“Unbeatable location, charming place if you like vintage”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

The hotel is slightly run-down, but in a nice, charming kind of way.
Very intimate ambience, could be the setting of a '60 / '70 movie.
My room was not spacious but then again it was also the cheapest, and the view on the Spoleto bridge was more than enough to offset this.
But the real reason to choose this hotel is its position, only hotel in Spoleto directly facing the famous bridge, and a stone's thow from the centre of town.

Room Tip: Room 46, best view

Who wouldn’t fall in love with this beautifully designed and appointed hotel stretched like a sleek cat along the cliff at the top of Spoleto, giving every room a spectacular view of the Roman Aqueduct and the gorge? I felt like a luminary sinking into the deep leather couches where artists, composers, writers and style-makers talked and drank late into the night when the hotel was first built. Well-maintained by the son of the original owners, the lounges, balconies and verandas welcome conversation or contemplation. Situated below La Rocca, it’s a short stroll to the Duomo and the old city, yet set apart from the bustle. Across the ancient bridge is a hillside of trails, one leading to Monteluco, the sacred woods of Saint Francis.
No elevator, WiFi limited to 2 lounges. But the ambiance outweighed the downside.

Room Tip: Ask for a first floor room if stairs are an obstacle. Walk the aqueduct/bridge at night--magical.

Expectations are important for this hotel. It has one of the most amazing views and locations you can imagine, even for Spoleto. We had a "superior room", with floor to ceiling windows looking over the valley and ancient bridge. Despite being in the center of town at the foot of the fortress it was totally quiet, like waking up in a country inn. The public rooms are beautiful and fit for a design magazine, the small and well kept garden lovely. It is clear that property has not had a full renovation for many decades and is a bit dated and shabby, but in a very relaxed and comfortable way. Our bathroom was brand new, while the room had a bit of peeling paint, an old fashioned bed, and an AC that was a bit creaky but serviceable. The breakfast was ok in content (nothing to shout about), but on an amazing valley view terrace. If you want shiny modern with lots of technology then forget Gattapone, however if you like places full of memory with fantastic views and some great spots to lounge with a good book, then this is the place.

Hotel with an interesting history. We were the only guests for two nights,it felt a little bit like royalty. It has seen better and more happier times ,but was still well worth it for the spectacular views, not to mention breakfast on the terrace. The nearby cafe was a most pleasant spot to enjoy a few drinks before strolling down to one of the many restaurants.

There is much to like about this former villa converted to a hotel in the mid 1960's. The room we had was spacious, spotlessly clean, had a very large bathroom, a comfortable bed and the most spectacular view. Granted there are some obvious signs of aging, the shower is hand held and there are steps that you need to negotiate but the positives outweigh. We spent two nights here and would do so again. Hotel Gattapone has a wonderful ambiance, very helpful staff and is centrally located in one of the most enchanting towns in Italy.

We stayed four nights. For a "four star hotel", there is no air-conditioning and no lift or elevator. I didn't mind this. However, it was 68 steps down (and up!) from our room at the top to the breakfast room and terrace at the bottom, so people with mobility problems should bear that in mind. Our "standard" room had an excellent view of the Ponte, and was perfectly comfortable. The bathroom is typical European bidet and "hand held shower" style - but it had a good view as well!
The Gattapone staff were all very helpful and friendly, and rates were very reasonable. There is a kind of '60s atmosphere tp the property, and some of the decor and wallpaper is just a bit tired, but for "prime position" in Spoleto, it's very hard to go past this place.

Have stayed here twice. Looks small from outside, but very sprawling inside. Many levels. Rooms are pleasant, but very old style. No showers--hand held sprayer in tub. Poor room & bathroom lighting. Breakfast OK. View of Aqueduct & Valley below is marvelous. Handy to nearby square with beautiful church. Rooms vary a lot--if they have more than one choice when you arrive, look at several & choose what suits you. Go for best view! Challenging to reach by car--fold in your rear view mirrors on the narrow streets.
