Reviewed 12 July 2013

We are staying at Hotel Corallo right now. First of all I want to say that the staff are very friendly and serviceminded!

But, that is the only positive thing I have to say about this hotel.

Last night there was a wedding right outside our balcony. The +100 wedding guests were running up and down the stairway the whole night. Some of them did knock on our door, children were screaming, music was playing. When you are on the stairway you are less than 1 meter outside our room and you can see right into it. Tonight there is a new wedding!! :( I am so glad we are leaving tomorrow morning.

The beds are so hard. It is almost impossible to get a good night sleep.
The wifi does not work in our hotel room.
The walls are so thin that you can hear the guests next door.

I payed approx 500 Euro for two nights. I didnt expect luxury but I did expect way better than this.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a room on floor 5 or 6

Hotel Corallo is situated in Santagnello, about a 15-20 min walk from Sorrento. This hotel is situated on a cliff overlooking the beautiful blue waters. The staff gave us an extremely warm welcome and sered us drinks. We loved the ambience and service at the hotel. The only thing is that they host a lot of weddings. My husband and I enjoyed the ambience and music of the weddings so we don't have any complaints. All in all it's a great place to chill out and do nothing at all however, if you are adventurous there are enough options for that as well.

We stayed at the Corallo for 7 nights in June/July 2013. Our welcome was very professional and the staff spoke very good English, we were welcomed with a free lemon drink, our bags were taken to our room and we were left to relax on the terrace.
We were then shown to our room by the manager, who again was very pleasant.
Our room was spotless as was the bathroom. We had a small balcony with a couple of chairs over looking the sea, a great little sun trap.
The room had recently been decorated and was very comfortable. It was fitted with air conditioning (this only works when the balcony doors are closed) as we had visited at a warm time of year this was welcome during the night.
The walls are quite thin, we heard tables and chairs being moved along the tiled floors, in other rooms and also the restaurant below.
The bed was slightly hard and a little uncomfortable. Fortunately we had been very busy during the day, so we were very tired and didn't notice the bed too much.
Please check my other reviews of things that we did during our stay.
Breakfast was very European, don't go expecting fry-ups! But they were very tasty and had a wide variety, I had heard one guest ask for eggs, the waiter had replied that they would do whatever she wished, so they are very accommodating. If you like your coffee, don't just ask for a "coffee" it's weak and not going to do much! Ask for an expresso/double expresso with hot water and milk - much stronger and tastier!
It is sad to see other reviewers say negative things about the waiters, they did all they could to accommodate us and were very polite and friendly. If you are they same to them they soon remember your room number and don't have to ask at every meal/ordered drink.
We stayed under a half board basis, this meant that meal choices in the evening were limited, other guests had a much wider choice. Saying that, the food was good and the waiters are all too happy to explain what they all mean. The quantity is wonderful and we never left our table still hungry. Every night we sat on the terrace watching the sunset as we ate, if you get there early enough you can get a front table overlooking the sea with un-interupted views.
We would particularly like to thank Giuseppe, the barman (whose name we did not know) and all the other waiter staff, they were all so friendly and we will miss them.
I would agree with the other reviewers in regards to the weddings, there were 5 out of the 7 nights we were there. They are not a problem and are in a different part of the site so apart from some music and occasional cheering they were not a problem. The food did not suffer while the weddings were taking place. They were generally over by 10pm so not a problem for sleeping.
The main issue was that the large terrace that the wedding breakfasts took place were not accessible for hotel guests, this was a shame as it looked a beautiful spot.
During 2 nights of our stay we were woken at 00:30 to fireworks. We are not sure if these were arranged by the wedding parties or a surrounding hotel/party. But they were very loud and woke us up with a start. The Corallo itself arranged fireworks for one night but this was well advertised and was earlier in the evening.
Some travel sites will state that the hotel is in Sorrento, it's in Sant'Angello which is a 30 min walk away (at a steady pace). To walk to Sorrento, walk out of the hotel, turn right and keep following the road as close to the sea as possible. This will take you to the centre of Sorrento. You can also take the train (takes less then 2 mins) turn left out of the hotel, then right, then left again and follow this road round to a little square you will see the railway bridge and turn right, go under the 2nd arch and the station is on the left, you can get trains to Pompeii, Ercolano, and Naples.
You can also take a bus, remember you need to by bus and train tickets from a tobacconist (marked with a T outside)
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at Corallo and were very impressed of the location for visiting all the things we wanted to do. We would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a sea view room, there is no point in staying here if you don't!

My wife and I really don't understand why this hotel is getting such great reviews. Perhaps we're not normal. But is it normal that when you turn on the "do not disturb" sign that the cleaning lady knocks on the door several times until you have to yell "Busy!" and that the reception calls you on the room telephone five minutes later asking if you need something?!
Terrible.

But OK, that was a minor incident. The real problem is that the room was NOT clean at all and that the service was overall bad. The hotels idea of service was to change sheets like 3 times a day but every "new" set of sheets contained a LOT of black hairs (neither me not my wife have black hair). The floors were never cleaned during our stay (think hairs, dust/sand from beach) and the bathroom was merely wiped clean, no thoroughness at all.

For a 4-star hotel the breakfast was really bad. Bread and massproduced ham and cheese, together with mass produced pastries and canned fruit?! Only during the last few days did they start serving mortadella ham and fresh watermellons but by then it was well overdue.

There were more waiters than guests at breakfast and each and every one asks you for your room number and if you want coffee/tea. Charming the first time but annoying every other time. If you're going to have five waiters for four guests at least teach them to communicate.

The hotel does have a nice view but how are we to use it without a balcony? Maybe other rooms had a real balcony, we didn't. The main balcony was always set for the next wedding (new wedding every night) so you couldn't really hang out there and enjoy the view.

As a general feedback, don't go to Sorrento at all unless you like paying 40-50 euro/day for entrance+2beds and umbrella on a crowded concrete slab. Go to Amalfi or Positano, you'll have a much more relaxing experience. And if you really want to visit Sorrento, travel by ferry or bus and limit your visit to one day and you won't miss much! It's an overpriced tourist trap!

I totally agree with the views of Lancslad_Sheffield - we had 5 consecutive weddings out of the 7 nights we stayed and although the food on the wedding free nights was superb it went downhill when the weddings started. Our room overlooked the wedding terrace and some weddings didn't start until 9pm with fireworks at midnight! One or two weddings would have been quite nice but not 5 in a row! The hotel is lovely, in a beautiful setting not too far from Sorrento. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but even they seemed to feel sorry for the guests during the days/evenings when the weddings were held. The management need to decide whether they are running a 4* hotel or a wedding venue!

We recently returned to the Hotel Corallo for the fourth time and were once again treated like royalty. We have noticed that on each visit the hotel has not only been improved aesthetically but the reception staff – particularly Emanuela (thank you so much for your lessons about Positano!!), Enza and Guiseppe continue to impress with their assistance and eagerness to ensure that your stay is comfortable, worry free and completely unforgettable. We once again enjoyed the ‘breakfast experience’ – nothing is ever too much trouble, with your preferences being noted and remembered the remainder of your stay.
We feel we must mention (and thank) the new bar manager, Gennaro, for taking the time to give us an insight into the real Italy in general and for entertaining us each time we visited the bar.
Finally a big thank you to the domestic staff whose dedication is remarkable – our room was actually cleaned and freshened three times during one day!!
Molte molte grazie per tutto il vostro gentile aiuto, assistenza e consiglio. Fino a l’anno prossimo!!
