B&B Il Marchese del Grillo
Ranked #1 of 31 Sulmona B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 June 2014

We arrived late at night in Sulmona only to realised that we had booked the wrong check in date! Despite that, Marta, the owner, received us with a warm welcome. The room decor we stayed in is very chic which goes very well with its rustic architecture. It has abig wooden bed and gorgeous linens. The best thing about this b&b is the breakfast! They serves home made cold meat, cakes and cheese! The roof top view is very beautiful.

The one star off is only because the driving is terrible. I agree with everyone that Marta and her B&B are fabulous. I won't repeat all the glowing reviews others have posted, but rest assured I agree with every word. However, if you are driving here you should know that it is not easy to find. The directions Marta sent us by e-mail sounded straightforward, but:
1. the road she gave directions from (Corso Ovidio) starts with a different name (Roosevelt), so it is not at all clear when you reach the Ovidio (so you can look for the "second right").
2. Since it's hard to know where to start counting for the "second right," you would think just looking for the name of the street would be enough; but no. The only street sign posted at that corner is facing the other way (so invisible as you drive down the road).
2. Even had we known where Corso Ovidio started, it turned out we couldnt drive onto it because it was closed(with a forced turn sign) at the hours we arrived, pedestrians only (Marta later explained that we could ignore those signs since we were coming to her, but how were we to know that as we entered Sulmona? - it wasn't mentioned in the e-mail).
3. many narrow one-way roads, many signs telling us we couldn't enter (one of which we missed, but the pedestrians tapped our car and told us we had to turn around), and we were very lost, even in Tiny Sulmona.

After a very frustrating half hour trying to drive to the place, we parked, my husband stayed with the car, and I walked to the B&B. Marta kindly walked back with me to the car and navigated us to the B&B, where we spent a fabulous two nights.

When we left, it seemed we had good directions, and looked forward to an easy exit. Unfortunately, there was construction going on at the end of the road, no diversion signs, cars starting to pile up behind us on the narrow, one-way road joined only to other narrow one-way roads… Everyone was frustrated, some were mad (all those yelling drivers kind of ruined the nice small-town atmosphere, but we couldn't blame them really; one of the cars was too big to turn around and had to back up the whole way, trying not to hit cars parked on the edge). It literally took us half an hour to work our way the 1/4 mile out to a main road, making our hired car return almost late.

Of course, that last bit isn't Marta's fault at all, I just want to warn you drivers that you should leave extra time and patience to get to and from the place, definitely ignore googlemaps (as Marta advised), and, I guess, ignore the forced turn sign where Roosevelt turns to Ovidio street!

This B&B is highly rated and there is a reason, it is exceptional. The vaulted ceilings in our bedroom, the stonewalls with the shower carved in, the antique furnishings, the wonderful bed linens. The attention to detail in all aspects of the place makes it special. Breakfast is a trip through old family recipes, local produce and traditional dishes of the area. An example is the homemade cheese served with a wine mush condiment. So good. Marta takes on the role as your personnel tourist guide of the area and restaurant guide as well. The view from the rooftop garden makes the climb worth while even if you have a cane. This B&B will not disappoint.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor off the courtyard. Perfect location

Set in the historic centre of this beautiful town, Marta's B&B offers elegant comfort, wonderful breakfasts and warm and willing assistance. Being there at Easter was pure magic! Stairs may be a challenge. Highly recommended.

We can't recommend this b&b more highly. Marta was an excellent hostess. She was generous and helpful, giving us daily advice on places to visit and things to do. A great deal of thought and attention to detail had gone into the planning and development of this relatively new establishment which is located in a house that dates back to the 13th century. Breakfasts were interesting and generous with a focus on local food, much of which had been prepared by Marta's family members. The menu varied from day to day but included cold meats, cheeses and delicious cakes from Marta's family, as well as fruit, yoghurt and so on. We visited the local market (which is not to be missed and takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays) and bought food which we ate for lunch on the roof of the b&b while enjoying spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains that surrounded Sulmona
