“Best place in Stromboli!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2013

Very nice Locanda. Friendly staff, especially Andrea, the owner is very helpful with everything you may need, as is "Nonna" who, as a private cook, prepared our 8 month old a fantastic, healthy Italian baby dinner! The restaurant is very good as well, we had a lovely meal here with nice wine.
Would definitely book this place again for every next visit to this fantastic little island!

On west side, the green slope of the Volcano which sneezes every ten minutes; on east side a garden overhanging the Eolian sea and the Strombolicchio rock which lighthouse marks every night. In between, stuck to the main narrow street of S.Vincenzo stands this colored house hold by a man of taste. Simplicity, charm and refinement are the qualities of this place and we felt these characters in the room furnitures, as well as for the morning breakfast on the terrace or when we had a chat with our host. The Church is next door if you search for God protection in case Stromboli gets angry with you. The team of guides (Magmatrek) is also settled close by Barbablu if you are willing to kiss the monster's red lips at night. Standing on the balcony, with the morning sun cooking up your head straight away and the volcano shouting at you, you can have a peep at the intense village activity out of the most touristic part of the village. There you intimately measure earth's life.

Room Tip: our room was south east side above the street but we were not so much disturb by the traffic because...

We had two wonderful nights on Stromboli. Island life is always a bit different, but Stromboli has a unique feel living in the shadows of an active volcano literally. Barbablu is a reasonable walk from the wharf up through the village, past the church and just down the hill a bit further. Charming roman/mediterranean/rustic feel to the place. The room had character and a magnificent view of Strombolichio (an old volcanic plug) popping out of the water.

Location worked out to be quite central, but that also meant being on the main thoroughfare. Cars are not common but there is a lot of foot traffic, particularly in the evening as climbers come down from the trek to see the volcano at dusk. They arrive back around 11pm and chatter excitedly about their experience. Add to this the restaraunt that becomes a bit of a late night party on the ground floor and it can be a bit noisy.

Breakfast is included and reflects the interesting style of the restaraunt. Fresh quality ingredients, beautifully cooked. No set menu, just what is in season and pleases the chef.

Room Tip: You will have to decide if the views over the water are worth being on top of the restaraunt.

..and the kitchen staff, and the wait staff, and the cleaning staff. If you want to follow lesser reviews you will be missing out on the other bit of magic that the Island has besides the Volcano. Do dine here, enjoy their tasting menu and ask why it is so special. Travelling the world eating this mama has it nailed.
Thank you all for a wonderful time, your hospitality makes me proud to be in this industry.

Andrea, who runs the Locanda, showed us superb hospitality from the moment we arrived to when we departed. In short, we had a wonderful stay at this hotel and I would highly recommend it.

We arrived on Stromboli on the overnight ferry from Naples, and Andrea greeted us at 7.30am to offer us breakfast. As we had travelled to Stromboli outside of peak season and our room was available, we were also allowed to check in early and check out late when we came to depart, which was very helpful.

The room itself was wonderful. Don't expect lots of creature comforts, as it did have a degree of austerity. But do expect a good shower room (no baths - water availability isn't great on the island), very stylish decor (wooden screens, silk throws on the beds), and access to the roof terrace that runs around the building, with sun loungers and fantastic views over the sea and up the volcano.

As for the food, this is certainly the place on Stromboli to stay. The breakfast was simple, but the food was delicious and the attention to detail meticulous. I enjoyed the best scrambled eggs I have ever had, and the home made marmalades (orange, and spiced bitter apple) were to die for. The dinner (€50 per head extra) was a wonderful tasting menu of many fish and pasta courses, and a delicious desert. We had the best tuna we have ever eaten (perfectly fresh and excellently prepared) along with many other delicious dishes. The menu, which changes every day, is certainly worth trying, and we decided it was so good we ate in the Locanda every evening we stayed. Andrea again showed incredible hospitality by preparing us a late supper on the day we trekked up the volcano (we only arrived back at the Locanda at about 10.30pm), and also an early dinner on the day Monday we were departing, even though the restaurant was only open on weekends.

I spent six days at the hotel and loved every minute. Stromboli in the off-season is great: Nice weather and beautiful scenery. But one of the reasons I had such a great time is La Locanda del Barbablu. There are only about six rooms, each decorated with original colors (a green ceiling in my room) and a few religious icons. The owner is friendly and speaks fluent English, and offered me helpful advice every day on what to see. Stromboli is not large, but even so, this is centrally located. My room had a view of the volcano, and you hear it rumbling.
Attached to the hotel is a restaurant that was amazing. There is only a tasting menu, of 7-8 dishes, most made with fish. The chef changes the menu each day, depending on what's fresh, and how she feels. The whole experience was magical. I plan to return as soon as possible.

A charming small guesthouse with only 5 or 6 rooms, all finely decorated. One of the best room is definitively the 101 (because of the size of the room, the view and the terrace), but you shouldn’t be afraid of the noise, since a small (trendy) bar/restaurant is underneath. The restaurant is a good place for a diner, but some guests stay late at night, and if you are looking for a peaceful retreat on Stromboli Island (which is a wise quest) look for another place (especially for 180 euros per night). Fortunately, we were so tired after our hike on the volcano that no noise could awake us from our sleep!
