“A beautiful, bright place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2013

We only stayed in the Grand Hotel La Pace for a night but we were very impressed with the hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful and our room was huge, lovely and bright and clean. The only down side is that the hotel is about 2km out of town (which we did not know at the time of booking)so if you don't have long in Sorrento its probably not ideal but the hotel offers a free shuttle service in and out of town at different times throughout the day.

Heard of this hotel from friends witch stayed at hotel La Pace a year ago for their Honey moon, and they could not stop to talk about it, how wonderful and pleasant it has been and they highly recommended to me when I mention that I wanted to surprise my partner for our anniversary.
We had a wonderful time at Hotel La Pace from the moment we arrived every single person of the staff was absolutely splendid and make us to feel at home. They quickly understood our needs and likes.
The rooms are nice spacious and comfortable, the hotel is absolutely stunning and the location is very convenient, closed to the center but not in the middle of the craziness of the traffic and the busy life of Sorrento’s roads.
A special mention of Vincenzo Sicignano very helpful in taking care of anything we needed, a fun guy with a great sense of humor and a professional attitude.
Thanks to everyone to make us to feel at home and looking forward to come back ;)
Sarah

My mum and myself stayed at the Grand Hotel La Pace for five days at the end of May 2013. We could not fault the hotel - the staff were friendly and helpful, everyone from the reception desk to the shuttle bus driver, and it was great value for money.

The hotel is situated in S'ant Agnello, around 5/10 mins car journey from the centre of Sorrento, however a regular shuttle bus courtesy of the hotel runs from 9am until 11pm. A taxi one-way would have cost around 20 Euros so this was a great perk!

We were upgraded on arrival to a sea view room which had brilliant views of the pool and coastline. The room was cleaned daily and we were impressed with the 'little touches' left each day e.g. macaroons and biscuits left on our bedside tables for us.

The breakfast options were great, with choices ranging from fresh fruit, cereals, meats and pastries to home-cooked omelettes and pancakes, as well as the standard cooked breakfast options (bacon, sausages, eggs etc...)

Overall a fab stay, would highly recommend and would love to return in the future - thank you for making our trip so memorable!

We found the best way to get around was by rail - the Circumvesuviana. However the ticket office at S'ant Agnello didn't seem to be open that regularly, and you are not allowed on a train without a ticket. Best thing to do is head straight to Sorrento where the train starts - you can get a ticket here from the main ticket office and you also get the best chance of a seat! Trains run every half hour or so - 30 mins direct to Pompeii and around an hour direct to Naples.

Would highly recommend Fauno Bar in the Piazza Tasso, great food and brilliant service - the lobster pasta in particular is a must!

What a beautiful place! The views from sea view balconies are stunning and the food is absolutely delicious. Regular bus service to Sorrento (free) and a short walk to the train station for a trip to Pompeii. I highly recommend this stunning hotel!

This is a good, large hotel situated on the outskirts of Sorento, some way up a narrow lane. It has a decent view of the Gulf of Naples, from the upper parts of the building, and is surrounded by the green hillsides so the setting feels good and not as urban as the hotels further in the town. A free shuttle bus runs on a regular schedule from the hotel to central Sorrento which is about a 30-30 minute walk away, although there are some limited facilities closer by in San Agnello which is about a 10 minute walk. Taxis back from central Sorrento are easily found, but relatively pricey at abiout E22 per journey. There is ample free car parkling at the hotel.

The first impressions are that the decoration will not be to everyone's taste, being something akin to garish faux-roccocco and is somewhat kitsch. The reception area includes the main bar and the breakfast area and main restaurant above. The standard bedrooms are of a reasonable size and relatively well fitted with the standard fittings, but the free wi-fi does not extend to the bedrooms. Beds are generally a bit hard, as are the pillows. Again, decor may not be to everyone's taste with bright yellow tiled floors and fabric covered walls, but the overall effect is not unpleasant. There are signs of wear and tear around the rooms, but overall the standard of maintainance seems good, although we had a constant problem with a bath plug that could not be removed which was not mended before our departure.

The breakfast service is a buffet, with fruit (most appeared to be tinned), yoghurts, cereals, cold meats, breads and pastries, some limited precooked hot options from servers and the option of a fresh cooked ommelette or pancake. Juice is from a machine and not very nice at all; tea is served in the form of a variety of tea bags and water; coffee is instant and of a cheap chicory variety. The breakfast service marks out that the 5-star rating that the hotel aspires to is not the international 5-star; this is more akin to a good 3 star hotel in the UK. The dinner restaurant offers a buffet and a la carte service and is of a reasonable standard. There is also a snack bar adjacent to the medium sized swimming pool and a terrace bar on the roof (closed on my visit). Elsewhere there are gym and spa facilities. Prices for hotel facilities are relatively high with a E10 surchage for room service and a charge of E10 per item of laundry. Food and drink in the hotel is also relatively pricey.

Overall, this is a good average hotel. It is clean and reasonably well run. The staff are mostly helpful and friendly and the facilities are good. Negative points are the distance from the centre of Sorrento, the rather poor standard of the breakfast and rather hard beds. This is not a 5 star hotel by international standards, but it is perfectly adequate and obviously is rather cheaper than a real 5 star establishment. The hotel appears to cater to a large number of coach based trips, many of which are from the UK but the guests on these were generally of a mature age and there was not a feeling that the stag and hen parties are likely to use this hotel.

I have been a manager in hospitality and my partner is a travel agent so we read the previous reviews here with a pinch of salt. This is our tuppenth's worth:

What makes a hotel Five Stars? Well according to Wikipedia it is quite a fair bit (You can find more here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_rating ) and to be fair to La Pace they have tried to cover most of the points that are listed, but that is exactly how it feels, they have tick boxed things and not actually meant them, the standards of finish were terrible!

A 5* property should be immaculate; it should have all those small little extras that you didn’t even realise you needed readily available without your prompting. It should have a service that is impeccable.

La Pace fails on all of that. The staff service was hit and miss, some brilliant some truly terrible. The visible lack of an overall Manager was evident as the staff really carried a lazy feel to their work.

Ok so the bad things:

On two days (not consecutive) there was no hot water as the boiler had broken down. We weren’t told there was a problem so let them know in case they didn’t realise. Instead of being apologetic and helpful the receptionist (Teresa) was extremely rude and even indicated that my partner was lying when he said he hadn’t been able to have a shower.

The air-conditioning unit didn’t work so you had to have the French window open, well the half that opened that is. Which unfortunately meant at night time you got insects coming in and the wonderful sound of the cockerel at 5am each morning.

On one of the days we actually woke before the cockerel though this was due to a very loud noise similar to the waste water system sounding like it was breaking down in the room above us. When we mentioned this to reception all we got was “There are no other rooms available”. We hadn’t asked for a room change, we just wanted the problem sorted so we wouldn’t be woken by it again.

The chamber-maid smoked in our room whilst not managing to remove the rubbish or room service glasses etc. As non smokers this was very unpleasant for us.

We noticed that the room along the corridor had their alarm flashing (for when you have a problem in the shower, have hurt yourself etc) so we again told reception, who again just didn’t seem to care!

They will try and sell you their own tours; they are not very good at giving you the information for anything to do with tourist visits if it isn’t with them. They are also not good at telling you things like public holidays interrupting services or when there might be other transport issues. You need to be persistent and very precise in your questions. They speak good English there but often lapse back into denial of English if they aren’t happy giving you the information you want.

And the good things:

It has to be the view from the bay facing rooms. To see the whole of Naples bay and Capri at night was just beautiful. As others have said ask for the upgrade if you can get it, floor 4 or 5 is great for stargazing from. The back rooms overlook the surrounding residential areas so you get a view of small holdings or roads.

Breakfast was ok, fresh fruit as well as the tinned, a range of bread and pastries, cold meats and cheese plus bacon though with frank-furter sausages not real ones. The fruit juices were far far too sweet and out of a machine rather than fresh. The pancake/omelette station was nice but was often used to heat up large pots of hot water for the kitchen downstairs, we didn’t ever find out why, which meant that the wait for omelettes was sometimes whilst they were cooked downstairs and not at the station. Cutlery and napkins were cheap and paper, not 5* grade at all. There is definitely a different service in a different room for those who were tour groups so if you are going with one of those don’t expect the same as we got. Waiting staff here were fine though somewhat unhappy with my disliking Coffee and every day persisted in offering it to me before making it obvious they thought I was a tad strange when saying no thank you!

The swimming pool is nice, though could do with heating if you don’t like the cold (not a problem for us but for some it might be off putting) and the removal of the side platforms which impinge swimming. It is cleaned daily and has a shower next to it for you to rinse off in. Sometimes lit at night and with the outside bar next to it, it makes for a nice relaxing area. Towels on hand to save you taking yours down and sun loungers all around it.

The bus shuttle, ran on time and frequently though as with most things Italian not between midday and four so if you want to get into or out of Sant’ Agnello during those times then you can use the public bus or train which are about a 10 min walk at the bottom of the hill. The bus will also pick up at other hotels so if you are hoping to use it to get to Sorrento for a connecting journey factor the additional time in. Unless you are brave or incredibly mad don’t try and drive in this area, it’s just mayhem.

Apart from one Italian family visiting this hotel seems to be more for the mature traveller so was quiet. It was fairly ok value for money (we got a last min discount) though really don’t expect 5*. It’s a 5* building that has had 3* management making for bad furnishings and finishes with a hit and miss service from the staff. In desperate need of someone who cares about hospitality to bring it up in standards.

Other information:

The train kiosk closes irregularly at the Sant’ Agnello stop so for weekends make sure you have your tickets already bought because the only other place to buy them when it is closed is apparently the bar which doesn’t open till mid day. Get the shuttle bus into Sorrento to get the train from there as it means you are likely to get a seat which by the time it gets to Sant’ Agnello will all be taken.

Don’t book organised tours as they are very very expensive. We saw one for Pompeii and Vesuvius that was €99.50, you can do it yourself for €30 all in and get twice the time at them! Public transport though scruffy works and is very cheap (e.g. €7.90 for a 24 hour return hopper ticket going all the way down the Almalfi coast or €4.40 single Naples to Sorrento on the train).

There is a lift from Sorrento street level to the beach, it’s about €2 return but saves anyone with walking problems that hike down the hill.

When buying limoncello or other similar gifts go to the supermarket (found behind the Sorrento railway station) as it is the same products only much cheaper there. Leather goods are fabulous here in Sorrento, barter politely, the price marked is often not the price they will finally charge.

Go see the artist at the far end of Via Fuoro, he paints some amazing pottery and is worth a visit, especially if you like sea figures/images.

Food is fabulous in Italy, if you can find the off track restaurants, they are nicer than the main tourist aimed ones and buy at local markets, salami meats and cheeses are all so much nicer and cheaper here and fresh fruit and veg is available on almost every street.

Enjoy yourselves…

Just returned from here and feel very relaxed. The staff were all truly delightful and always willing to help. We were a party of 7 and all experienced great service from the attentive staff - especially in the dining room but everywhere really. The hotel exudes prestige and there is plenty of room to relax in several different areas of the hotel.
