“5-Star Experience in a 3-Star Hotel”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

Yes the floor squeaks just inside the door to Room 209. And the musty smell in the shower drain disappeared with our first shower. And it's not the best choice for someone with limited mobility. Side facing the street has pleasant view. Other side looks out at the side of a hill. Stayed four nights during the International Volksmarching Convention and would gladly stay again. Plenty of atmosphere in this 100-year-old hotel. If you want something nicer you WILL pay more.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room facing the street -- not the hill behind the hotel.

- Good dining room and very good breakfast buffet
- excellent room (see details below)
- excellent gluten and milkfree food, wonderfull gluten free bread (many different types, always fresh, apparently they did not mind at all to open different packages at a time), and every day the lady who took care of my food came to me at breakfast to check the plans for dinner.
- the bar is a bit noisy indeed because of the disco, where some people enjoy drinking a lot of beer, smoking a lot and make noise. Nevertheless we ( agroup of 16) managed to sit together in one of the available corners and have fun.

Room Tip: Rooms have different qualities as I understood from our group members. We (a couple) were lucky to h...

What 's all the fuss about!! This Hotel is clean, comfortable and the staff were helpful & friendly. There is a disco attached to the hotel. But did not keep us awake at night. We did stay in a extended chalet which consists of about 6 rooms opposite to the hotel . So just a small walk across the road to the main hotel. Our room was warm and comfortable. The food was of good quality & verity consisting of four courses. If you are worried about the noise of the Disco ask for a room across the road. Oh by the way i,m not Deaf. Location was excellent for access to Sella Ronda circuit. We enjoyed a great skiing holiday.

The hotel receptionist who was also the owner was an extremely abrupt and unfriendly woman. The staff were just as ignorant. The hotel was clean and the rooms adequate. Bar area quite basic not very relaxing as the Night Club next door ( with an adjoining door) wafted in smoke (thought it was banded smoking!) all evening till the early hours therefore the lounge/bar area stunk in the morning. Granted the brochure advertises a Night Club but what it doesn't say is it is part of the hotel, even being on the top (4th) floor our bed was vibrating from the music pounding through the floors/walls. Infantile 'adults' playing in the corridors shouting to one another visiting each others rooms and singing in a drunken state (no children, these were grown men). Banging on bedroom doors, outside on the louvre windows of the annex part of the hotel were our friends were put (which is not advertised). The 3 course meal consisted of the most rubbish food - frozen crocket potatoes and tinned carrots one evening, NO OTHER CHOICE - you got what you were given!! Needless to say as soon as was possible we left after the second night into another hotel. IT'S A HORRIBLE HOTEL horrible owners. Oh almost forgot, one of the drunken men managed to walk into our room at around 3-4am!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never written a hotel review here before but I promised myself while at this hotel that I would -- so others would know what they were getting if booking at the Wolkenstein.

It's not all bad, but there are some things you need to know before coming here. I'll get back to the inability to sleep later, but here are the facts:

First - It's not actually in the village of Wolkenstein/Selva, though technically it's within the village boundary. It's actually on the edge of St. Christina, the next town. Not necessarily bad, but important to know if you really planned to be in Wolkenstein.

Second - It's not actually close to the ski lifts, as advertised. We had to make a short walk downhill to the bus stop, then take a short bus trip to the nearest lift (and the reverse coming back). Not a huge deal either but not fun if you expected proximity to the lift.

OK, here's the worst. The hotel advertises a nice disco attached to it. Seemed like a plus when we booked, but this is no ordinary disco and it is not only attached to the hotel, it's on the ground floor -- and very, very loud. This is a hard core, techno, rave, headbanger disco that shakes every floor of the hotel until 1:30 or 2 in the morning, seven days a week. We were on the third floor with earplugs and still heard/felt the music and the shouts of the DJ. This is OK if you're 18 and will be in the club until then, but NOT FUN if you want to sleep so you are awake to ski the next day.

There's some good here though. The food was very good and the staff was pleasant and helpful. It's almost as if they are trying to make up for the noise. The rooms are OK, but vary widely in terms of what has been renovated. Our party had three rooms, and only one had a renovated bathroom. The other two had 70's era tiles, peeling linoleum floors, and rusty bathtubs. The furniture was a bit newer but already a bit tired. The beds were comfortable and I suspect if there was no music shaking them, you'd sleep quite well in them.

As for the area, nothing beats Dolomiti! Go there for sure, but probably avoid the Wolkenstein unless you like to party every night until the cows come home.
