“Ok but not great”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

I stayed at this property with a friend during a one week organized hiking tour in July of 2014. We had booked the so called Luxus suite as we didn't want the supposedly substandard single rooms, nor did we want to share a bed in a double room. For some unfathomable reason we were first placed in a suite on the ground floor, which was cold, dark and without much of a view. This was quickly remedied however as soon as we pointed out that we'd prefer a room higher up in the building.

In short this is an OK but not great hotel. Selva is such a small village that anywhere there is going to be more or less centrally located. Staff was friendly, generally speaking. Housekeeping did a good job, our room (suite) was always clean. The gym is sufficient. I didn't make us of the spa/swimming pool area except to have a massage which was decent but not great.

Service in the hotel restaurant was often erratic and unprofessional. I got the impression that I was their first guest ever to suffer from certain food allergies, though obvously this cannot be the case: somehow my special needs were always turned into a big issue at dinner time, which made me uncomfortable, and the food I'd get finally was often disappointing. And at breakfast it wasn't until the second or third morning that they got me the kind of milk/youghurt that I need. On the other hand, I was brought organic bread and marmalade and whatnot, that had been bought especially for me presumably, yet that had nothing to do with my needs whatsoever... Another disappointment: wifi only works in the lobby, not at all in the rooms or anywhere else in the hotel.

Checkout was not handled professionally at all. Though our stay had been purchased and paid as part of a pre-paid package tour, we were made to pay some Italian tax directly to the hotel. When I protested, instead of insisting that I pay, they should have settled the matter with the travel agency, that supposedly had neglected to inform me and my friend of this tax.

Selva is a pretty picturesque village in the Dolomites, which are gorgeous, great for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. If i were to return, would I stay at this hotel again, wieghing in the pros and the cons? Probably not.

We have just come back from a week in Selva and stayed at this hotel. The staff are so helpful, the food is amazing and the accommodation very comfortable, clean and the whole hotelis kept immaculately. The facilities are brilliant with a lovely indoor and outdoor pool as well as a Jacuzzi and sauna and also an efficiently run spa.
The staff could not be more helpful and to be honest I think this is the best hotel I have stayed in. It is faultless.

Room Tip: The front of the hotel has brilliant views over to the mountains.

Have stayed in a number of hotels in leading mountain resorts and this was the best by far.
Location, facilities, dining, service, and all staff, was truly excellent. The dining experience was exceptional. The level of choice, the menu options, the number of courses available, and the quality of the food was 5 star. The chefs are highly skilled and each mealtime is an experience.
Highly recommended!

Certainly the best ski hotel I have ever stayed in and probably one of the best hotels I've stayed in anywhere. Everything about the place was done to a high standard and the staff were all polite and efficient. The two main highlights for me were the food and the leisure facilities.

They must have chefs working 24/7 in order to prepare the quality and variety of food on offer in the extensive breakfast buffet and at dinner. Everything served to us was of a consistently excellent standard, and whilst we were mainly happy to eat from the dinner set menu, there was also an a la carte menu and healthy option menu, from which you could swap courses for no extra cost. We really came to look forward to every meal we had in the hotel restaurant.

The second highlight was the leisure facilities. After a hard day of skiing it was lovely to be able to come back and relax in the jacuzzi, swim outdoors with steam rising off the water and snow around the pool, ease the muscles in the sauna and steam room and then relax on the reclining chairs with a cup of herbal tea before dinner.

The location is good - a very short walk to the bottom of the nursery slopes where you can get on their drag lifts and have another short walk to join the main lift system, or you can make use of the hotel shuttle bus. The village centre of Selva is also only a short walk. If you are skiing, the ski room facilities include secure individual locker storage accessed by your room key card with heated boot racks so that your gear is safe and secure, and warm and ready to go the next day. Overall, really an excellent hotel that we have already booked to return to for the 2015 winter season.

Having been to the Alps for our main 2 weeks summer holiday for the last 18 years we can only say that this was the best hotel and resort that we have stayed at. The food was superb with an exceptional choice. The staff were very helpful and very friendly. The swimming pool was brilliant, it comprised of a single pool that was divided by an automatic door, half the pool was outside and heated to 32 degrees C and the other half was inside heated to 30 degrees C. The Sauna was a family Sauna and therefore very acceptable to the Brits. We stayed in a Junior Suite with panoramic views, the room and views were amazing. We booked our holiday through Thomson Lakes and Mountains.

My partner and I stayed in this hotel last year and have since traveled quite a bit around the world. Every time we have been away we compare the hotel we stay in to the Gran Baita. For a walking holiday this hotel is hard to beat. Yes it is a little pricey but we felt it was very good value in the end. The five course meals are - well I have no words - each night for our week was a gastronomic delight. Breakfast was beyond belief as well with so much choice every morning.

Rooms were clean and the spa and pool centre just wonderful at the end of a hard days hiking.

The rooms are spacious and for our walking holiday the location very central in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The staff of the hotel make every effort to make you feel at home and at the end of the week we found ourselves wanting to stay just that little bit longer. We went with Crystal and felt the whole holiday was very good value for money.

We intend to go back a some stage when we have explored a little more of the Dolomites.

We visited Val Gardena end of march-beginning of april , and we were very lucky with the weather.
There was enough snow , the sun was shining , the slops were perfect prepared, all lifts working,
not many tourists ,perfect skiing conditions in the morning everywhere and in the afternoon only on the slops in the shadow. For hiking , the situation was different,as the walking path was almost everywhere not taking care of ,so there were areas with high, soft snow making walking very difficult. Regarding the hotel , I only have few remarks :
-the receptionist gave us total wrong informations about Sella Ronda slops and how to get there.
-the wardrobe has mainly this cheap cloth hangers that you get for free when buying clothes, or when taking them to the cleaning !!!!?????
-the food ,was good ,especially the italian buffet evening, but every day we had shrimps on the menu. I wonder what shrimps have to do with a mountain resort (except that they are cheap).
-the desire to save costs is everywhere :the little carpets in front of the bed , the toiletry ,the cloth hangers, even though the price of the hotel is high enough !
But, all in one ,it was a good holiday ,in a beautiful area . The personal was very professional,
except the young receptionist ,but she can only get better . There was the end of a long season, I can only imagine how tired everybody was , but they did not, in any form let us see that . I understand the comfort comes with a price, but who is willing to pay the price , does not want to see the hotels saving costs measures.

Room Tip: Our room was over the entrance . During the sunny days you would hear all people discussing in front...
