“I Like A Good Bed...”

There is no question that Spoleto is beautiful and there is no question that it has one of the prettiest opera houses - built with traditional boxes but with a huge modern stage. Spoleto shops and restaurants also give a traditionally warm Italian welcome to visitors but sadly not the Hotel dei Duchi, where the sole receptionist on duty when we arrived was surly, ill-tempered and a general fright.

Everything was too much trouble for her once she bothered to look up to see who was standing in front of her, daring to disturb her solitude.

I asked for a quiet room and was given the room next to the main staircase. With wooden and tile floors, possibly the noisiest in the hotel. I was moved with "this is the last possibility" - in a hotel which seemed near empty...

Was there WiFI? Yes. Did it work? No. I asked the receptionist if she might reset the system. 'Not possible.' (I later asked an Italian friend to ask her and it was done immediately.)

The rooms are adequately appointed and everything worked fine, but there was a layer of dirt in the bathroom which did not inspire confidence, in spite of elaborate paper wrappings on the loo.

And, oh boy, are the walls thin. In the early evening one heard a couple getting revved up for a night of passion; and the following morning they had a blazing row. Equally loud on both occasions...

The bar was not open when I returned from the theatre and I did not fancy the buffet breakfast.

Was there anything that I would recommend about the Hotel dei Duchi? Well, yes, the bed was firm and one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on. But would I ever stay again? Not while there is the grumpy receptionist who couldn't care less for her customers... This hotel proudly displayed four and a half Trip Advisor stars. I give it one only.

However wonderful a hotel is, surely it can ever really only be as good as the staff who work there?

Room Tip: As always, ask to be away from elevators and public staircases. But the walls of the rooms are very...

Easy to find, although the GPS had trouble, well located--- a solid 4 star hotel. Dei Duchi is just off a main square which has eating places, great gelato, and a view of the ruins of a Roman theater, where performances are held during the summer. A path from the hotel garden leads directly into the square. A half block from there is the entrance to the Archeoligical museum and the remains of the Roman theater. The Roman theater, lighted at night, can be seen from the hotel terrace (and from a few rooms, although partially blocked by trees).
All staff were agreeable and helpful. Rooms were very clean and furnished with modern wood design. We booked the Tastes of Umbria package, (50 Euro for two people) which included an
upgraded room (with a balcony), dinner in the hotel restaurant with a bottle of DOC wine and choice of anything on the menu. Also included: an appetizer platter of good salame, prosciutto,
bresaiola, and cheeses, with bread, and a glass of wine. We ordered some grilled vegetables,
enjoyed it at a garden table, and called it dinner! There is free parking just outside the entrance, but space is somewhat limited.
dinner!

We found the Hotel easily and were met by Patricia who was very friendly and helpful . I had contacted them about a change in my diet and they had gone to great lengths to accommodate me. Our room was 306 (I think) and we had the top balcony overlooking lovely views towards the hills. The room was large and comfortable and the bathroom was cleaned everyday. TV showed CNN but the English BBC news channel was frozen and did not work - but we were out a lot sight seeing so not too bad.
The breakfast had a range of foods but there were no hot dishes - we did not mind this. the Hotel is ideally placed for seeing everything in the town.
The town of Spoleto is stunning and there is a lot to see and do. Do go up the escalator to La Rocca (fortress type building). There is not a cafe here but there is a vending machine. The Ponte Del Torre is amazing and we took some wonderful photos.
Would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Our room had the top balcony and had excellent views away from the town centre

My "single" room was spacious, had a queen sized bed, platformed sitting area and was on the lower level of the hotel but still quite high up. Great views from the large window. A lift services all levels. The restaurant dining room was attractive and the buffet breakfast was of a reasonable standard. I didn't try the restaurant for other meals as there were many interesting, well-priced eating places a short walk away.

I have stay 2 more times at the wonderful 4 star, Hotel dei Duchi this year, once in March and then end of July through early August. They have made some upgrades to the dining and lobby areas. My group of 42 people had a wonderful 12 day stay, from the professionalism of the staff, reception area, waiters, to the maids. The owner must hand pick the right people to work there because all staff members are outstanding. Whatever minor issues we had or requests we made the hotel made sure that we were happy and comfortable. The hotel's location can not be better, just a block away from Piazza Liberta' in the charming historic center of town. As the organizer of my music program I was able to focus on what I was there for and could trust this amazing hotel to take care of any of my participants' needs or requests. My only criticism would be the internet connection was on the slow side and could use a faster connection, but, other than that, this continues to be my hotel of choice for Spoleto!

Room Tip: While rooms that face the beautiful garden also have a view of the Roman Theatre, rooms on the other...

A surprisingly well appointed hotel at the heart of Old Spoleto that backs up to Piazza della Liberta. We reserved a deluxe king room, but were pleasantly surprised to be given Rooms 201 & 202 which together made a 2 room Bedroom/Living Room suite. Nice flat screen TV's in both rooms. The Living Room had a small balcony that overlooked the dining terrace. Huge bathrooms--one with 2 sinks & a full size tub/shower. The other with a large sink, toilet, & bidet. Free WiFi and free parking are a nice plus. While our hotel from last year, the Gattapone, commanded a far superior view of the Aqueduct, I would prefer the Dei Duchi for its far nicer accommodations & food service.

Room Tip: Ask for the 201/202 combination

I stayed at the Hotel Dei Duchi for three days around Easter. There was parking in front of the hotel, which is perched on the edge of town, above some playing fields on one side, and the Roman theater on the other. The site is spectacular, and the first floor of the hotel is mostly glass, enhancing the views from the dining room. I find it difficult to walk long distances any more. The hotel is close to the duomo and the museum, and not at all difficult to get up to La Rocca, at the top of the town. Spoleto has a charming monumental cemetery, like a little piece of Rome, Genoa or Milan's with a fantastic Romanesque church overlooking it. My room was wonderful, the breakfasts were great. Town wasn't crowded while I was there. I'd like to go back again.
