“Looks are deceiving”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

When we first arrived at La Pace the place looks like an amazing 5 star hotel. That is about where it ended after walking into the lobby. While very ornate and stately, the place is just worn out and tired. Everything needs a facelift. The rooms are a decent size and I thought the bed was comfortable. Nice french doors to let fresh air in. However, the bathroom was another story. It looked like there was water damage on the floor next to the shower and I came to find otu that the shower leaked like a sieve. There was no caulking on the glass side of the shower and every time we showered we had to put towles down to soak up the water. The water temp went from hot to cool to cold to scaulding. It was very difficult to regulate. The food at breakfast and at dinner was horrendous. The eggs were barely cooked and the fish at dinner was so salty it was inedible. The one redeeming thing was the spa. Both my husband and I had massages that were very relaxing and very reasonably priced for a hotel spa. (50 minutes for 45 euros - about the same as in the U.S.) One other nice thing was that the hotel had a shuttle bus that ran into Sorrento a few times a day. We did take it back to the hotel after dinner one night. All in all, I would not recommend this hotel and I do not think I would stay here again unless there was some updating to the place and they hired a new chef.

The Grand Hotel la Pace was a beautiful place to stay for our 2 night visit to Sorrento. The hotel is very modern with large rooms. Ours overlooked the Bay of Naples providing a wonderful view. The breakfasts each morning were well done with a great selection of foods. Our only complaint is that the hotel is not in Sorrento or near any locations which could be reached on foot. It would have been nice to be able to take a walk in Sorrento after dinner.

The hotel is situated a bit off the beaten track, about 1.5 miles from Sorrento. Whatever you do don't make the mistake of trying to walk to Sorrento. The side walks are very narrow and the Italiens drive as though they are chased by the police!!! Very scary!!! But there are several free shuttle busses into Sorrento a day. Which pick up at the hotel and drop of in the centre of town. The hotel sits on a hill side and the grounds are clean and well kept. The staff throughout the entire hotel was amazing at all times and could not do enough for you. The decor in the lifts and bathrooms is a bit tired and in need of updating but the rest of it looks amazing. The rooms were made up twice a day and little treats are left in the evenings. There is WiFi throughout the hotel, though not very reliable. CNN is the extend of english TV in the rooms, but you don't really need it to be honest. The breakfast is of good quality and choice, especially if you like cakes. We never had dinner at the hotel, as it was quite expensive at € 30 per person. Though Sorrento is horrendously expensive overall (a large beer 1l is €11), which is only topped by Capri, where a Coke will set you back € 6 (0.2)!!! Factor in the same amout you paid for your stay for spending money!!! The Shuttle bus will allow you good access to the Circumvesuviana (train), which can take you to Pompeii, Vesusius and Herculeum. It is simple no frills transport and the only thing that is cheap. There is a bar in the hotel offering a nice atmosphere. Hotel was very quiet and air conditioning in the rooms was very good and could be individually adjusted.

Room Tip: Always go for a Sea View Room 3rd floor and up. The higher the better the view.

Stayed at the Grand La Pace for one week half board. We booked half board thinking it would be cheaper than eating in sorrento but
soon regretted it as the food in the restaurant was odd. Starter consisted of a cold vegetable buffet and a hot pasta dish (which was a little too aldentre for our taste) . The main meal normally fish or meat (veal) was unexciting and not what you expect from Italian cuisine. The sweet tray consisted of rumbaba and other cakes covered in fake cream. So restaurant food ok if you are off your food. Sorry to be so critical but it wasn't good. Please do not consider half board option as food in sorrento is inexpensive. We only evening meal at hotel had it for two nights. Breakfast is also unexciting omelette bar closed. Streaky bacon and powdered scrambled egg with an assortment of bread, cakes and tinned fruit.

The hotel itself is very grand and opulent with a fantastic lobby. A definite 5 stars for the lobby but the rooms are 3 star. We had a room with a view of the pool and sea in the distance - the view was spectacular. The shower cubicle had mouldy patches, worn shower curtain and the water temperature very erratic! The shower drain was not covered and you have to careful not to tread on several spikes. The floors in the rooms are tiled and are attractive. TV is appalling with two English speaking Channels, signal is in and out (bbc world and cnn) and no option for purchasing movies. Not that it was too much of an issue but expected more. No complimentary tea making facilities and nowhere to purchase water. There are no shops nearby to buy anything.

Free wifi in the lobby.

Hotel staff are very friendly but doesn't make up for the rest of the poor facilities. Pool bar closed due to 'poor weather' despite it being 21-25 degrees. We had one night of entertainment which was a traditional folk night, again poor food. It felt like the hotel was closing down for the winter.

The shuttle service to sorrento runs at 9,10, 12, 4.30, 6 and 8.30. Picks up at 12.15, 4.45,6.15,8.45, 10.30. This is regular and on time and is much needed service otherwise you will pay around €24 for a taxi.
The hotel itself is great but let down by poor food, expected much more from 5 star. It could also do with a vending machine or a small shop selling refreshments.

It has been several years since I visited La Pace but my memory is still strong of how incredible it was. I have never seen a hotel so luxurious, and its setting made me feel like I was right back in Renaissance Italy in a rich Italian family. We had a room that led right out to the pool on the roof (coolest idea ever) and the view was incredible. Staying in this hotel really made my trip my first time in Italy and I cannot wait to return.

I'll do my best to be courteous here. The staff were fantastic. The hotel from the exterior, fantastic. That's where the quality ends. Very old, outdated rooms with uncomfortable beds. The promoted wifi is only available in the hotel lobby (not in your room). The breakfast was edible but not fresh or exciting. Dinner was odd and overpriced. There was a shuttle with an irregular schedule to get you to town. My wife and I joked that the hotel reminded us of the Overlook Hotel made famous in the movie The Shining.

As we were traveling with our 20-month old son, we were a bit dismayed with the €10 crib charge per night. We could have argued our way out of it, but chose to refrain from complaining.

No offense to the older folks out there, but this place is ideal for those who cherish nostalgic hotels. This one is right up your alley. Just make sure you eat while in downtown sorrento so you're not getting fleeced at the hotel.

Room Tip: Funny thing is, they literally upgraded us for free to the 6th floor master suites (room 602). It wa...

Lovely looking hotel with impressive lobby and pool area which we overlooked. Staff great and helpful. Restaurant overpriced. Tiled floors are great looking and easy care no doubt but they are bad news if the people above like moving furniture for hours in the late evening.

Odd plumbing meant next door shower sounded as loud as ours! Don't pay 5 star prices and expect noisy rooms. One English TV channel (the ghastly repetitive CNN ) as others kept dropping out.

It is a walk from town but not too bad unless it's hot and shuttle bus is handy.
