“Serene country setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2008

We had the pleasure of staying at the Albergo Ristorante La Macchia near Spoleto during our May 2008 visit to Italy. It is a charming, comfortable, clean and well-maintained little family-run hotel with a pleasant yard in a serene, country, “away-from-it-all” setting. We enjoyed strolling around the spacious grounds and sitting on our private balcony overlooking the garden below and the hillside beyond, covered in olive trees. We had a delightful, well furnished room with its own ensuite bathroom. The lovely owners and their staff provided warm and helpful hospitality, speaking fluent English. That evening we were treated to a wonderful meal in their own on-site restaurant.

  • Liked — Very quiet "get-away-from-it-all" setting
  • Disliked — Nothing.

I stayed here with friends in 2 rooms and we thought it was very pleasant and good value. Very nice size rooms with more than adequate features with the room at the rear having a fine view. The restaurant was closed (Monday?) but I also believe this to be excellent, however, we enjoyed excellent food and service in Canasta. We arrived by train which can be reached by regular various numbered buses which all (please check!) seemed to end up at the old town. Very pleasant.

  • Liked — Location. Size of rooms.
  • Disliked — No credit card.
  • Tips/Secrets — Take quiet room at rear. At Dec 06 there was major restoration work towrds front of hotel.

We have just returned from a week at La Macchia in Spoleto, Umbria.
The hotel was fantastic!! Our triple room was spacious and spotlessly clean, as was the rest of the hotel.
Breakfast was good with a choice of cereals, bread, cake, ham, cheeses, fruit juice, prunes and boiled eggs on request. We had not intended to eat there in the evenings but after the first night we were hooked and didn't eat anywhere else. Dinner consisted of anti pasta, pasta, main course and a dessert. All the food was traditional home cooked Italian fare and excellent value for only 18 euros a head. The pizzas from the wood burning oven were to die for.
The hotel is well situated for visiting all the lovely hill top towns such as Assisi, Spello, Perugia and Todi and only a 1hr 20min train journey from Rome. The Piana Grande in the Sibilini Mountains is also a must see area.
Roberta, the owner's daughter speaks excellent English and not only ran us into Spoleto for the train and picked us up again but also suggested many places for us to visit that we would not have found by ourselves.
The swimming pool was perfect after a days sightseeing or walking on the many footpaths in the surrounding hills.
All in all this hotel was a real find and we can't wait to return again for more of this excellent hospitality.

  • Liked — The excellent hosts
  • Disliked — Nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — Be sure to book your train tickets early as the trains to Rome and Florence get booked up

We were advised of La Macchia via the Tourist Office in Spoleto. It was pot luck and we weren't disappointed. The accommodation was very good, clean, bright, could really ask for more. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The food in the restuarant, although slightly limited in choice, was very good quality and reasonably priced. Dont order a pizza for one if you dont have a big appetite. The swimming pool was a delight - clean, cool and looked very new.
I would certainly go back.

If you dont have your own transport then you should be aware that it is not within walking distance of the town centre, but there is a bus stop at the main gate (yes gate - there is a long driveway from road to hotel).

Couldnt really do better for the price.

We chose Hotel La Macchia because we were travelling to Spoleto in Umbria in July, and knowing it would be hot, we thought we would need a pool. We had wonderful time in Spoleto in large part due to the warmth, helpfulness and kindness of the staff in this family run hotel especially Roberta.

It is located about 20 to 30 minutes walk from the centre of Spoleto (I'm sure one would be hard pressed to find a hotel in the centre of Spoleto that Has a pool). We walked in and out to Spoleto some of the time however the staff often drove us in (and offered to pick us up again!) This was very much appreciated as the taxi fare one way was about 15 Euro.

Breakfast was simple and nice (cereal, juice, yoghurt, fruit, cake, meats and cheese etc). The hotel also had a nice restaurant where we had a lovely meal one night.

The rooms were a good size and clean with good sized beds and the bathroom was acceptable. There was satellite TV but the only english channel we could get was CNN. The cost for a double room was 75 euro in total per night.

The pool which was situated in the midst of an olive grove was large, very clean and well maintained. This is where we spent most of our time!

If you require the ultra modern and pristine you may be slightly disappointed (but then you wouldn't have come to Umbria). If however you want a peaceful relaxing stay in the Umbrian countryside with staff that can't do enough to facilitate a lovely stay you I would definately recommend this hotel.

It is slightly difficult to find on the internet but if you put 'albergo la macchia' into a search engine, it should turn up.
