“Half term ski trip at Maciaconi San Christina Selva”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

This was our second stay at the hotel - party of two families in two adjacent apartments. We came back because even though it is reasonably pricey, with a 3hr transfer from Milan, it just ticks all the boxes for us, 2 large bedrooms, good storage, 2 bathrooms, large living/kitchen area, with tv/DVD ( everyone brings their one fave film), dishwasher, fridge, microwave and 2 ring hob. Has 2 restaurants - hotel rest and large pizzeria plus 2 bars. We ate in about 50% and wandered down to the fab pizzeria in our slippers for the rest - they even brew their own beer. There is a heated outdoor pool which we used everyday looking up at the stars and a jacuzzi/steam area (located on a diff floor). There is a well stocked supermarket right next door, so everything in easy distance for self catering. As others have mentioned it is a scrupulously clean and well presented cozy hotel with helpful staff. My one complaint is the 30e per week for internet access (limited to one device at any one time) - seems uneccessary and expensive, given the flat rate for bb in italy is between 25- 80e per month and surely they also use it to run their own business? However a minor gripe really. For skiing, a huge vast area awaits but be aware there is a fair bit of travel involved, boot room outside in an adjacent garage and bus stops outside the door - you are no more than 10mins away from Selva or ortisei ( bus tickets 7e for week) and beware, the inspector got on every bus we took!! Busses get very crowded, so need to cram on or wait another 15mins. Ski school is a 10 min schlep downhill, nearest ski lift same route plus ski across a field to 2 man lift up to explore Monte Pana or get the bus to the very beautiful area of Seiser Alm. Nearest Gondola again 5-10 mins downhill to Ciampino gondola and on to Plan de Gralba, or get the underground railway to framolin. We skiied the Sela Ronda ( suggest anti clockwise to avoid the crowds) and we love Sieser Alm, but our best day was skiing over to Armentorola, on to the hidden valley with the horse drawn 'drag' at the end ....needs to be experienced to be believed!! All in all a great holiday in a great location. Après ski bars are family friendly - Snow Bar at the Ciampino Gondola or Luiskeller in Selva.

Dear guests,

Greetings from Val Gardena!

Since November 2012 the Hofer family took over the Hotel & Residence Maciaconi from the Demetz Family, transforming it in the brand new Boutique & Fashion Hotel Maciaconi, adding a new structure to the family driven Gardenahotels group.

With the change of ownership the concept of the hotel was completely revolutionized, as we do not offer residence service anymore, but instead a complete 4 star hotel service. Since than we were constantly renewating the structure with news like our children games room with miniclub, our massage room, the outdoor hot tub and many little things for your comfort in the rooms. Last but not least the completely renewated spa with an additional brand new bio Sauna.

We particularily focused on the gastronomy offering now the Gardenahotels half board, which contains a rich breakfast with local products, an included afternoon sweet and salty buffet with tea and a 4-5 course gourmet dinner with additional starter and salat buffet, as well as included á la carte choiche, garnished with thematic evenings such as Tyrolean evenings, grappa or wine tastings, candle light dinners, chocolate fondue etc. This all included in the half board package.

We kindly invite you to visit us again or for the first time at the new Boutique & Fashion Hotel Maciaconi, for checking all the news and improvements made since 2012, at your next stay in the Dolomites.

We can assure you that you will find the Maciaconi, like you have never seen it before!

Best regards from Selva Val Gardena,

We selected the Maciaconi through the Valgardena website and drove there from Venice Airport. The hotel is a pretty Tyrolian-style building placed at the plaza in Santa Cristina (not in Selva-Wolkenstein), just meters away from the skibus stop connecting the Valgardena. It has what would be a pleasant bar but for the cigarette smoking and a nice restaurant (ash free). Just beside there is a store selling just about anything you may need, from food to state-of-the-art ski equipment.

Staff is extremely courteous and helpful, always ready to provide ski advice, an adapter for your laptop or electrical plug or a taxi. The hotel is silent and the rooms are very well equipped with a bathtub with jacuzzi-style jets, TV and DVD player, and free wifi all over. Limited choice of TV channels though, particularly if you don't speak Italian or German.

They also have a superb outside pool with heated water, which we found really relaxing after strenuous days trying to cover as much as possible of the 1,200 km available to skiers.

The Maciaconi provides ski locks and boot heater in the garage. Parking in the valley is a nightmare, so if you absolutely have to drive, make sure you use the 10 €/day parking. In theory you can park outside the hotel for free, but there are only 5-6 places and it is always packed. Dump your car and use the skibus, you will save yourself a lot of trouble since most of the parking places are limited to 30-60 min and the local police enforces the rule. Skipasses can be purchased at the foot of the Sasslong lift to the pistes.

If you don't like busses, you can alternatively walk about 200 m to the Sasslong skilift and the underground train to Col de Raiser/Seceda area. Don't miss skiing the Sellaronda (green and orange), but only if you are a good skier, some of the pistes can be challenging. Otherwise head to Ortisei and Alpe di Siuisi area, which is friendlier to children and inexperienced skiers.

Breakfast is excellent, and the staff will be happy to reserve the same table for the length of your stay.

Great place, great area, great vacation. It was not cheap but it was well worth. We'll be back!!

When we arrived at the Hotel Maciaconi, we were very happy with what we found. It is a beautiful Inn in the mountains. Extremely clean and pleasant. I had my wife and three Children, it was our first time in the area. The accommodations were very spacious and up to date. The staff was very helpful, Most especially Moritz the breakfast was perfect. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay there. I am looking forward to a return.

This was our second stay at the Maciaconi & ,as previously we were treated like VIPs!
Daniella & her staff even took time to allocate us the same appartment which we had so loved in the previous year-great personal touch
The hotel also arranged for us to have "VIP" passes to the Downhill which was being held in St Cristina the weekend we stayed. This enabled us to rub shoulders with our "heroes" ,Bodie & Hermen,at the start gate restaurant!!.We have great pictures & fond memories which made our pre xmas break so special.
Thankyou to everyone at the Maciaconi-nothing is ever a problem to them!.

After reading reviews of how the hotel prides itself on its Feng Shui design principals, we were surprised to find our appartment had loose wiring on the wall and a disgusting view of the owner's dogs' mess area!
The loose wiring in the children's room was brought to the attention of the owner, who did not seem bothered- there was another light in the room after all.
This was typical of the "service" we received- no skipass service as stated in the brochure ("you can go to their office") , no lift shuttle service ("you can walk- it is near") and never a "have you had a good day's ski-ing?" or " did you enjoy your holiday?). Althought the hotel knew that our son had a birthday, there was no surprise cake or good wishes ( as experienced in Austria)
The fit and healthy breakfast was so frugal that we lost confidence in the catering and so immediately cancelled our half board, and some times, instead ,went to the over-priced Restaurant downstairs (part of the bustling soul-less Maciaconi complex, including grocery store, ski shop, kids' store, souvenir shop AND a smoking bar even though smoking in public places is against the law in Italy- "but the police say it's O:K here"- figure that!
Our appartment was lovely- modern shower with fluorescent lights and music, flashy jacuzzi, impeccably tasteful and natural wood flooring but the room views were the worst we've ever experienced on a 4/5 star ski hotel. From the breakfast room we could see...the pavement! And actually, rather than the 3 TVS ,some extra bin bags would have been useful! Or slippers! Or washing up cloths!
The Maciaconi has all the basic spa facilities but the layout is not very practical. There is an open air pool but the sauna is in a different part of the hotel, deep in the bowels with a tiny jacuzzi and a fitness room in an area like a broom cupboard.
The ski room has limited security- it is accessed via the garage which is frequently left open- FACT!! There is a flimsy lock-up for skis (children's skis are too short for this) and no lock up for helmets, boots or poles. Or maybe there is, but the reception did not inform us.
Particularly irritating were the aggressive instructions (in BIG BOLD print) given by the hotel about how to care for the flooring, opening the window regularly to avoid condensation, a deposit here for this key, a deposit there for the bath robe) without any effort at guest empathy or conviviality. Yes, we had to ask for extra toilet rolls!
We have stayed in other 4/5 star hotels in Austria and Italy and after ski-ing, we have been welcomed back by afternoon tea (strudels, cakes, pasta etc) but not here. Perhaps the reception can summon someone to get a drink- that's as good as it gets.
If you receive correspondence from the hotel in "Selva- Val Gardena"- this is not correct. It is in the deep dark centre of Santa Cristina, with a busy road infront, a loud bar on the terrace and a steep snowbank at the back! The view of the snow bank is at least preferable to the view of the owner's dogs' latrine! Feng Shui principles of design and well-being? I think not.
P.S I could not bring myself to take a picture of the view from the window!
