We travelled out to Sorrento for a wedding and stayed at the hotel for seven nights.

The reception area in the hotel is huge and very bling - definitely not to everyone's taste!!

The first night some of our friends ate in the hotel and found it to be very disappointing both in terms of price and quality, so for this reason we never ate an evening meal in the hotel.

The breakfasts were possible the worst I have experienced in any hotel, the cooked breakfasts consisted of sausages, bacon, boiled eggs or scrambled eggs which was completely disgusting. The cold breakfast consisted on some fresh fruit and quite a lot of canned fruit, some cold meats and one type of cheese, there were however lots pf pastries and cakes.

During the last breakfast we had there, one member of staff was happily bagging up dirty lined from the breakfast tables in front of guests - definitely something I would not expect in a supposed 5 star hotel!

It's about a 30 - 40 minute walk in to Sorrento itself (mostly downhill) which is fine if you are fit and able to dodge the insane scooter drivers, but the walk back is mostly uphill, so I wouldn't recommend it. The hotel is fairly close to the railway (about a 15 minute walk, which is great for catching trains to Pompei and Ercolano (much cheaper than going on organised trips).

The hotel runs a free bus service in to Sorrento which is fine when it is operating, but on several occasions there were signs in the hotel to inform guests it wasn't operating at certain times. One morning we were waiting for it for 30 minutes, the reception explained that they couldn't do anything about it - one of our friends who is a solicitor persuaded them to sort it out.

Due to the infrequent running of the bus we had to get a taxi from Sorrento on a number of occassions - please be aware this generally cost us 20 euros - We easily spent more than 100 euros on taxis getting to and from Sorrento.

The rooms themselves are fine, the bathrooms are starting to look tired and the showers ran fine one moment and then scalding the next.

The hotel wasn't dirty, but nor could it be regarded as very clean, the hotel corridors could do with cleaning far more often.

The majority of the staff seemed to be very fed up with life and would have preferred to be elsewhere from their demeanour.

From our explorations of Sorrento there are far better hotels closer in to Sorrento with better views and I would suggest that people explore other hotels before booking this one..

I am amazed at the criticism of this Hotel, you get what you pay for......

However in this case you get way more than what you pay for, we have visited Italy on many occaisions (15 in the past 5 years), our favourite region is here in Sorrento.

We have stayed at a number of Hotels but found this little gem last year and have now stayed here twice, we have booked for next Whit when we are bringing my elderly in-laws to Sorrento and will be booking again for August.

My Wife and I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 65 years combined and have worked in and stayed in many Hotels both in Italy and many other Countries.

I do agree that if you are using the English star rating system then this hotel would probably a 4* plus.

I would add however that I do not know of any 5* hotel in England that commands a view equal to that of this hotel, to stand on the pool terrace and look across the rambling slopes towards Vesuvious is truly breathtaking.

As stated earlier we have stayed here twice already and have/will be booking for two further stays next year.

The criticism of the shuttle bus is totally unfounded, it operates in and out of Sorrento six times per day, is very reliable and FREE!, if you can not plan your day around this number of shuttle services perhaps you should rethink your priorities.... YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY!

The staff at the hotel where very helpful and informative, they even spent twenty minutes outlining to a customer the options for travelling to Capri even though they could have opted to just give them the package info and pocket a bit of commision.

The air conditioning was excellent, the room cleaned daily with fresh towels and linen on request.

The hotel is a little way out of Sorrento which is not a bad thing if you are wanting a relaxing holiday, if you have never visted Sorrento one word that discribes this wonderful City is CHAOTIC!, i could have said magical, romantic, special, breathtaking or indeed many others, but chaotic sums up this unique area of this wonderful Country.

I would fully recommend this Hotel (and have and will do so to friends, colleagues and associates) and ask that you don't visit with any pre-concieved ideas but judge it on your visit, I know you will not be dissapointed.

We are counting the days to our return to this wonderful City and EXCELLENT hotel.

We stayed here for three nights commencing 7th September. The staff were friendly, the hotel was beautiful, the room was lovely, everywhere was clean, and we always managed to find a seat on the complimentary shuttle which was on time each and every day. The breakfast could have been better as there was a lack of fresh pastries and fresh fruit; however, there was always enough to fill us up for the day ahead. The view from our room was not great, but then we hadn't requested or paid for a sea view so what else could we expect. in short, it was a lovely experience and I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We were delighted with our room at the Grand Hotel La Pace - we were given an executive suite which was really roomy and comfortable - unfortunately the jacuzzi bath was broken and despite asking on 3 occasions it didnt get mended - on the basis that we hadn't expected it we couldn't complain but I wonder if they have got around to looking at it yet! Our main concern was the breakfast buffet - the food itself was not particularly well presented and therefore not appetising - the hot food was awful and well left alone - the thing that bothered us most though was the staff at breakfast - they were all so fed up - the restuarant manager certainly didn't inspire them and there seemed to be constant arguments and upset - on one occasion we saw one of the waiters put 2 fingers up to him behind his back!!
In my opinion the hotel needs to review its policies - its a huge place - its cetainly not full to capacity - the cost of drinks and snacks and use of internet is outragous - with a few changes it could be lovely - its only 3* at the moment but could be so much more.

Myself and my partner spent a week in the La Pace hotel in late August/early September 2010. We had read some of the negative reviews here before we booked but we had the opportunity of going for a cheap price so figured a five star hotel couldn't be all that bad.

First thing I'd say is that as everyone below has pointed out, this hotel is not in Sorrento. It took us (both very fit) 10 minutes to walk into Sant'Agnello and another 20 into the centre of Sorrento. The shuttle bus times are irregular but we found it to be a great service. You just have to plan your days around it.

The pros and cons of the hotel as we found them :

Pros
Cleanliness - Generally the hotel was clean and well maintained
Staff - The waiters and cleaning staff were excellent, polite and friednly.
Views - The views from around the pool area are absolutely spectacular
Pool - The pool is small for a 5 star hotel, but fine. The lounger beds are a little packed in around the pool, but there was generally no problem getting two together. A free towel is also provided.
Gym - There is a small gym in the hotel with a number of cardio machines and a jacuzzi.

Cons
Food - We went on a half-board basis but only ended up eating in the hotel twice. The food was sub-standard, unimaginative and the dining room is soulless. One evening we arrived at 7.30 for dinner (dinner starts serving at 7) and found most of the buffet salad bowls were empty. The waiters made no effort to refill them while we were there (in general though the waiters were fine). The helpings for main courses are small, not particularly hot and we really got the impression that the hotel was skimping on costs to save money. Breakfast was passable, but the juice was awful - straight from a machine and sickly sweet, and the hot meats were soggy and unappetising. On the upside, they do a great selection of breakfast cakes! There is both tinned and fresh fruit available.

Room - The room we got was small and decorated in a 70s style lemon yellow. It was what you'd expect from a 3 star hotel, certainly not a 5 star establishment. There was significant mould over the shower cubicle, rust stains on the mirror and the shower curtain had seen better days. However we did receive a complimentary bowl of fruit and bottle of sparkling wine.

Management - There were a number of instances of poor hotel management we noticed during our stay. One one occasion, my partner couldn't gain access to our room so went to reception to get a new keycard. The receptionist asked her our room number and simply gave her a replacement card without requesting any identification. Dreadful security. Also, on our last night we were due to have an early start to get our flight home, but at 1.30am a huge fireworks display took place for a wedding on the terrace which most of the rooms face. Why did this have to take place in the middle of the night disturbing the sleep of scores of paying guests? And why were we not even told through courtesy that we would be woken by what sounded like military shelling?

Pool bar - We paid €15 on our first day for a roll containing tuna and lettuce, a bottle of mineral water and a small pasta salad (which appeared on the salad buffet at dinner later!). We thought this was extortionate and didn't go again.

WiFi - The hotel rate is €10 per hour for wifi. I think somebody below said it was free. It isn't!

In summary, I think if you go to La Pace and expect a 5 star experience, I've no doubt you'll feel cheated. With the deal we got, we paid 3 star prices and got a 3 star experience. If you intend to book it, make sure not to go on a half board basis and make sure you are getting a very good price. The Sorrento/Amalfi Coast area is fabulous and I would strongly recommend it as a holiday destination. Just be careful about where you book your accommodation!

3 of us Arrived at the Hotel on 2nd August, with anotjer friend joining us in a couple of days.We had booked a room for 4 people, on arrival the entrance is very Grand the room that we were allocated was to small for 4 aldults and had a view of the fire escape and bins, we went back to the reception and the lady receptionist said she would try to sort things out, she did get us a bigger room which was nice but very very dark at the back of the hotel akthough really sunny the room needed lights on all the time. View was of a wall.....The package we had was half board, dinner was terrible, breakfast passable
lots of people complained whilst we were there. Staff at trhe hotel were very nice and made the stay more enjoyable. If you decided to stay at this hotel i would suggest room only, and book a room overlooking the swimming pool.
Found a very good bar in Sant Angello (Tony's Bar) and also an excellent Ristorante Ciao Toto.

We got a good deal on this hotel, which is a good reason to choose it... but if you're paying top dollar I'd suggest going somewhere else, like the Minerva, which should be a five start and is miles better than this place.

That said - the room was clean, and air conditioned, the pool was fine, the food was tasty - although they do serve a different variety of of the same five or six dishes every night (pasta, veal, pork, beef and chicken). If you order fish, it will be frozen. The indoor restaurant is a little disappointing, but there is table service. Breakfast was fine.

The outdoor pool bar needs a spruce up, and the food is a little pricy - a plate of pasta will cost you about 11-euro.

The biggest drawback to this hotel is the location. Its a long hot walk to Sorrento. There is a shuttle bus, but the times are ridiculous, it goes about 5 or 6 times a day - and the last bus back at 11pm is often full, which could leave you stranded. A taxi to sorrento would cost you about 20-euro.

The other problem is the balconies in the rooms are tiny - you can't really sit out on them, because they are only wide enough to stand on.

I'd go along with all the other reviewers who suggested that this hotel is overrated by at least a star. If you're getting a good deal - go for it - but don't expect it to be 5 star... next time we go back to sorrento we'll be paying a little extra, and staying at the minerva.
