“Majestic palace is the place to stay for a quiet but good holiday”
Reviewed 3 July 2010

This hotel is perfect for a family holiday, the rooms are large and airy and have air con that works, ensuite, fridge,Sky tv,safe (free). Our room was cleaned every day and the bed linen changed every day,Hotel was nice and clean and the staff were very nice and friendly and were very heplful.Good choice for breakfasts cooked bacon, sausage, eggs, cereals.toast yoghurt, fruit TEA! coffee etc. Pool was nice with good poolside menu with icecreams to die for. If you need night life sorrento is near ,about 1 euro by train or bus. train station nearby, costs about 4 euro return to pompeii freqent services. When walking watch out for crazy Italian scooter riders. This is a nice hotel ,we will be going back.

OK, so maybe this place is getting a little worn but to me that added character! It was perfectly clean and functional. The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful - especially the restaurant staff who could not do enough to help you!

The food was wonderful with an all you can eat buffet breakfast and a four course evening meal with great choices! I think the fresh fruit and salad came from the gardens we were overlooking as it was all so fresh.

Also, if you order a bottle of wine with your dinner and don't finish it, ask the staff to cork it and they will put it on the table for you the next day.

Our room was exceptionally clean and although we rarely saw the cleaning staff, they were in our room several times a day to clean, make beds, check the mini-bar and to leave sweets for us. We had a really good view from our balcony which overlooked Sorrento's suburbs and the surrounding mountains.

Make sure you spend some time on the rooftop. On one side they have a few sunbeds and on the other they have some comfy sofas. The views are spectacular and we usually had the place to ourselves. Take a bottle of Italian Prosecco up there and sit watching the sun go down.

It's quite a long but very enjoyable walk into the centre of Sorrento. In certain places the views of the sunset and scenery were breathtaking and Sorrento itself is lovely and quaint and has a great atmosphere.

To me this hotel is a little gem and I quite liked that it was situated on the outskirts of Sorrento as the centre can get really busy.

Use the SITA but if you want to go along to the coast to visit other places - it's cheap and easy to use. Positano and Amalfi are within reach and definitely worth a visit - even if you don't get off at Positano it's worth going on the bus for the experience and the superb views.

The train is also within walking distance of the hotel. It costs about €3 to get to Pompeii which I would recommend visiting. Pompeii is open until 8pm so go later in the afternoon when the crowds subside and it starts to cool down.

It's not often I want to go back somewhere but I would love to go back to this area again as a week wasn't long enough to see everything and I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Reading some of the other reviews I can't believe they stayed at the same hotel. I agree you can see how grand this hotel was in it's hey day, but the fact that it has aged is no reason to write it off. The cleanliness was top grade, in fact you hardly noticed the cleaners but I looked for dust on the antiques and art and could find none!

The service puts us british to shame. The maitre'd and his team couldn't do enough for us making us feel welcome and enquiring about our holiday every night. We were on half board and had a choice of 8 meals every night - we stayed for 2 weeks and didn't eat the same thing twice. On the rare occasion that the children didn't want anything from the menu the waiters went to the kitchen and came back with something to suit no problem at all.

The reception staff were friendly and spoke perfect english. They were really helpful especially when the family from hell moved in next door to us carrying on a domestic every night in the small hours - we were moved to the quiet end of the corridor less than an hour after asking and we slept so well we overslept and nearly missed breakfast!

I would point out that the pool is extremely deep - 3m at the deep end and 1.5 m at the shallow end - it was challenging for our 9 year old at first but he has now strenthened his swimming!

Be prepared for a walk into the centre of Sorrento - it took us about 25 to 30 mins.

This is an excellent hotel, nothing was too much trouble with the maitre'd Francesco in particular taking personal interest in making sure your holiday was as good as possible and suggesting places to visit. I wouldn't think twice about returning here.

What a shame. The Majestic was clearly once a grandish hotel in the cheaper end of the Sorrento pennisula. Now it is a faded, tired and extremely poor hotel. Not 4 star, not 3 star, but probably only just 2 star. From the chipped tiles and lumpy beds in the rooms to the creaking lounge furniture, this hotel is tired. Have I mentioned the staff yet? Well they were creaking and tired too. One felt so sad for the maitre'd and the head barman as they appeared embarrassed by the state of affairs, but tried hard sometimes to revive the former splendour of the place. We were on a first choice package which was fine, in that the reps were helpful and the transfers efficient and punctual. However, the tours are not worth the price. Do it yourself and not only will you save time and money, but you will have a better time. To our lasting shame we allowed ourselves to be suckered in on the lunch on the trip we did - a very blatant kick back for the rep at a shocking restaurant near Ravello. We sat there watching the rep tucking into fresh steaming bowls of pasta and a crisp salad as were fed slop and treated to wine with a whiff of neat petrol. Revolting.

However, the food at the hotel was simply dreadful. We were on a half board deal, so felt obliged to eat there, and the local restaurants didn't exactly tempt us as an alternative, despite what awaited us each night. It was so bad that it was actually quite funny as we would await each nightly offering with real anticipation to see if they could top the horrors of the previous evening. One particularly bad memory is the bowl of mussels which were clearly 'off', to the extent the smell of them approaching the table was sufficient to warn of the impending night of toilet hugging which would entail if you ate them. Fortunately we insisted on something else. Lastly the night of 'culture' was simply hillarious with some poor saps dancing and singing round the tables. The only reasonable thing was the wine, which was cheap and nice. All in all it gave us and our fellow guests something in common to discuss round the pool.

I wish someone puts a bit of money and care into the hotel, as it could be fantastic given its setting and imposing stature. Either way, we are unlikely to darken its doors again and cannot recommend it.

had a great time here in june 2008 so on return home re booked superior room half board which was what we had just done.on our arrival in 2009 we found staff had been cut to a bare minimum especially in the resturant where the service and food had taken a major turn for the worse.2 out of the first 3 days our floor was without water and the overworked reception staff and maintenance people could not cope.to tell the full story of this horror show would mean something of war and peace proportions suffice to say thomas cooks eventually moved us 100 yds down the road to a true 4 star the caravel luckily i love sorrento enough not to let these things put me off the place but when you pay these prices i think the package companies should shoulder some responsibility for ensuring us the customer get what we are paying for and not just shrug their shoulders and come out with well it is italy because they are taking a cut of the wedge as well they are still selling the majestic as a 4 star i just hope that things get back on track because it could be a really nice place.

I agree with the other reviews in that it must have been lovely in the 1970's but it could do with a bit of updating. The rooms were clean and functional and of a good size but could do with modernising. We had a balcony at the front which was ok but a bit noisy, the back rooms get a better view.
We were on a half board basis and found the food to be good. The breakfast is a bit basic but no more than you get anywhere else.
If you do any excursions, its handy as you will be the last to be picked up (lay in) and the first to be dropped off.
If you think Sorrento is a quiet place to visit, think again. There is not much to do there at all and you will need to travel to Pompei etc to make it worth while. Very expensive to eat out/drink etc, thanks to the euros and italians looking to rip off visitors at every opportunity.

Having booked and paid for a balcony room we were given a first floor room on arrival which was only changed after our protests. Reception staff could have been better. An English speaking concierge would have helped! Room (eventually on the 4th floor) was good with a view of the mountains. However, balcony furniture was uncomfortable. Food offered was depressing. Breakfast a reasonably good choice (always the same) but always cold even at 7 am. Dinner meals adequate but mostly unpalatable. The waiters are there solely to sell their atrociously over-charged wine!!! The location of this hotel is a 40 minute walk away from the centre of Sorrento and the courtesy bus only goes half way. Don't be taken in by the description on the website - you only get the better views by paying extra. The cleaning ladies are the only cheerful staff and do a great job! Sorrento itself and Positano and the Amalfi coast are a must see but Capri, although worth seeing, is a tourist rip-off area. Take the local train and buses though - station and bus-stops a walk away.
