Hotel Solaia
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We stayed at the Hotel Solaia for one night on a family bike trip; the hotel is in a great location right near the heart of Selva but off the main street, and our room was amazing- on the top floor and we fell asleep looking at the lights of Val Gardena. The hotel is very clean and comfortable and has a nice lobby where you can hang out in the evening. Breakfast room is huge and sunny and the food was outstanding, including fresh-baked cookies. We loved it and would definitely stay again!

The Hotel Solaia is a lovely hotel that we stumbled across several years ago. We went 5 years in a row, and after 6 year gap, returned in February. It was even better than we remembered, having had all the bedrooms and bathrooms refitted and the downstairs areas smartened up. Egon is a great host and all the staff excellent. The 5 course meals at dinner time are of a high quality and the most expensive of the very good local wines was €16. Breakfast consists of the usual continental things, with lovely bread. The swimming pool and sauna are a delight at the end of the day, and there is a fitness room for those who haven't done enough out on the slopes!
Great location for the 2 lifts and you can ski right into the hotel yard. Also handy for the après bars - Luis Keller had always been our favourite, but now we prefer Goalies, Stua and the new Ski School bar ( just near the hotel) which had us dancing round the tables to the live music. To add to all this, it is a fantastic, enormous ski area though probably not suitable for novices as all the runs off the tops of the lifts are at least reds. Having said that, I don't know any info about the ski school so they probably cope very well with the beginners. All in all, our most favourite ski hotel and ski resort. I see some people think Egon does not communicate booking details very well, but it is easy enough to contact him by e-mail or phone to confirm your bookings.

Super nice place. Food was good, but could have been better. Breakfast, though was very good. Very good location to slopes and lift. Nice swimming pool and very nice sauna. A family run hotel for family travelling!

Me and my big family, we were 16 travelling together in january 2013. The host Egon welcomed me like a king all the time. Time to ski in the morning until 1600, then relaxing in fabulous spa and swimming pool that all the kids loved. Good, healthy food for dinner. We loved it there in the heart of the Dolomite.
Thank you so much Egon

Room Tip: If you are 5 in the family choose the top floor in the outside house. There you will get good prica...

I was with a tour group so all arrangements were handled by our trip so I can't speak to the pre-trip communication as others have.

What I do know is that the Hotel Solaia was a perfect place for our ski vacation in Selva. Egon and his team were gracious, friendly, and accommodating for our group of 12 the entire week. My husband and I and 2 other couples in our group had rooms in the newer outbuilding. Our room was huge with a large deck that looked over the ski trail going by. I think there is a wide variety in room views and sizes so I can't speak to all but I know many in our group had wonderful rooms with very nice views. We had breakfast and dinner there each night and very much enjoyed it. Service was prompt and the variety and quality of meals was excellent. They have a very comfortable bar area for apres-ski or pre- and post-dinner gatherings managed by Joseph who was funny, friendly, and wonderful to us all week.

I also think the location is perfect. It is ski in/out but we had rented skis at ski shop across the Ciampinoi gondola so chose to store our skis and boots there each night (highly recommend Alain ski service for ski rental - www.arnold-demetz.com). It was just a quick walk from the Hotel Solaia.

We have stayed at the Solaia on two occasions and have enjoyed our stay there both times. The first time we went to the hotel we were very concerned as we had not been asked to pay a deposit and many of our emails had not been answered. We arrived and there were insufficient rooms available - to Egon's credit he did not charge us for this night and we spent the night with our family of five in three beds! The next day we were moved into bigger rooms.

We returned the following year with a large group, all of who were concerned about the lack of deposit and lack of communications but trusted our word that it was a good hotel and we were sure that Egon would come through for us. Unfortunately, upon our arrival we discovered that two families did not have places - one of them for half of the holiday and the other for a few days. Egon made alternative arrangements for them but it was far from ideal.

We decided to book again for December 2012 but thought that to prevent confusion and double-booking we would book early. One of the members of our party sent an email through in November 2011 booking for December 2012 which was confirmed by Egon. Another email was sent through this week re-confirming the booking (as one does after our past experiences) and was told that he could not accomodate us - infact he could only take half of our party.

I phoned a friend who was staying at the Solaia at the time to ask her to go and check out another hotel that could now take our party and she told me that when they arrived at the hotel, they too were not given the rooms that they had requested and for a few days had all their familty in one room.

Whilst our stays at the Solaia have been great - I wouldn't risk booking there again, especially in peak season where it is difficult to make an alternative plan when the reservation has been bungled. Great hotel but shocking admin.

Room Tip: Facing into the village - rooms have balconies and seem to be a bit bigger.
