hotel you can catch a train to Naples, Herculaneum, Pompei and Vesuvius, or get a bus for the cliff top drive to Positano, Amalfi and Salerno. The public transport is frequent and very cheap, although the local bus time tables seem to be "approximate" probably due to the heavy traffic in the city centre. You can walk to the town centre in about 25 minutes, but this may be a very hot experience in the middle of the day, and some roads have no pavements so the traffic can be uncomfortably close at times.
Overall, I would say the Hotel Alpha offers a perfect base for exploring Sorrento and the surrounding attractions of this part of Italy

Nothing better than a 'buon giorno' and a smile to start the day in Sorrento. Without exception all the staff at the Hotel Alpha from reception to departure ensured our stay was a wonderful experience. Helpful, polite, professional and pleasing, nothing was too much trouble. The wide selection on the varied menus provided a true 'Taste of Italy' and the Gala night with the Versuvius ice cream cake was special. The hotel is ideally located to visit the numerous places of interest. Board the train to Pompeii, Herculanium and Naples and take the 'coast to coast' bus for Positano, Amalfi and Ravello or to the Port for the boat to Capri. The hotel has a lovely ambience with a 3m. deep pool with sunny and shaded areas and a lunchtime menu if required. Perfection. Mille Grazie

Room Tip: choose either bath or shower only room

Just got back from a lovely week in Sorrento with my parents to celebrate my sister's wedding and booked the Hotel Alpha through Thomson as it was close to the wedding venue. Sant' Agnello is about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Sorrento, but a bus stops right outside and only takes 5 minutes. The local train station is also only about a 10 minute walk which can also take you direct to Pompeii/ Naples/Sorrento. The main hotel has been refurbished, but on arrival we were given basement rooms in the old villa behind. They were dark with a view of a hedge and a lesser standard than we expected. We were told that along with classic rooms in the main building, these were part of the usual Thomson booking. When we asked to be moved, we only had a choice of upgrading the 2 rooms at an extra cost. This we did as this is probably the 1st and only time my parents will holiday abroad and wanted to give them the best experience possible. I don't think the original rooms should be rented by Thomson and feel we should have been able to move to the main hotel at no extra cost especially as my parents have mobility problems. I don't feel that the rep did much to help when we told her about this the next day. However........the hotel itself was lovely...spotless.... pool area and terrace very good...and the dining and bar staff were so helpful. A special mention to Salvatore the Maitre'd who was so lovely and very funny....nothing was too much trouble. Another bonus.....half board with table service.... such a relief to find out it was not a free for all buffet. You don't get the fantastic views of the expensive coastal hotels, but a good compromise pricewise....

Room Tip: Rooms at the front overlook the pool Ask for a room in the main building.

Our weeks stay at the Hotel Alpha could not have been more enjoyable. Whilst a little bit out of Sorrento(30 min.walk),there is a local bus that stops outside and takes 10 mins into Sorrento Centre(traffic permitting). The food is of a very high standard with waiter service in the evening(a nice touch) all supervised by Salvatorie, who takes great pride in presentation and service, all staff were very pleasant and our room was kept spotless.
We would recommend the Hotel Alpha without hesitation!

We got back a couple of days ago from our one week holiday to Hotel Alpha. Our flight had been delayed on the way there, and as a result we got to the hotel in the late evening; however, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the kitchen staff had meals waiting for all of the arrivals, and all of our luggage was taken up to our rooms for us. This made a very good impression on us, and it continued to get better from there. We had chosen the half board option, with both breakfast and dinner offering a great selection and good quality food. All of the waiters were very attentive and friendly; in particular, the head waiter Salvatore must be mentioned, as he always made the effort to talk to every table and made sure that you were one hundred percent happy with the service and food.
The rooms were very well presented and maintained throughout our stay; seeing as we were a family of four, we had two rooms (rooms 115 and 116). One thing that must be pointed out is that our rooms faced out onto a road; although we were set back, traffic could still be heard. However, seeing as we chose to keep our balcony doors closed at night, this did not create that much of an issue for us.
One of the best things about Hotel Alpha is the staff who work there; everyone was extremely friendly and helpful, and any questions we had were always answered. There was also a board up on the wall near the lift, which had bus and train timetables and different excursion companies that we could use. Although we booked our holiday through Thomson, we didn't actually book any excursions through them because the prices worked out too expensive for the four of us. However, using the knowledge from the hotel, we were able to go on trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and do a drive along the Amalfi Coast for a much cheaper price. For Pompeii and Herculaneum in particular, we got the train from Sant'Agnello train station to the sites, and booked English-speaking tours ourselves upon our arrival, as there were many tour groups who operated there. One thing that must be noted is that although the Pompeii site was right by the train station and was easily accessible, Herculaneum was further away from the station and meant that we had to pay for a 10 minute mini-bus service to take us to and from the site. As for the Amalfi drive, we booked it through a company that we came across when walking through the Sorrento town centre called AVI Travel Agency. The town centre itself is also not far from the hotel; whenever we went into town we used the bus, which only took about 10 minutes to get from the hotel to the main square. Thank you to our tour rep Sam, who was very helpful and informative; in particular, she gave us a tour on the first day, which meant that we were able to familiarise ourselves with the town centre.
Overall, we found this to be a great holiday and were extremely satisfied with the hotel. The fact that the hotel was smaller meant that you were always seeing familiar faces around and felt comfortable to have conversation with other guests. The food, service, maintenance and cleanliness of the hotel was also very impressive, and we would not hesitate to return to Hotel Alpha again in the future.

Room Tip: If you think you would be bothered by the sound of traffic at night, a garden view room would be bet...

Nice small hotel in quiet area away from the bustling Sorrento centre - which suited us.

We'd describe it as a nice small family ran hotel, that is very friendly, professional and accommodating (for example, they provided an extra 3rd bed for our 9 year old).

Whilst not centrally located, It's easy to get around with a bus stop outside the front of the hotel and a railway station 5mins walk up the road. The small station offers regular quick trains both to Sorrento and towards Naples which is about an hour, stopping at Pompeii and Herculaneum - use timetables as rough guide for trains arriving though! ;) - and take plenty of small change to pay for tickets.

There is good quality supermarket close at hand which we used to stock with holiday essentials and snacks.

The rooms are a reasonable size - but lack the usual UK kettle!, but do offer a fridge and safe - the Wifi is a bit hit and miss, but again good enough to keep in contact though.

Getting to the hotel - Travel time via road from Naples Airport can be over 90mins depending on traffic (despite the new tunnel). Only very brave drivers need apply for a hire car!! - roads are narrow, and driving is frenetic.

Salvatore in the Restaurant is a star! - his local knowledge and hospitality are exemplary!!

We enjoyed a trip to Naples (despite being put off by the usual guides).

Room Tip: Other travellers have mentioned road noise - we were on the first floor, road side and put the shutt...

We chose The Alpha Hotel based on reviews from Trip Advisor and also Thomson’s. The hotel is situated in Sant'Agnello which is a 45min walk from the centre of Sorrento. For the first 3 days we walked to the centre along the coast where there are some excellent views. The hotel is extremely well run, very clean with efficient and very friendly staff. We chose half board which was a very wise decision as the food was excellent. The menus are well laid out and usually you have a choice from 6 starters and 6 main meals. My wife is vegetarian so if there was nothing suitable on the menu, which was rare, then the excellent head waiter would sort it out. I would like to congratulate the head waiter who every morning and evening took time to speak to all the guests, a very professional individual who clearly enjoys his role. I would also send my thanks to all the other staff that were equally helpful and pleasant.

Our room faced the Via Paola Zancani which is a road running along the back of the hotel which faces a lemon orchard. The room was excellent, clean tidy and plenty of space and facilities including a free safe and free WIFI and of course air conditioning. It’s worthwhile taking a walk along this road towards the Panorama Palace as the views are excellent. During our visit in July 2014, we visited Amalfi, Ravello which was included in the bus tour around the coast organised by Thompsons. We also visited Vesuvius and Pompeii again organised by Thompsons. Generally we tend to organise our own tours but Thompsons are competitive and the tour guides were excellent. We also took in some costal boat trips. We did take a train to Naples which is a very busy city and can at first be intimidating. We took the water boat back from Naples to Sorrento at a cost of 12 Euros each (24 Euros). A great holiday and yes we would go back to Sorrento and the same hotel. The train, which is not air conditioned, takes about an hour and costs about 8 Euros
