Fountain was being power washed during my visit. Spent some time in this square and visited a wine shop and a bakery called forno and pasticeria but not on tripadvisor. I want to comment on the bakery ... it's a rip off! We were 4 tourists and charged double to triple prices compared to previous purchases. None of us got a receipt and the money we gave was put in a zippered bag under the cash register. When we asked for a receipt we were told it was not possible.

One of the most grandiose fountains in Spoleto could possibly be that of the large fountain in Piazza del Mercato, located in the historical centre of Spoleto. The current fountain was built in 1746-1748, designed by a Roman architect, it replaced the original fountain which was built in the facade of the old Romanesque church San Donato.

The fountain has an unusual mixture of decorations, in the centre there is a clock, above that there are the coat of arms of the Barberini family, the family of Pope Urban VIII, water trickles out of a central dish and to the side there are two masks where water flows out of their mouths into a large trough at the bottom. To the side of the clock there are windows with shutters, the fountain has to be seen to be believed.
