“Very Friendly Hotel but avoid Room 14!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2010

We stayed at La Pergola for a fortnight after reading the positive reviews here. First impressions were very poor as we were allocated Room 14 which was tiny and the next morning it was over-run by ants. We were offered another ground floor room which was larger but I was concerned about security so decided to splash out 104 euro to uograde to a room on 1st floor with balcony which was much better.

The dining room was presided over by Raphael who was a superb host, very friendly and with an excellent sense of humour. All the other staff were very friendly too and the rooms were very clean and we had regular changes of towels. The food was very good at dinner the first week but seemed to decline in quality later (possibly as there were a number of large groups in - which is a point to note as some of these were noisy). Still perfectly edible though however they do seem to have a fondness for tinned peas and watermelon was the fruit choice on too many occasions. There is a weekly 'Romantic Evening' with a buffet in the garden but this is ruined by an appalling musician who plays a workstation keyboard and sings badly. In fact the worst thing about the hotel was the exisitence of inane piped music in the garden, on the roof (great views!) and in the restaurant. The breakfasts were fairly basic but ok.

The location is around 1 mile from the centre of Sorrento and a little less to the bus and rail station. As peple have mentioned use the back road rather than the main Corso Italia road which is very busy an fumy. There is an infrequent (and somewhat unreliable) 'C' bus from a stop near the hotel or a regular (every 20 mins) 'A' bus on the main road. Fares are set at 2.40 euro for up to a 45 min ride or you can get an all day ticket for 7.20. We usually walked in if we were just going to the centre.

So overall a nice hotel which gets 4 stars from me mainly because of the great staff (and some good risotto and pasta!)

Hotel La Pergola was ok but a long 20 minute walk from the center of Sorrento. The rooms were nice, but the walls are super thin so you can pretty much hear anyone in the hotel sneezing or talking! There was a patio in our room which was pretty. The breakfast was terrible. We had an angry waiter who was slamming dishes and silverware the entire time, which was NOT the way we would ever choose to spend our breakfast. He also was very rude about which table we should sit at, and made us sit at a table with DIRTY dishes on it. Also, beware that this is a haven for backpackers - we had a group of rowdy kids all yelling from their balcony until 1am when I complained to the front staff. They eventually quieted down but it was really annoying. Next time, I'd rather stay in the center of town in a location that is not so far away. It would be much more convenient.

Returned from this hotel on 4th June 2010 after a week's stay and would certainly recommend it. Although Sant' Agnello itself is fairly quiet, the hotel is only a 15 min walk from the centre of Sorrento, and if you take the slightly longer route, you pass a wonderful viewing point over the Bay of Naples. The hotel is a 10 min walk from the Circumvesuviana railway station which makes trips to Pompei, Herculaneum, etc, very easy.
We had wanted to stay in a small, friendly, 'Italian' hotel and it proved a good choice. Standards of cleanliness could not be faulted and the bed was the most comfortable we have had in any hotel. Yes, the shower cubicles are small but the showers are hot and powerful enough - with a bit of wiggling about, you soon learn to cope! Food was very good, lots of pasta and fish with standard continental fare for breakfast. The real winners, though, are the staff who are all first rate. The reception girls were all very friendly and Maitre d', Rafaele, (now don't be late!), a star in his own right!
The pool area is quite small so we left that to the children and went up to the roof terrace for our 'down' time. This is a wonderful part of the hotel with panoramic views and a large, comfortable gazebo area offering shelter from the sudden showers which the locals were keen to assure us were "very unseasonal"!!
The hotel is situated in a quiet side street and we had no problems with noise of any description. With it being a small hotel, you get to know the other guests very easily and they were a lovely bunch when we were there. (Hi Brent and Monique - hope the kitten was ok.) Oh, and if you do the quiz on Tuesday evening, the answers you need are Kentucky, kitten and Charles Saatchi!!
As far as excursions go, Pompei, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Capri are all easy enough to do under your own steam. However, we would recommend the Amalfi Drive coach trip. It is possible to do it using local buses but, judging by the length of queues at the bus stops in Amalfi, Ravello etc, I think you would be in danger of spending most of your day in bus queues. Once in Amalfi though, however you get there, do take the boat trip along the coast. For 10 euros each, you get easily the best views/photo opportunities and, as it was a calm day, our boat even took us into one of the grottos along the coast. We also did the Sorrento musical/dinner trip and, although we didn't have a clue what the show was about, the meal was excellent and it was a very enjoyable evening.
One last recommendation, definitely not to be missed, is La Favorita Parrucchiano, a restaurant on the Corsa Italia in Sorrento. From the road it looks quite small, but once inside, it opens up into 2 large conservatories and a garden area - absolutely gorgeous. And the food's good too............
In short, if you're looking for somewhere comfortable to use as a base whilst exploring the area, and don't want to pay exhorbitant Sorrento prices, you won't go far wrong at La Pergola.

We have just returned from a one week stay at La Pergola. The staff here are very friendly. Raffaelo in the restaurant is great and very helpful indeed. He recommended a very pleasant restaurant about 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel for the one night we didn't eat in and was a pleasure to talk to. Fabio in reception lived up to his name - fabulous! Anna, Gabriella and Marida were also very helpful and friendly. Our room was on the first floor, overlooking the garden bar and it was noisy at night but no more so than any other hotel in a busy town. It was also very hot as we got the late afternoon sun. You can pay an extra 10 euros a day for aircon and that would probably solve the noise and heat problem.

The food was fine. Three choices for each course which you chose at breakfast. We were perfectly happy with this.

The only thing we struggled with a little bit was the distance to town/stations. The hotel is situated halfway between Sorrento and Sant'Agnello stations and it took us 15-20mins to walk to either along the main road, mainly in single file and without a pavement in places. Other people may manage it quicker but it was very hot while we were there and this slowed us down as well.

We had looked at Tripadvisor before we went so we got exactly what we expected and found it to be excellent value for money but if walking is difficult for you this may not be the place for you.

We chose to stay here because the reviews said that it was small, clean and friendly and this is exactly what we found. We managed to do trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi coast easily and cheaply and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We would not hesitate to return.

Thanks again to all the staff for making this a very enjoyable holiday.

Did not like Italy. Did not like Sorrento. It is drummed into you about the beautiful Amalfi coast. It is beautiful, but then so are parts of any country, including the UK. Everything is too expensive and prices are aimed directly at Tourists. £24 for a day on a postage stamp lookalike "beach" with two sunbeds and an umbrella is outrageous. Thought the Hotel would be awful. Amazing, for a 3* Hotel La Pergola was excellent. Clean, Tidy, Towels changed every day, and food good. Then the icing on the cake; the staff were fantastic and really worked hard to make our holiday week enjoyable.
Sorry that we didn't like Italy and Sorrento, but we couldn't fault the hotel, unless you want to be a nit picker.

My wife and I stayed at this Hotel from 16th to 26th of May 2010. We stayed here last year because it was so good. The food is top quality, both of us are 100% vegetarian and I have an extensive knowledge of vegetarian cuisine having qualified with the Vegetarian Society of Great Britain. Nothing was too much trouble, the menu has a vegetarian selection on each of the three courses, and the chef- Luigi- was more than happy to cook somethng different if we wanted an alternative to the selection provided.

The waiter, Raffalele, is simply superb, top class and charming and very very helpful. All the staff at this family hotel are very charming and helpful and all speak very good English. The rooms are typically Italian for a small hotel, in other words not that big but spotless. Towels were changed daily and bed sheets every few days and the rooms were kept very clean.
The views from the rooftop terrace are incredible, the Bay of Naples to the left and Mount Vesuvius to the right. The Hotel is about a 10 minute walk into Sorrento- the only bit where this is no pavement is only about 100 yards and this is easily negotiated.

I could not possibly do this Hotel justice in a review- it is simply a gem- we have been to Italy 9 times now- and this place is like a secret find!!!

i am a little late in writing this review, however the Hotel will have been closed over the winter and re-opened in April2010. Our holiday was in Oct2009 and we booked La Pergola on a Half Board basis as independant travellers. This Hotel is exceptional value for money and ideal for those looking for a friendly Family Run hotel to use as a base for visiting the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast ( Sorento Bus and Rail Stations 10mins walk). Although the decor and furnishings are a little tired the Hotel is clean, has great character and has wonderful views of Vesivius from the roof terrace. The room we were allocated was small for a double but was spotlessly clean, overlooking the front of the hotel and was very quiet through the night. The hotel address is San Angello (5mins walk to the Railway Station) but is a pleasant, flat 15minute walk via Corso Italia to the centre of Sorento. The staff were freindly and efficient from the helpful and courteous receptionists, the thorough Room maids to the Incredible dining room Maitre d, Raphaele, who has the ability to entertain, wait on and prepare alternative Vegitarian meals given advance notice! We ate in the hotel every night because the food was well prepared, honest and above all tasted good before retreating to the lounge to finish our wine. We will definitely return to La Pergola.
