“Genuine hospitality in Puglia”
Reviewed 26 October 2009

After reading the reviews before we left for our holiday, we were more than a little concerned about what we were going to find. After 10 days at the hotel, we wondered if previous reviewers had stayed at the same place. Yes, we went at the end of the season and, yes, the bathrooms needed a bit of sprucing up, but the location was beautiful, the facilities good, everything was clean and, above all, the staff were both attentive and friendly. Having to choose our dinner menu at breakfast time was no big deal and the choices were ample. The addition of amuses-bouche and salad everyday, not to mention the 'extras' offered by Marcello the maitre d', meant that we had almost a five course meal every evening. As suggested by a previous reviewer, even when there wasn't something on the menu you liked, you only had to ask for alternatives. Puglia remains unspoilt and not too touristy so if you want a package that is simply England with sun, this might not suit you. if you want genuine Italian hospitality and a base from which to explore the area when you're not enjoying the pool or beach, then try this hotel.

i travelled with my spouse around puglia for a week i stayed in several hotels and really found a lot of charme in the=is region, the white sandy beach of this hotel was really beautiful, me and my spuse were walking to the nearby viallge everyday even though it was really hot for us but we kept going into the water all the time.
we really enjoyed the elegant service at the restaurant we had a great choice of fish and vegeables everyday and they make a great linguini with vongole..., the staff at reception and in the restaurant were really friendly and professional, we also really enjoyed their beach restaurant right on the sand were the witer mino is the king and really charming,
we really enjoyed our vacation and will come back soon

For the past 15 years of coming to Italy I had believed it was impossible to eat badly there until my stay at this hotel. Considering it claims to be a 4 star hotel the breakfast is inadequate and very mean. As for lunch, what was advertised as fresh tuna salad came straight out of the tin; ravioli stuffed with spinach and ricotta absolutely inedible, with tomato sauce so tart and the filling resembling manure, for a desert unappetising and far from fresh fruit salad. That all for eye watering Euro 27.50, without even drinks. Rooms are small with my desk and chair obstructing access to the balcony as there is no space between those and the bed. The bed is also so close to the balcony door you cannot fully open it. Walls are paper thin so you literally can hear the couple next door whispering.

All the top floor rooms (unlike the rest) have a balcony with nice views over the sea, well, and some buildings and greenery nearby. Do not expect much privacy though nor sun as that is the whole day on the other side of the building. The swimming pool area is really nice so you can stay sunbathing all day there or on the beach indeed. The beach is nice, sandy and the sea quite shallow, you can take long walks either side. Torre Canne is about 15 mins walk, it is more of an ugly village where most of the apartments are holiday rents so there are only a few tiny food shops, tourist junk shops and dreary fruit machine arcades. Unless you have a car you are stuck with the pool and the beach. There is a decent fish restaurant next door and some others which, however, promptly close at the end of the summer season (early September) as there is simply no business beyond that time.

If the food at the hotel was nice it would make a nice beach holiday. I suppose they do not have to try hard as they have an easy business in selling tour operator's packages and there are not any other hotels nearby apart from hotel Serene which caters mainly for Italian Spa guests and then 3 star hotel Eden, whose staff is actually very friendly and prompt in their replies unlike this one which is mainly used to dealing with tour operators and not individual clients. Clientele mainly retired couples, friends, also, rather oddly some families with very small babies. This hotel sufferes from a lack of competition. Even the staff is old and tired, a hotel like this does make you want just give up! If you want to experience typical Italian warm hospitality, great food and beautiful location this is not it. Puglia has much more to offer than this.

The staff are helpful, the hotel is very clean but tired and in need of modernisation. The pool has a liner and needs replacing with a modern day pool.
We hired a car which was a great idea as we could see lots of other areas. It is a long walk into torre canne.
Nice holiday but not worth what we paid for it. Not a 4 star hotel!!!

Oh dear a Set menu, you choose your dinner at breakfast - not our type of holiday at all! and the set menu food is poor - however dual standards applied as if one asked for alternative local food this was provided willingly. DONT accept set menu ask for an alternative - we ate like kings - fish, parma ham, fresh fruit, mussels. Top Tip: The restaurant right next door is really fab, cheap great service, sea food and local wine.
Hotel facilities, beautiful pool bar not used evenings , awful hotel outside bar with dreadful entertainment and plastic seating., TV in room only a portable.
We made the most of our holiday and did enjoy it - although for little money and effort this hotel could be a true four star. Some staff are outstanding and cleanliness is high. Beach and beach staff superb. A great 'do nothing' place to visit.

My husband and I decided to take a last minute holiday in early June to the Apulia region (somewhere I had always wanted to go). Due to the lack of tourism in the area, the number of hotels/places to stay are limited and this one seemed like a good 'all round' hotel.

Whilst the view from our room was great (we upgraded to a room with a balcony - NB do not assume you have a balcony if your room is classed as 'seaview') and it was kept very very clean, the walls were paper thin and we were treated to the sounds of fellow residents clearing their throats, heated discussions (!) and children running around/screaming early in the morning and late at night.

The food was also a disappointment.. during our stay we experienced overcooked pasta, packet mix soup and frozen fish - such a shame when the area is largely agricultural/ the hotel is situated in a fishing village. The options aren't great in terms of local eateries so, despite the comments above, you are still better off eating at the hotel.

Although the entertainment wasn't great, the entertainment staff are lovely and we had a good evening chatting with them and being shown magic tricks.

All in all, for the money we paid, this hotel was good value but I can not hand on heart recommend it to others.

I have just returned from a one week stay at this hotel with my husband and, of my 13 holidays in different parts of Italy over the years, this has been the most disappointing. This area of Italy is not very popular with UK travel companies and this was one of the only hotels on the coast. Being of a similar size and with what appeared to be similar amenities to other Italian hotels we had stayed in, we decided to book via Citalia.

Having read previous reviews on Tripadvisor, we were aware that the town of Torre Canne was very basic and we were prepared for this. We also pre-booked expensive private transfers to the hotel from Bari Airport as, unlike most package holidays, there was no coach transfer included and we are not prepared to hire a car due to our previous experience of poor road signs and Italian drivers! What we were not prepared for was the general poor standard of the room and the number of children that were there, with the summer holidays seeming to start a week earlier than normal.

I will say that the room was very clean but there was only one plug socket accessable and it was too far away from the mirror to be of any use when using my own hairdryer. There was no safe in the room and, although a safety deposit box was available at reception, this would not have been practical for storage of other valuables, such as mobile phones, ipods and watches which were used on a regular basis. Storage was minimal and installing bedside cabinets with drawers would have been more practical than the small tables provided.

The bathroom only had a shower, which is not a problem for us, but the sink was cracked, the toilet flush did not work when we first got there and had to wait until the following morning for repair and the taps and fixtures were a bright yellow colour and of an industrial nature which would have been better suited to a factory. The towels were also of shabby quality - the bathsheet of the thin, waffle variety and the hand towels similar to bedsheets and were often threadbare or with holes - not what you would expect from what is allegedly a four-star hotel.

The walls are also paper-thin and we were unfortunately next door to an Italian couple with a very loud, grizzly pre-school age child. My husband is a light sleeper and had to wait until they were settled in for the night, which was often quite late, before he event attempted to go to sleep as he knew he would be disturbed.

Many of the previous reviewers were not impressed by the food in the hotel restaurant but I found it to be adequate. It is quite common in Italian hotels without buffets for meal selections to be made at breakfast and so this was acceptable. However, we found the evening meal service to be very rapid with the main course being put in front of you as your starter plate was taken away. The breakfast buffet was limited compared to others I had experienced but, other than the sickly-sweet syrup from the dispensing machine which was supposed to be orange juice (I found undrinkable) it was OK.

At the side of the main pool was a small area shaded by trees and this was ideal for me as, being fair-skinned, I can't take too much sun. The beach was also well maintained and with soft sand and warm, clear, shallow water which was understandably busy. There was also a snack bar for lunch but this mainly provided salads which I don't like, toasted sandwiches which were dry enough to give chronic indigestion and omelettes which were extortionately priced - 10 euros for the omelette and a small portion of potatoes of the day!! The prices of drinks in the bar were reasonable compared to the more popular destinations in Italy with soft drinks only 2 euros and a litre of water for 2.5 euros.

The main torture came in the evenings - the 'entertainment' started at 9pm and this consisted of at least half an hour of the most annoying children's songs, all in Italian, being blasted out throughout the ground floor of the hotel with the Children's club activities taking place just outside the bar area. The same CD was played every night, with a further couple of songs being played at 10pm, and there was no where to get away from it. In my opinion, this is far too late for children's activities to be going on and it should not have dominated the whole of the common areas - its not even as if there were any local bars to escape to!! What the hotel failed to realise is that not all of their guests had children and therefore did not want to be subject to children's entertainment every evening.

On a positive note, we found the Reception staff to be very friendly and helpful. They did book the 'excursions' we wanted to go on but, unlike normal excursions with a large group and a guide, this was basically a taxi dropping you off and picking you up again at the attraction/town. We were unable to find a good guide book of the Puglia region and therefore found ourselves wandering aimlessly around not really knowing what we were looking at or if we had missed the main attractions. These were also not cheap, for example:

- Full day in Lecce, Otranto & Santa Maria di Leuca 60 euros per person
- Half day in Alberobello & Caves of Castellana 33 euros per person
- Half day in Cisternino & Ostuni 25 euros per person
- Half day in Lecce 43 euros per person

I have yet to go on a holiday which is perfect but, with this one, there were too many imperfections for what was a reasonably expensive holiday (£900 each for one week half-board). Had it been sold to us as a three star hotel for £500- £600 my expectations would have been lower and my disappointment reduced. At least it didn't rain!!!!
