We are not sure where to start in reviewing this hotel- we had very mixed experiences. We were met at the harbour by a driver and "ape" taxi, who drove us to the hotel. Our welcome was pleasant and we were showed to our room which was clean and comfortable, but also had a little patio outside from which we could see the private volcanic beach and Stromboliccio. The beach itself was excellent and quiet at the time we were there. It was around a 15 minute walk to the "centre" of the village, from where the trekking trips leave. The terrace was a beautiful setting for a good breakfast. The rest of our experiences in the hotel were a little bizarre- we felt like we were the only occupants by day, however at night it turned out that a school party of around 30 was dining in the restaurant- however when we asked for a table, we were firstly met with a quizzical look, before being sat and served the fixed menu which the kids were eating. We felt a bit out of place as we ate next to the kids.
On the 2nd night, we wanted to pay and get our passports back, since we were leaving on the 7am hydrofoil and were not sure if reception would be open (it seemed to be shut most of the time) - this turned into a bit of a nightmare- no-one was at reception, the dining area was also shut on this night, and there was no staff to be seen. We phoned the hotel from our mobile phone, but the person on the other end could speak no English and after about 10 minutes of broken Italian explanations, he provided us with another number. The same problem occurred- we could not even ascertain whether the number was correct and that we were actually speaking to hotel staff. Eventually we had to give up, and I had to try again to find staff - at which point I met the lady I spoke to on the phone, who assured me that reception would be open. A lot of this is down to my ignorance of not being able to speak the local language, however, simple information such as this really should have been made available to us (especially at a hotel), which would have made life a lot easier-as would the dining experience. Our final shock was when presented with the bill- it was an astonishingly expensive cost, (with our fixed 'school dinner' with no drinks costing more than any meal on our trip). We were also shocked to see that we were also charged heavily for the 2 taxi trips to/from the harbour, which we were unaware of. This bill meant that we paid £180 for 2 nights, off-peak- this was more than what we had quoted by email, but as we were in a hurry with no English speakers, we were left with no choice but to pay up.
To sum up, this hotel was very peaceful, had good rooms, and great setting, however we were left with a bad taste in our mouths due to staffing shortages and lack of clear information, and overcharging.
