“beauty and serenity on the beach in the middle of town”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

Villa Baldi is a wonderful classic villa which is kept in virtually its original state. Set in mature quiet garden with sunny swimming pool it is the ideal place to enjoy the italian riviera as the Baldi lido is just across the palm set avenue.
The rooms in the old building are possibly a little eccentric but all very different quiet and each individually decorated whilst the annex, attached to the main building offers typical first class rooms.
Staff is invariably excellent - from reception to waiters as all part of a small team that gets to know the guests and treats you to an excellent stay.
Worth a visit is the bar with terrace onto the boulevard for pleasant evening cocktail in the cool of the night.

Room Tip: special rooms in the main Villa but modern luxury rooms in Annex - all air-conditioned

Just had the chance to stay many times here during the past years – alone for business, and even with my family. Friendly and helpful staff (despite the fact we are in Liguria, where most hoteliers and restaurant owners seem to hate clients) but not the fastest, great location close to the sea and good breakfast (and even better food in the restaurant on the other side of the road). Parking lot is provided, which is very important in this area (above all during the Summer). Rooms in the old part of the hotel are nice, clean and old fashioned (perhaps too old fashioned for the price you pay: please take this absolutely in consideration) and some additional efforts should really be done for such an expensive 4 stars (loud AC, absurd little TVs, overall noise level, little bathrooms)…Nevertheless a stay worth

We have just returned from a quite superb holiday at the Balbi. The rooms in the old villa are excellent and the staff service is faultless and friendly, with nothing too much trouble. The swimming pool in the beautifully landscaped gardens and the wonderful central location combine to make the holiday memorable and affordable. We recommend the half board option with excellent and varied food each evening in a delightful alfresco setting. We have stayed at the Balbi several times before but this time the whole experience was better than ever. The air conditioning is highly efficient without being obtrusive. We recommend room 801 as the best in the hotel.

I was looking for old fashioned charm and rooms, if you like the same ask for a room in the Villa, rather than the modern wing. The villa has much of its antique decor intact. We also needed secure parking for a trailer. The staff realised immediately who we were from my booking enquiry and were more than helpful. Our room was at the top on a corner, so through draughts meant we didn't need air-con. Breakfast in the lovely gardens, you do need to ask for coffee from beans, but fruit and pastries were delicious. Lots of restaurants near by, hotel beach immaculate, beach bar reasonable. My husband went for a sail and loved it. The hotel also has a pool in the gardens (very pretty), again immaculate. Just wish we could have stayed longer.

For whatever reasons, this hotel appears to have been most unfairly judged by the majority of reviewers so time to set the record straight! I would completely concur with the comments made by PaullesNWKent, having been on a similar 7 day trip with Great Rail Journeys. Having worked within the hospitality industry for some 30 years I feel qualified to detect the difference between constructive criticism and downright whingeing! My accommodation was on the third floor within the older, traditional villa, was furnished commensurate with 4* standards albeit the bath itself was very much designed for the smaller figure! Tea and coffee making facilities are not usually found in Italian hotels so I was not surprised to find them absent, despite a hiccup on the GRJ factsheet. That said the hotel did agree to provide hot water etc. for those who had brought supplies with them - an example of the service level offered here. All staff took trouble to acknowledge guests and the front of house area was especially professionally managed. Laundry was changed daily and perhaps the only element that's prevented my giving this hotel an "excellent" rating was the food standard. Menus were dull and unimaginative with no thought given to their compilation aside from the cost factor! For a country that has so many gastronomic delights, a 4* property should come up with food more commensurate with its rating. Overall, a good choice of hotel in an excellent location worthy of far greater credit than has generally been given by the majority of reviewers on this site.

Room Tip: Select a room within the original villa for the most comfortable stay.

We spent seven nights as part of a Great Railway Journeys tour. Although previous reviews were disconcerting we found them to be unfounded in our case. It seems that the hotel might be arranged in three parts, where the original villa has (perhaps) the most expensive rooms on the upper floors, with low-rise extensions accommodating the bulk of the rooms and leaving the villa comparatively unaffected. Our room was a third floor corner room in what might have been the first extension of two. There are lifts from the first to upper floors. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a high ceiling and hardwood floor. The bathroom was adequate, although the bath was narrow causing shower space to be restricted, but we managed OK (the water pressure was very good). The standard of cleanliness and attention from the cleaning staff was exemplary - probably the best we have experienced anywhere - and others were of the same opinion. Air conditioning can be switched off by reception and the windows left open at night, with the shutters loosely closed to provide fresh air
Being in a tourist group the food (i.e. dinner) was basic but good and continental breakfast was common to everyone - particularly as the hotel used the garden to serve breakfast when the weather was appropriate. Staff in the restaurant were polite and helpful, yet reserved and even shy at times - but this is not a criticism. The bar staff were more 'up front' yet still very good and professional. The reception staff were swift and efficient and always welcoming. English was generally understood by all, which made things easier.
The hotel enjoys a pretty good setting within its own grounds, facing the sea and with its own well-equipped private beach. There is a decent swimming pool in the grounds, always clean even though the trees provide good shading in parts.
Our only minor disappointment was the absence of any facilities for preparing hot drinks within the room(s), but this is not the fault of the hotel as it never advertised this facility (although GRJ did in its documents). If you like 'proper' tea first thing in the morning take a travel kettle rather than ask for a jug of hot water from reception.
Would we ever return? Yes - definitely!

Room Tip: Try to book a corner room in the middle block (e.g. 319)
